Abstract

The aim of this research is to prepare a biomaterial to be used in health care. A series of hydrogels based on polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)/κ-Carrageenan (KC) has been prepared by radiation technique. PVP (5-15%) were mixed with ΚC (2%) and irradiated by gamma rays at the doses from 25 kGy to 35 kGy (dose rate 7 kGy/h) at room temperature. The chemical change of hydrogels was characterized using Fourier Transform infra Red (FTIR). Gel fraction, water absorption and water evaporation were determined gravimetrically. Tensile strength and elongation at break was measured using Instron meter. It was found that with the increase irradiation dose and PVP concentration, the gel fraction and tensile strength of hydrogels increase. In contrast the elongation at break and water absorption of hydrogels decrease. The hydrogel of PVP/KC hydrogel produced by gamma radiation can be considered for wound dressings.

Abstract

This study examines the antioxidant activity of crude phlorotannins from the brown algae Sargassum hystrix v. buxifolium (Chauvin) J. Agardh, through the inhibition of a lipid peroxidation reaction that is induced by the UV radiation. The antioxidant activity during the UV exposure was investigated using the laser-based photoacoustic method for the detection of the ethylene as indicator for lipid peroxidation. This involves an experiment that isolated crude phlorotannins from the ethyl acetate fraction of the Sargassum hystrix methanol extract, hereafter referred to as PFSH. It results in the antioxidant activity as a potent lipid peroxidation inhibitor. Statistically, such antioxidant activity is not significantly different than the commercial antioxidant, which is vitamin C (p > 0.05). The amount of the total phlorotannins, using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, was measured to be approximately 0.13% w/w. Abstract

In this study, transesterification of coconut oil with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) for preparing biodiesel has been studied using TiO2/SiO2 as heterogeneous catalyst, with the main purpose to investigate the effect of molar ratio of DMC to oil. The product was analyzed by GC-MS to identify the fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) composting the biodiesel. The significant role of the DMC to oil ratio was observed in this study, in which the oil conversion was found to increase with increasing molar ratio of DMC : Oil, with the highest percent of conversion of 88.44%. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of methyl esters in accordance with the composition of coconut oil commonly reported. Formation of FAMEs was verified by 1H-NMR spectroscopic analysis, which also suggested that some of the fatty acids remain unconverted into biodiesel. The biodiesel produced was found to have kinematic viscosity of 2.4 mm2/S at 40 °C, flash point of 103 °C, and cetane number of 54.

Abstract

Catalysts have played an important role in many industries because they allow the reaction occurs faster. The aim of this work were to synthesize and characterize a Cu(II)-acetonitrile complex immobilized on modified silica and to investigate its catalytic activity at optimal condition (catalyst concentration, stirring rate, and the duration of reaction) in transesterification of frying oil. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Nano Laser-Particle Size Analyzer (NL-PSA) were used to characterized the catalyst obtained, metal loading and leaching of the copper content was measured by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and the formation of product from transesterification reaction was analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). FTIR spectra reveal a successful synthesis of modified silica and the immobilized Cu(II)-acetonitrile complex on it. NL-PSA Analysis showed that the catalyst possesed smaller particle size than the parent silica. Analysis with AAS confirms the stable catalysts formed because metal loading and leaching value were of 6.19 and 0.16%, respectively. The optimum conditions were found to be 0.80% catalyst concentration, 300 rpm stirring rate and 10 h duration of reaction.
