Abstract

One of the weaknesses of UT as the holder of distance education is the difficulty in distributing the printed learning materials (modules) to the students spread all over the country. Recently, UT has developed Online based module distribution which is commonly known as UT E-bookstore (TBO-UT). This research is to describe the effectivity of using TBO-UT, and done by qualitative approach and quantitative approach. The result of this research shows that (1) the students participation in using TBO-UT is still low, which is only 10,36% from all students of UBJJ-UT Surabaya. It implies that (a) the TBO is still new that not all students know about it (b) less socialization of using TBO-UT (c) the low skill of students in accessing the internet. This research also shows that Online based module distribution is not effective yet to fulfill the students needs. It is caused by some factors (a) the module distribution is not on time yet (b) the students find difficulty in paying the modules for no Bank Mandiri in their area (c) the bad connection in accessing the UT website (d) the lack of modules needed by students. The presence of TBO UT really helps full time worked students but becomes a problem for those who get difficulty in accessing the internet.

Abstract

A survey study on the graduates apprenticeship was conducted by the tracer study team of The Faculty of Teachers Training and Educational Sciencies, Universitas Terbuka in 2008. The graduates consisted of them of 10 programs, one of which was the Bahasa Indonesia program. This study was aimed to collect data on graduates profile which was gender, age, current profession, achievement enchanced skills and qualification especially in language and ICT skills. The study also collected data on the graduates perception about the quality of academic services during their study. A series of interview were conducted and some questionnairs were distributed to the respondents, including the graduates and their supervisor. The results of data analysis revealed the respondents consist of 34 males and 48 females, and their ages range from 31 to 60 years old. The current profession consisted of 67 teachers, the rest of them were lecturers, head masters, vice headmasters, administrators, and school supervisors. Their incomes varied from 1 to 5 million rupiahs. Thirty of 82 respondents informed that they received awards, such as Satya Lencana Karya Satya. All of the respondents indicated that their communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia were very well enchanced. In addition, sixty two of 82 respondents reported that they had average level in English competencies and ICT skills. The data analysis revealed that all the respondents indicated high level of satisfaction toward the academic services of the quality of learning assessment however they were not satisfaction toward tutorials of any form. These study results can be able to use as the valuable input for program and services improvement, especially for academic services affairs.

Abstract

This article aims to report students perception on face to face tutorials at Universitas Terbuka. Three latent variables which are tutors performance, tutorial result and tutorial cost were investigated. The respondents were 100 students from Jakarta and 100 students from Bandung where each location consisted of 50 students from Faculty of Education and 50 students from Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Social Sciences. Data was analyzed by using Factor Analysis, Multivariate Analysis of Variance, Univariate Analysis of Variance, and t-test.The results were: (1) The majority of students gave positif respon to all of the statements, (2) 10 out of 48 staments on students perception have to be considered by UPBJJ-UT and UT management because 10%-13% of respondents gave low scores, (3) Student from Faculty of Economics and Sicial Science at UPBJJ-UT Bandung had higher scores in tutorial result than their colleagues from Faculty of Education (4) Student from Faculty of Education at UPBJJ-UT Jakarta felt that tutorial cost was more expensive than their colleagues from other faculties, (5) There was no significant difference between students from UPBJJ-UT Jakarta and Bandung based on their perceptions on tutors performance, tutorial result, and tutorial cost.

Abstract

Students at Universitas Terbuka especially from Primary Schools Teachers Education program are clustered into study groups. These study groups exist in all UT regional centers. Several study groups are coordinated by a coordinator. The coordinators have important role in managing the students learning activities as well as promoting Universitas Tebuka. Charcteristics of coordinators, factors related to coordinators roles, and their involvement in promoting UT are discussed in this article.

Abstract

Online examination started in UPBJJ-UT Surabaya since 2005.2 named UBK (Ujian Berbasis Komputer/Computer Based Examination) until 2009.2. On 2010.1, UBK was implemented more perfectly, and the name has changed to beOnline Examination System ( Sistem Ujian Online/ SUO).However, the number of students who participated in both UBK and SUO is always less than 20 people or less than 2% of total of students of Non-Basic Education Study Program at UPBJJ-UT Surabaya. This article explains about the evaluation of the implementation of online examination, specifically on Non-Basic Education Study Program at UPBJJ-UT Surabaya. One hundred twenty five students and five administrator acted as the informant of the evaluation, and survey, in-depth interview, and direct observation were used to collect data and information. Research result showed that majority of students still do not know about online examination system and socialization of online examination system by institution was the biggest factor that affect this condition.

Abstract

Distance learning university has unique characteristics. One of them is the amount of student which is usually larger than the conventional university. In order to serve its students better, both academic and administrative, the distance learning university usually applies a uniform approach in designing students learning activities. The approach covers learning process and examination components. The reason of using this approach is mainly based on managerial factors. The uniform approach which is associated with behavioral learning theory limit the creativity of distance students to construct their knowledge. It is necessary for the distance learning students to have a broad spectrum of knowledge used in daily professional activities. The purpose of the present paper is to elaborate the possibilities of using other approaches that will be able to enhance student knowledge. Instead of using uniform or behavioral approach, there are possibilities to apply a constructivism theory in printed learning material to be used distance learning system.
