Journal of Architectural Research and Design Studies (JARS) is a discursive venue for research groups, lectures and tutors and students emphasizing architectural education in Indonesian context. It connects education realm with building industries and architectural practices. This journal is internationally peer reviewed / refereed. JARS contains variety of architectural topics on architectural history and theory and criticism, structure and building science as well as design practices. The Journal encourages discursive architecture on marginalized community, gender, race or ethnicity, as well as multicultural and participatory approach.

Abstract

First-time home buyers have many considerations to choose their house after leaving the parental house. One of the determinant roles is culture. Culture influences activities, the meaning of home perspectives, and parental support system. Indonesia has a strong family culture, one of which is the Batak tribe. As one of the largest populations in Jakarta, this study focuses on the next-generation Batak process of selecting the first house. This study using case studies and qualitative research with in-depth interviews. We found that culture influenced the moving stage and parental support role. The parents play two essential parts: they are mindset formers as well as providers of financial support. Although the housing preferences tend to be similar to the firsttime homebuyers in urban areas, culture influences the spatial arrangement process. The finding can contribute to how parental support affects the next generation of migrants while adapts to the housing market. Keywords: Batak family; culture; housing preferences; parental support

Abstract

This article discusses design of possible connection system by moving the vertical and horizontal construction’ elements. The vertical and horizontal elements are applied to ensure comfortable indoor lighting comfort. This idea is part of sustainable low-technology strategy. The developed mobile facade technology aims to transmit sunlight into the space unimpeded, as well as to improve the building’ performance. This research is preliminary part of the design development in producing flexible space using movable wall and also the need to control sunlight by using dynamic facades. The research method uses application of modeling to create the desired shapes and prototypes for movement design. Applying multiple movable joints and various vertical or horizontal elements will improve lighting conditions. In addition, the application of a movable wall system into design can increase the indoor comfort without reducing the room function. Keywords: dynamic facades; indoor comfort; lighting improvement, moveable walls; space flexibility

Abstract

Natural ventilation is applied to most educational buildings in Indonesia. Natural ventilation is one of the strategies to achieve the physical comfort of residents and an effort to save energy. During a pandemic, natural ventilation requires because it is expected to make the air circulation in the room. The presence of good air circulation will make the spread of the virus can be avoided. One indicator of the success of space for good and healthy air circulation is the achievement of Air Change per Hours (ACH) values according to standards. The study aims to find out and identify the performance of natural ventilation as an element that determines indoor air circulation against the spread of the covid 19 viruses, comfortable air velocity in a room and user capacity. The study used simulation methods to determine the value of ACH and air velocity. The research main goal was to look at the possibility of reopening schools as safely and quickly as possible. The results showed that the school buildings studied could be used for Pandemic and postpandemic times, indicated by ACH grades > 8 and air velocity in room 0.2-0.8 m/s. The building has an opening area of approximately 30% with an opening type that is able 45% wind flow. With the simulation obtained, to achieve health and comfort standards with 50% users, with certain air velocity conditions, the minimum opening area is 20% with 45% aperture type and 90% type. Keywords: ACH; natural ventilation; performance; window types

Abstract

Virtual Public Space in the sketch community has created by physical distancing during the covid-19 pandemic. The development of the spread of Covid-19, which is experiencing an increase, has changed the physical public space to turn into a virtual public space. Therefore the public space becomes part of the social space for a community, one of which is the sketch community. The sketch community in urban sketchers began to switch to using virtual public space during a pandemic. This study aims to find a pattern from virtual public space in a sketching community that architecture students follow. The method used is the descriptive qualitative method by taking four case studies from communities in Indonesia. According to students, the placemaking pattern of virtual public space from these four communities is necessary and valuable for independent sketching learning. Keywords: community; placemaking; sketching; virtual public space

Abstract

Architecture is a part of spatial planning that is very closely related to the culture that surrounds the community. One of the most interesting things is digging up information about the architecture of the Yogyakarta Palace. There are so many parts of the architectural layout of the palace that are very interesting to be thoroughly explained. One of the interesting things is Pawon. The research method used is a combination of measurements or direct observations in the field with software simulations. The results of this study are able to conclude that the thermal comfort in the Pawon Gebulen Kraton Yogyakarta building has not been fulfilled. The determining factors of thermal comfort discovered in this research are the relationship with the temperature and heat due to the heat transfer of natural lighting into the building. Even though it has not been fulfilled, the Abdi Dalem still voluntarily work in that place. This is because the social spirit of the community is quite high and the spirit of serving the Sultan is quite strong. Keywords: kitchen; kraton; light; pawon; temperature; thermal
