Abstract

sual literacy is the skill to interpret and give meaning to information in the form of images or visuals. Visual literacy is included in the list of 21st-century skills. The observation results indicate that most of the students have not mastered visual literacy well. One of the efforts that can be made to improve visual literacy is the provision of appropriate and right teaching materials The research is an R&D (Research and Development) using a 4-D model, which is modified to 3-D (define, design, develop). The instruments used were content analysis sheets and validation questionnaires. The results of the research imply that there are three characteristics of the validity of the developed module. First, visual literacy produces students’ critical thinking and communication skills by building their own meaning or conclusions regarding the given image object. Second, visual literacy produces students' creative thinking by recreating it in the form of images or other visual objects from the provided visual information. Third, visual literacy produces students' critical thinking skills by connecting visual objects or images that are distributed to them. The module is considered to be very valid (feasible) to use with a percentage of 94.23%.

Abstract

This paper discusses the effectiveness of Experiential Learning on the Jelajah Alam Sekitar approach (JAS) on the ninth-grade students’ cognitive learning outcomes and activeness at SMP Negeri 6 Semarang on the function of soil for life and its component learning material. The research uses the Static Group Comparison method by involving two classes. The control class (9H) uses the lecture method and the experimental class (9G) uses the JAS approach based on Experiential Learning. The cognitive learning outcome data were obtained from multiple choice objective tests (summative assessment), while students’ activeness data were obtained from observation sheets. Data were analyzed by using an independent T-test. The results indicate that the JAS approach was effective in improving students’ cognitive learning outcomes and activeness. It is evidenced by a significant difference between the average score of cognitive learning outcomes in the control class at 89 and in the experimental class at 96.3 with a p-value of 0.043. In addition, there was a difference between the average score of students’ activeness in the control class at 12.3 and in the experimental class at 13 with a p-value of 0.116. Yet, the differences were not significant. Based on the results of the research, it is recommended that teachers can use the JAS approach as one of the alternative learning methods that can improve students’ cognitive learning outcomes and activeness.

Abstract

Good mental health requires the ability to manage emotions, thoughts, and actions in a healthy and adaptive manner. Parental upbringing and family support are crucial in maintaining the mental health of adolescents, as they are the closest individuals within the family. Emotional support from the family and access to mental health resources like psychologists or mental health clinics can assist adolescents in overcoming stress and pressures in their lives. This paper uses a literature review methodology to explore the family’s role in adolescent mental health. The findings based on the literature review indicate that the family has a significant influence on adolescent mental health. Parenting styles demonstrated by parents have a significant impact on the mental development of adolescents. The social support provided by parents to their children is likewise crucial. With strong social support from the family and the surrounding environment, adolescents can build positive relationships with others, effectively overcome challenges, and achieve desired life goals.

Abstract

This paper discusses activities related to parenting that are closely interconnected with culture and are described from the perspective of indigenous communities. The research employs a qualitative approach using ethnographic methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and subsequently analyzed using the coding technique with NVivo 12.2 software. The findings show that Malay ethnoparenting based on Tunjuk Ajar Melayu through the “Twenty-Five Principles” practiced by parents in Bukit Payung Village has a significant influence on children’s socialization with people around them and with the environment in which they live. Parenting practices applied by families of different ethnic backgrounds show variations across households. Nevertheless, the study identifies similarities in the core values embedded in parenting, which function as fundamental principles in the child-rearing process. The results further reveal that Riau Malay ethnoparenting implemented in the transmigration area of Bukit Payung Village prioritizes religious values as a primary foundation, along with tolerance for differences, humility toward others, integrity and courage, and the provision of space for the social environment to contribute to the formation of children’s cultural identity.

Abstract

The development of technology makes learning media interesting to use and makes learning materials easier to understand. One form of interesting learning media is infographic media. Infographic media has become an effective teaching material in biology learning. Infographic media is closely related to the role of visual hierarchy. Visual hierarchy is an aspect that helps readers understand information in a structured and systematic manner. The method used in this research is exploratory descriptive. The researcher collected general information related to biology teaching materials and research studies from Biology Education students of UIN Alauddin Makassar who used infographic media as teaching materials. The analysis of visual literacy was based on the theory of visual hierarchy. In terms of visual hierarchy, three teaching material media have been implemented with a good visual hierarchy. The content, through a combination of colors, shapes or elements, an appropriate layout, and the selection of text models, creates contrast. This shows that a good understanding of visual hierarchy can produce infographics that are not only aesthetic but also comfortable for readers to read. Infographic teaching materials used for viral materials, the phylum Echinodermata, and the digestive system have followed an appropriate visual hierarchy as teaching material media. Of the three infographic media used as teaching materials, all have followed the principles of visual hierarchy.
