Abstract

Two experiments were conducted in the IRD-Gamet Laboratory, Montpellier, France. The first was to evaluate the recovery of Heterobranchus longifilis female gonad after induced ovulation, under tropical condition. Oocyte diameter was used as indicator of the recovery rate following by induced breeding, hatching rate and abnormality of larvae. The results showed that the recovery was about 28 to 35 days after ovulation. The second was carried out to improve the milt production by hormone treatments. Volume of intratesticular sperm and the number of spermatozoa were observed. The results indicated that the treatmens did not prove any significant difference.

Abstract

Sembilan Island waters is one of the catch fishery production centers in Bone Bay, South Sulawesi. It was informed that the capture has decreased since 1999, which might be caused by  coral reef damage although the damage precentage was still unknown. An observation on coral reef condition was conducted in the waters of Sembilan Island, South Sulawesi, on June and November 2000 using scuba diving set and under water writing tools. Monitoring of coral reef condition was conducted in 7 m depth up to 100 m length of shore line in seven stations employing a line intercept transect method. The data of coral reef were analysed by using dBase III and lifeform programs. The results showed that living coral around station I, III, and IV were generaly in good condition except in the stations V, VI and VII, which were in middle condition and in station II, which was in bad condition. The lifeform of coral reef in Sembilan Island were predominated by Acropora Branching (ACB), Nonacropora Branching (CB), Coreal Foliose (CF), and Coral Massive (CM) meanwhile other benthic fauna were predominated by Soft Coral (SF) and Sponge (SP).

Abstract

Growth response of two C3 (wheat and kale) and two C4 species (Echinochloa crusgallii and Amaranthus caudatus) were analyzed in response to drought stress under different CO2 concentrations, i.e. ambient (350 ppm) and double ambient (700 ppm).  Drought was given by withholding water for several days until the plants were wilted.  Drought stress reduced relative water content (RWC), water potential (Yw), osmotic potential (Ys), net photosynthesis (Pn) and plant growth of all species.  During moderate drought Pn of C3 species decreased considerably, while that of C4 species was still sustained, suggesting that C4 cycle is important to sustain Pn during the beginning of the drought.  Doubled [CO2] enhanced growth of all species indicated by increase of plant height and leaf area, but the growth of C3 species was higher than that of C4 one.  Increase of growth due to high [CO2] was associated with an increase of Pn in C3 species but not in C4 species.  High [CO2] caused C4 species had RWC, Yw and Ys higher than C3 species during drought stress.  Increase of growth in C4 species may be associated by an increase of plant water status due to high [CO2].

Abstract

Sheath blight and rice blast are two important diseases in rice caused respectively by fungi Rhizoctonia solani and Pyricularia oryzae resulting in considerable yield loss. A study on the segregation pattern of chiI gene among four progenies, i.e. lines 1,7,9 and 20, followed by bioassays of both pathogens was conducted.  PCR analysis using specific primers for chiI gene in 30 plant samples from each line was employed to know the segregation pattern.  The results showed that three of the four lines, i.e. 1, 7, and 9 performed Mendelian segregation of 3 : 1. Southern blot analysis further applied on line 1 revealed the presence of six copies of chiI gene. Bioassay of P. oryzae carried out at vegetative phase indicated that all lines were susceptible to blast, on the other hands,  R. solani bioassay held at heading phase showed that they were all resistant to this fungi.

Abstract

The research was conducted to understand the breeding aspects of the Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus), which were caged in flocks and as a pair, in two aviaries of the Animal House Laboratory of Zoological Division, the Research Center of Biology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Cibinong. From January 2002 until January 2005, 11 birds of the Rainbow Lorikeets were used in this research,. The birds were divided into two groups, the first group (9 individuals)  were caged in the first aviary  and the second one (2 individuals) were caged in the second aviary. The  size of each aviary room (LxWxH) was 3.32 m x 1.82 m x 2.85 m. The aviary rooms were equiped with the roosting, nest boxes, feeding and drinking water places. Foods and water were given in cafetaria everyday, starting from about 08.00 a.m. The foods consisted of bird food/”pur” (150 grams), white bread (15 grams), cooked quail eggs (60-70 grams), the lampung bananas (300 grams), slices of corn (100 grams), bean sprouts (50 grams), and palm sugar (50 grams). All of the igredients were mixed with 450-500 ml water and were then pulverized. The birds were also given some vegetables. The results were as follows: the Rainbow Lorikeets caged in flocks have produced two chicks and those in a pair only produced one chick. The clutchs consisted of  1-2 eggs. Eggs were white, smooth and their shape ovale. Average weight of the eggs was 7-8 grams. Weight of day old chicks was about 8 grams, those chicks were still blind and with out featheres (“altricial”). Incubation periods was 25-26 days, and incubated either by the female or the male. Fledging period was 71 days or more. The growing of the featheres and young birds of the Rainbow Lorikeets will be also discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Nepenthes mirabilis has been widely known as an insectivorous plant species. A study on the growing behaviour of N. mirabilis in Teluk Kaba, Kutai National Park has been carried out. As many as approximately 840 individuals consisting of 307 rosettes and 533 mature plants were found. Variation in tendril’s position was observed in nine rosettes plants and in 22 mature plants. On the other hand, variations in leaf colour appeared in eight individuals. Variations in colour of pitcher and tendril were found in 17 individuals. The natural habitat of N. mirabilis was very specific, and it was also noted that 13 species were assosiated with this plant species. Further result will be discussed in this paper.

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to obtain good populations of Oreochromis niloticus based on their growth performances. Four populations, i.e GIFT-6, Tempe, Local, and GIFT-3 were used in this study. Sixteen 16 cages laid in four earthen ponds in the Cijeruk Research Installation, Bogor, were used as replication. The results showed that there were no significant difference among four populations for biomass, but a significant difference among populations was observed on length parameter (F < 0.01),in which the local population was the best.
