Abstract

The sea waters of Makassar City have oceanographic characters that are influenced by land. The character then influences the distribution of various organisms that live in it. One example is zooplankton. In this study, an analysis of the density distribution of these organisms was carried out to explain phenomena that might be different and not common in marine waters. In fact, the density distribution was found to be highest in locations near the mainland where the highest density was detected in zones 2 and 1 (zone near land). Zooplankton distribution is directly proportional to the level of turbidity in the sea waters of Makassar City. Keywords : Abundance, Zooplankton, Sea, Macassar.

Abstract

The pollution of Pb and Cu has occurred in coastal areas of Bandar Lampung caused by metal manufacturing, shipyard, port activities, coal stockpiling and power plants. It was feared to cause accumulation of Pb and Cu in green mussels cultivated around Pasaran Island. This study aimed to analyze metals of Pb and Cu in body water of Pasaran Island and shellfish using the MP-AES method. The results showed that the highest concentrations of Pb and Cu in body water were 0.63 mg / l and 0.14 mg / l respectively. The highest concentrations of Pb and Cu in green mussels tissues were 8.45 mg / kg and 14.32 mg / kg. This condition showed that the Pb concentration has exceeded the allowed thresold so it was feared impact to health problems for the community. Keywords: Metals, concentration, Pasaran Island, green mussel

Abstract

Increasing of populations and activities has also increase the town waste, mainly of the organic waste.  As nowadays had no comprehensive handled optimally. One option of organic waste processing is by compost production, by means of organic biodegradation. The aim of the research is to find out whether 4 types of bacteria, namely: Psedomonas sp., Flavobacterium sp., Acinetobacter sp., Bacillus subtilis are synergies into consortium bacteria, whether potential consortium bacteria as organic waste decomposing bacteria, how compost from bacteria consortium, , smell, color and temperature. The synergy bacteria test was performed by scraping four types of bacteria on Nutrien Broth medium (NB). Compost processing was done by application of bacterial consortium into the municipal organic waste and incubated for about 8 weeks. The results showed that four types of bacteria, namely: Pseudomonas sp., Flavobacterium sp., Acinetobacter sp., Bacillus subtilis is the synergy and potential as a consortium bacterium. Compost is formed after 4 weeks of incubation with crumbed texture, black color, soil like odor and temperature 28oC.Key words : Bacterial consortium, mangrove leaf litter, organic waste, composting.

Abstract

This research was conducted in two seasons, during May (dry season) to August (rainy season) to find out the water condition and the pollution index of Makassar City waters. The water sampling points represent tourism activities, ports and ponds cultivation with the number of sampling points each of 3 sub stations. water sampling was collectt using niskin bottles and analyzed in the health laboratory of South Sulawesi Province and parameters measured were BOD, Disolved Oxygen, Phosphate, Nitrate, pH, Total Phenol, Sulphate and Salinity. the result shows that Makassar City waters have Pollution index calculations are classified into mild pollution categories. Environmental parameters that still meet the quality standards for marine biota include DO, pH and Salinity, while parameters that have exceeded the quality standard include BOD, Phosphate (except dry season measurements), Phenol, Nitrate and Sulfide. Keywords : Water quality, Pollution indeks, Makassar City.

Abstract

Condition Index (CI) of mussel is one of parameters used to analysis mussel health.  Interstingly, many researchers produce different CI formula.  This study was conducted to study the most appropriate CI formula to determine the health of green mussel, Perna vidiris. Four hundred of green mussel were colected from pollueted (Makassar) and expected unpolluted (Mandalle, Pangkajene and Kepulauan/Pangkep) areas. Afterward, the mussels were tranfered using cool box to laboratory for further analysis.  Some morphomometry parameters, tissue and shell weigth were measured to fulfil 10 types of CI formula. Lead content of mussel’s tissue was analyzed using AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry). The result revealed that the use of CI1-6 and 9 were influenced by shell lenght.  In contrast, the use of CI7 and 8 were not affected by shell length. The average of lead content in mussel’s tissue was 7.87 ± 0.53.  This value has exceeded the consumption threshold for shellfish biota. The results suggested that CI 8 is the most practical condition index used for environmental monitoring. Keywords : Valuable Condition Index, Makassar Waters, Toxicity of Lead, Eco-sentinel Organism, green mussel health
