Abstract

This study aims to explore deeply on the use of electronic mind mapping in order to promote students’ engagement in English class, especially in speaking-based activities. The method used was descriptive qualitative with purposive sampling. The instruments for collecting data were class observation, interview, and questionnaire sheets (triangulation technique). The participant was first graders of 89 Junior High School, Jakarta. The finding showed that the use of electronic mind mapping gave the benefit to students’ speaking activities. They had effective, behavior and cognitive engagement when doing their tasks in using electronic mind mapping. They had a positive perception of using that application because they had new knowledge of it, high learning motivation and participate actively in learning.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning is one of the major challenges second or foreign language learners find during the process of learning a language. One way to alley the burden is to assist students in becoming independent learners during the process of vocabulary learning. It could be achieved through instructing learners to apply vocabulary learning strategies as efficient as possible. The main pursuit of the present article is to suggest a vocabulary learning strategy for training EFL learners in acquiring the target words. The vocabulary learning strategy meant here named Personal Word Lists. This strategy helps the learners to enrich their vocabulary acquisition considering the multiple forms of strategies, such as cognitive, memory, metacognitive, activation and affective strategies. The multiple forms of those strategies are implied through note-taking, imagery mediation, background knowledge relations, semantic mapping/elaboration, senses, rehearsal and encoding strategies. In doing so, the basic concepts of vocabulary learning strategies and rationale or sample for strategy application are presented. It is assumed that this strategy may lead the learners to reach meaningful representation and enhance their vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

Speaking is the big problem of students in non-English major to be taught. Once the students are asked to practice speaking, they seem to be anxious and do not know what should be spoken. Storytelling is one of the alternative techniques to solve this problem. The aim of this study was to find out the significant difference between students’ speaking achievement after they were taught by using storytelling technique. The quasi-experimental study was the method of the study. The one group pretest-posttest design approach was used in this study. The study was conducted to fourth semester S1 Nursing students at STIK Siti Khadijah Palembang. The population of the study was all fourth semester S1 Nursing students at STIK Siti Khadijah Palembang in 2017. The total number of the population was 96 students. The sample of the study was 24 fourth semester S1 Nursing students at STIK Siti Khadijah Palembang in 2017. Systematic sampling was used to collect the sample. The test was administered twice as pre-test and post-test. The results of the tests were analyzed by using t-test through SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) program. The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference in speaking achievement before and after applying a conversation class based on a paired sample t-test

Abstract

The type of this research is Descriptive Qualitative research. It is aimed to find out the cause of students’ problem in speaking English, student’anxiety. The subjects of this study are 21 students of Second Grade KC 1 SMKN 3 Bengkulu City. In this research, the researcher collected the data by using data rubric of English student presentation assessment and Questionnaire. Then, there were several steps in the procedure of data analysis which was known as finding the data, analyze the data and conclude the conclusion and suggestion. According to matrix table that the researcher used to analyze the students speaking skill in pronunciation, intonation, fluency, content, and average level of speaking, the researcher got the result that showed the speaking skill of the students in second grade KC1 SMKN 3 Bengkulu City is on medium level. From the questionnaire, this result showed that there are six reasons why the students are not anxious to speak English, such as lack of familiarity with the task, fear of making mistakes, low motivation, input that can not be understood, lack of confidence, low English ability. So that, the researcher gave a suggestion to solve that problem, such as looking for friends, preparation, relaxation, think positive and resignation.

Abstract

Nowadays, people are expected to be able to write and literate. As one of the important skills in language learning, writing has been considered as an important role in all aspects of life. In order to help our students having a good skill in writing, the use of technology is chosen to be integrated in the learning process. And Blogging is one of the activity that can be used to motivate the students to write actively and constructively. By using blog, teachers can help students to write constructively, promote student’s autonomy and enhance their motivation.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the difficulties of XI IPA 2 student of SMA N 3 Bengkulu Tengah in writing analytical exposition texts. The objective of this research was to find out the students’ difficulties in writing analytical exposition texts in the generic structure and the language feature. The method that was used in this study was a mixed method which consisted of a qualitative and quantitative approach. The data of this research were gathered from the analytical exposition writing test and interview. There are 52.78% students who got difficulties in the use of passive sentence and in the use simple present tense. Then 44.50% of students who cannot write the argument correctly. Based on the result, the researcher suggested to the teacher to pay more attention to teaching analytical exposition text. For the students, the researcher is suggesting to have more reading activity to enrich their vocabulary mastery and learn more about the use of passive sentence and the use of simple present tense in writing analytical exposition text.
