Abstract

Into the Wild is a novel written by Jon Krakauer. The novel tells the story about a man, John McCandless, who wants to be free from all the things that he does not like. The story begins when he escapes from his daily life and lived in the free place, Alaska. He wants to live in Alaska in order to get his real freedom where he can do many things that he likes. This study analyzed the reason why the main character, John, wants to escape. To analyze the novel, intrinsic and extrinsic approaches were used. Objective theory was used because the writer analyzed the aspect of literary work itself. To support the analysis, a psycology approach was used by using the behaviorist theory. The findings indicated that there were several reasons that stimulated Chris to escape and disappear from his daily life. They were anger, love, and infatuated.

Abstract

This paper discusses about the effectiveness of simulation and role play techniques on students’ English speaking skill. This was based on some problems faced by students either in the process or production. To find out the effectiveness, simulation was treated in experimental group with 22 students, and role play technique was treated in control group with 27 students. These two group treatments were selected randomly by using cluster sampling from the population, the third year students of medical faculty of Baiturrahmmah University Padang which were classified into eight classes. This research was conducted for 8 meetings. After 8 meetings, the data were collected by the posttests and scored by two reviewers. Then the students’ average scores from the two reviewers in the experimental group were compared to the students’ average scores from the two reviewers in control group by t-test. The aim was to test the researchhypothesis. From the calculation of t-test, t-observed yielded 3.89. The total case degree of freedom was 45 ((22-1) + (25-1)). T-table at the 0.05 p-leveland 40 degree of freedom (the closest df) results in a figure of 2.02. This calculation reveals that t-observed could exceed the t-table. It means that theresearch hypothesis was statistically accepted, and null hypothesis was rejected. Therefore, the simulation technique gives better effect on students’English speaking skill than the role play technique.

Abstract

Code-switching is a language alternation used by students speaking English as second or foreign language in communication. It is effectively used to create a communicative interaction in natural settings of foreign language, that is, classroom settings in Indonesia. However, Indonesian teachers teaching English consider switching codes as language competence failure. This study proved that using Indonesian while expressing ideas in English was effectively used to meet sociolinguistic functions- equivalence, floor-holding, reiteration, and conflict control. In addition, it was a communicative strategy used by EFL learners to overcome communication difficulties to achieve an intended communication. Therefore, this paper places a great importance of utilizing code-switching for classroom interaction for beginners as proved by this study. By the findings of this study, it is expected that code-switching is not considered as a communicative competence failure in learning English as a foreign language, but as communication strategy a continuity of the speech.

Abstract

Class distinction is a differentiation of social class in capitalist society in which the dominant class i.e., the capital owners exploit the subordinate class i.e., the working class to gain big economic profit in the process of mass production. The extreme class distinction results in form of bad treatments such as low wages, long working hours (12 to 19 hours per day), and the imposition of bad discipline and fine system. The objective of this research was to reveal the class distinction encountered by the main character – Liza Doolittle – in George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion as a reflection of a real social condition in capitalist society. In fact, this condition has brought along with it some social implications toward the society such as dehumanization, human exploitation, and poverty that affectsocial life of British people all over the country. This was a qualitative research using two main theories i.e., 1) Theory of Homology postulated by Lucien oldmann which was used to prove the interdependent relationship between the society which is told in Shaw’s Pygmalion and the real society in England, and 2) Marxist criticism of some scholars which is utilized to analyze class distinction in Pygmalion which is assumed as the portrait of the unstopped struggle of the proletariat to achieve their rights ignored by the bourgeoisie for hundreds of years. The result of the study showed that the social condition in England in the end of nineteenth century to the early twentieth century was mostly affected by the practice of class distinction and human exploitation in industry sphere. Meanwhile, the class struggle which was experienced by the main character of Pygmalion was the portrait of the struggle of the working class to free themselves from poverty, to release them from the capitalist’ oppression, and to gain the admission from the society that they have equal dignity as other human beings in society.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the effectiveness unfocused tasks and focused tasks in improving students’ oral English production. Because these unfocused tasks and focused tasks focus on meaning, not on form, they are strong version of communicative language teaching. The research questions of this research are: (1) is there a significant difference of students’ oral English production between students who are taught through unfocused tasks and students who are taught through focused tasks? (2) What problems do students find to speak English unfocused tasks? (3) What facilitates students to speak English in unfocused tasks? (4) What are the solutions of problems found in unfocused tasks? This was a mixing method research where of the three types of mixed methods researchdesigns, the QUAN-qual model (the explanatory mixed methods design) was used. In this model, experiment and descriptive methods were used. This reserach was done at STBA Prayoga Padang where two groups of students at the same level were involved. One group was taught through unfocused tasks and the other group was taught through focused tasks. After doing the reserach, it was found that unfocused tasks and focused tasks can improve students’ oral English production. It was found that unfocused tasks have better effect on students’ oral English fluency and focused tasks have better effect on students’ oral English accuray in terms of grammar. However, unfocused tasks have better effect than focused tasks on students’ oral English production. In other words, there was a significant difference of oral English production of students who were taught through unfocused tasks and students who were taught though focused tasks.
