Abstract

This article aims at facilitating literacy empowerment for Indonesian students learning English by utilizing one of Indonesian English Newspapers, “TheJakartaPost” as a driving force of literacy. The rationale is that  “TheJakartaPost” newspapers have a built-in capacity to motivate students to be literate readers due to real life contexts of Indonesia, up-to date information, and frequently used words. This, at the end, will enhance their English skills. Some research found out that the main medium used by English teachers to empower literacy is a number of books. However, a number of research reveal that Indonesian students are poor in literacy. Of course, this reaseach finding correlates to poor litaracy in English which leads to low ability in English skills. Therefore, this article discusses pedagogical reasons of using “TheJakartaPost” as a driving force of literacy and suggested teaching procedures. It is expected that English teachers use “TheJakartaPost” as one of the alternatives to help students literate for enhancing their English skills. Keywords:  TheJakartaPost: Literacy; English Skills

Abstract

This article reports the types of phrasal verbs and their translated variations into Indonesian language in a novel by Sir Arthur ConanDoyle. It is interesting to study phrasal verbs due to their special meanings. The data were gained form two novels, namely, A Study in Scarlet, the English version and Penelusuran Benang Merah, the Indonesian version. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The findings of this research showed that the types of phrasal verbs are: transitive, intransitive, separable, and inseparable phrasal verbs. I addition, it was found that there are some variations of translated phrasalverbs in Indonesian language: one-word, two-word, and more than two words.

Abstract

The aims of this article were to find the tendency of yellow journalism headline which often appears and to reveal the function of language in yellow journalismheadline. The data sources in this research were taken from English printed magazines and newspapers which were indicated as yellow journalism product.This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The research findings indicated that the form of headline was simple sentence. Simple sentence had some patterns: subject + verb, subject + verb + object, subject + verb + complement and subject + verb + object + complement. It was also found that a headline existed of phrase. The tendency of phrase were: noun phrase, verb phrase, and prepositional phrase. The headline had referential function , expressive function and social function.

Abstract

Code-switching is a language alternation used by students speaking English as second or foreign language in communication. It is effectively used to create a communicative interaction in natural settings of foreign language, that is, classroom settings in Indonesia. However, Indonesian teachers teaching English consider switching codes as language competence failure. This study proved that using Indonesian while expressing ideas in English was effectively used to meet sociolinguistic functions- equivalence, floor-holding, reiteration, and conflict control. In addition, it was a communicative strategy used by EFL learners to overcome communication difficulties to achieve an intended communication. Therefore, this paper places a great importance of utilizing code-switching for classroom interaction for beginners as proved by this study. By the findings of this study, it is expected that code-switching is not considered as a communicative competence failure in learning English as a foreign language, but as communication strategy a continuity of the speech.
