Abstract

Jobs tears (Coix Lacryma-jobi L.) was a cereal crop that used as high nutrient food and animal feed ingredients. The purpose of this research was to design and test the performance of jobs tears seeds thresher machine of solid cylinder roll type. The machine parts consisted of machines frame, threshing cylinder, jobs tears seeds container, gear transmission, gearbox, and electric motors. Design process of its consisted of structural design and functional design to managed all parts of threshers. This machine was driven by an electric motor. The power and rotational speed of electric motor was 1 HP (1.400) rpm that was transmitted to the gearbox by V-belt and pulley. Speed of electric motor rotation was modified from1,440 rpm to 30 rpm, 38 rpm and 50 rpm by a gearbox with 1:30 ratio. gearbox rotation was transmitted to threshing tool (solid cylinder roll).  Rotation of this two solid cylinders roll  had a clearance of 6,5 mm that suppressed jobs tears seeds, so the seeds could be separated from the stems.  This research resulted the jobs tears seeds thresher machine of solid cylinder roll type. The optimum rotation speed of cylinder was 50 rpm, with loss percentage 79.68% and percentage of good threshed jobs tears seeds 88.57%. This machine had a work capacity of 50,45 kg jobs tears seeds per hour. Keywords: Jobs tears, Thresher of solid cylinder roll type.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to observe the physical properties of two native of sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) stored at two different conditions: temperature of 30 -32 °C with RH 58 – 70 % and temperature of 25 – 26 °C with RH 80 - 95 %. The two native of sweet potatoes used as sample were Gisting, harvested at 6 - 7 months, and Marga, harvested at 3 - 4 months. Parameters measured periodically during 8-week storage are weight loss, water content, number and length of prune, and the total soluble solid. The results showed that the storage temperature and RH are relatively stable during observation. During storage at temperature of 25 - 26 oC and RH 85 – 90 %, the weight loss was minimized and the total soluble solid increated sligtly for both native sweet potatoes. The decreasing water content during storage is not significantly different between Gisting and Marga. The increasing in number and length of prune was followed by the gain of weight loss. Gisting has longer storage time compared to Marga based on the standard of weight loss. Keywords:Sweet potato, physical properties, temperature, RH

Abstract

Respiration rate was generally used as an indicator of the rate of metabolism for agricultural comodities.  The research aimed to determine the influence of gas composition to respiration rate and the changes of total acid, sweetness level and hardness level of banana (var. Janten) that was storaged at two different temperatures (room temperature (29 oC) and cold temperature(15 oC)).  This research was conducted by modifying the gas composition(O2, CO2, and N2) in the storage jar.  The results showed that respiration rate of banana tended to increase with time at both temperatures.  Total acid declined steadily at room temperature but fluctuated at cold temperature.  Sweetness level showed an increase and the hardness level showed a decrease with time at both temperatures during the storage process.  Modified atmosphere was able to extend shelf life of banana to 12 days at room temperature and 26 days at cold temperature.  The best gas composition for banana (var. Janten) was 4% O2, 5% CO2, and 91 % N2 (by volume). Keywords:Modified Atmosphere, Gas Composition, Respiration Rate, Total Acid, Sweetness Level, Hardness Level .

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of copper wires addition to the cloth wick on the performance of stove fueled by waste cooking oil. The study was divided into two stages.  First, is to test the capillarity of wick at different copper wires addition by observing flame quality, capillary height, and flaming period. Second, is to design a stove based on the results obtained in the first stage and to test performance of the stove in boiling water. Parameters to be observed include boiling time, rate of fuel consumption, and thermal efficiency. The results showed that the addition of copper wires increase the wick’s capillarity characterized by increasing absorption of the used cooking oil. Wick with a composition of  20 % copper wires and 80 % cloth produced the best capillarity (7.5 cm height). Waste cooking oil stove was capable to boil 3 kg of water in 15 minutes with a fuel consumption rate of 0.1275 kg/hour. The stove has a thermal efficiency of 33,33 %. Keywords: Stove, Waste cooking oil, Copper wire added wick.

Abstract

Job’s tears (Coix lacrhryma jobi L.) was a plant that came from South Asia and East Asia. The distribution of this plant was expanded to Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. In Indonesia, Job’s tears was found in Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan. Its seeds had many benefits as herbs or plant consumption. Threshing process of this plant was still using a traditional way. This research was purposed to design and test the performance of jali thresher machine type rubber roll. This research was conducted in February 2013 to March 2013 in the Laboratory of Agricultural Engineering, Department of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung. This research procedure included several stages: design, assembly, testing results, and data analysis stage. Observations were made for machine capacity per hour, percentage of threshed seeds, and percentage of good or damaged threshed seeds. This research used 3 cylinder rotational speeds: 50 RPM, 38 RPM and 30 RPM. Results of this research indicated that this machine threshed seeds by 47 kg/ hour. Keywords: Job’s tears, threshing, and Rubber Roll

Abstract

Salak (Salacca edulis REINW) is an the original fruit from Indonesia. One of the most popular salak varieties is pondoh. The agribusiness opportunity of salak pondoh  is quite profitable, and therefore it is needed special handling to withstand and prolong shelf life. This study was conducted at the Laboratory of Bioprocess Engineering and Post Harvest Agricultural Engineering Department Agriculture Faculty, University of Lampung, October until December 2011. Treatment was carried out on 4 jars with CO2 gas discharge and air,and two temperature treatments, room temperature and cold temperature (10-12oC). The observed data rate of respiration, measurement of total dissolved solids and the calculation of the level of acidity. The results showed that (1) the measurement of respiration rates was fluctuate at the cooler temperatures storage than at room temperature, (2) The total dissolved solids of the two temperatures treatments were not  different, (3)  the level of acidity in the cold storage higher than at room temperature (4) storage temperature and composition was of the air - CO2 greatly influenced the shelf life and chemical changes. Keywords:Dynamic storage, Shelf life, Respiration,  Temperature, and Salak pondoh.

Abstract

The increase in fuel prices and electricity, husk of rice can be used by farmers as alternative energy for rough rice drying. Mechanical drying such as by using batch dryer can be used to overcome the advantage of sun drying especially in rainning season. This research aim to examine the performance of batch dryer lab scale (capacity of 15 kg - 25 kg of grain) with husk of rice fuel. This research was conducted at three variations of thickness which were 15,3 cm, 20,3 cm, and 25,5 cm. The results showed that the average of drying temperature and moisture content for the treatments were respectivelly, 34,78 °C and 13,97%; 34,20°C and 13,77%; 37,92 °C and 13,67%. The higher temperature used the shorter the drying time and the less thick of rough rice the shorter the drying process. The number of rice husk fuel used for the three different thicknesses were 12 kg, 14 kg and 16 kg, respectivelly. Further, the drying durations for each treatments were 10 hours, 11,3 hours, and 12 hours, respectivelly and the drying efficiencies were 3,05%, 3,41%, and 3.63%, respectivelly. One kg of rice husk could be used to dry about 1,35 kg of wet rough rice. Keywords: Rough rice, Batch dryer, Drying, Fuel, Husk of rice.
