Abstract

Fluorescent light is one kind of lamp that can be used in hydroponics systems in the room (indoor).  The distance of lights placement to the plant needs to be precisely determined to obtain optimal plant growth.  The objectives of this study was to determine the effect of fluorescent lamp distance on plant growth of kailan (Brassica oleraceae) with wick system hydroponics in the room (indoor).  Research used a randomized complete block (RCB).  There were five treatments such as one treatment used sun exposure (N0), and four artificial lights each using a 5x36 watt fluorescent bulb.  Four artificial lights treatment were done indoors using different distances between the light to the surface of the planting media.  The 4 treatments were 20 cm (N1), 40 cm (N2), 60 cm (N3), and 80 cm (N4).  Each treatment consisted of 4 plants totaling 20 plant samples. Plants treated in the room were placed in compartments or growth chambers with the dimension of 60 cm x 60 cm x 110 cm.  While plants treated out the room were placed in a greenhouse.  Data of plants production was analyzed using analysis of variance, followed LSDcomparision with á = 0,05.  The result showed that distance treatment of 20 cm from the bulb to the surface of planting media (N1) was the best among the other artificial lighting treatment based on all parameters observed such as number of leaves, plant height, leaf area, leaf area index, biomass weight with upper part and lower part.  However, it was still less optimal as compared to the treatmen of sun exposure (N0).Keywords: fluorescent lamps, kailan, indoor hydroponics, wick system hydroponics

Abstract

Hydroponics is an alternative way of farming in a limited area of urban.  It is Easy, controlled, and can be done on media without soil, even in a house.  In hydroponic watering system done  automatic and the environment can be controlled to prevent the plant from pests, it is suitable for people who spent more routine work in the office than at home. However, hydroponics nutrients is very difficult to obtain, even in Lampung no body has sold. Aquaponics is another alternative that could be used to grow crops in a limited area and the nutrients are easier to find because it uses fish waste. This study was conducted to evaluate whether the fish waste could replace hydroponic nutrients to support the growth of mustard plants. This research compared yield of mustard plants grown in three treatments, namely L1 (hydroponics), L2 (Aquaponics using comet fish), and L3 (Aquaponics using tilapia).  The study was conducted at the residence of Amin Khairi, St. Said Sabri, No. 58B, Kedaton, Bandar Lampung and Laboratory of Agricultural Engineering Department, University of Lampung.  The variables tested were plant height, leaf number, root length, and the total weight of harvest. The research showed that the growth of mustard plants at hydroponic was better than at aquaponics systems.  The average plant height at week four were 24,6 cm; 9,1 cm; 14,0 cm of L1, L2, and L3, respectively.  The average number of leaves at week four were 10,2; 7,2; 7,7 of L1, L2, and L3, respectively.  The average root lenght at week four were 27,3 cm; 10,6 cm; 15,0 cm of L1, L2, and L3, respectively. The total weight of mustard plants of L1, L2, and L3 were 77,08; 9,7; 28,6 grams; respectively. Keywords: hydroponics, Aquaponics, nutrients, mustard

Abstract

Water pump that used by farmers for irrigation in general is ussualy gasoline pump. Using gasoline as a fuel will certainly add to the production costs, because the price of gasoline is more expensive and its availability are declining . Therefore, farmers should choose an alternative fuel that is cheaper to minimize production costs, for example is LPG fuel. The purpose of this research were to test the uniformity of flow performance, uniformity of distribution and application rate of portable sprinkler irrigation with a pump of gas-fire fuel pump. This research was conducted at the Marga Agung village, Jati Agung sub-district, South Lampung  in May-June 2015. Modified propulsion pump on the fuel system (carburettor) was replaced with a universal carburetor throat. Pump performance test conducted on a portable sprinkler irrigation systems (Tusi, 2013) using three variations of the pressure (1 bar, 1.25 bar and 1.5 bar). The tests conducted to determine coefficient of uniformity (CU), beam diameter, and weeting diameter. Modifications engine pump causes fuel consumption is more efficient, but the engine tends heat faster. The value of the test results obtained 1bar pressure by 32,2% CU, the discharge of 0.64 m3/h and wetting diameter of 15 m. Whereas at a pressure of 1.25 bar of 47,1% obtained CU, the discharge of 0.79 m3/h and a wetting diameter of 16 m. Varriation of pressure effected on pump performance test measurement results. The average needs of fuel gas was 0.47 kg per hour pump operation.Key word: modification, LPG, Portable Sprinkle, performance test

Abstract

Drip irrigation has been applied to provide water and nutrient solution to plants. The application of drip irrigation system at this time is not precise yet generally because water is provided based on time schedule, not base on soil water content or plant requirement for water. This research aims to design and test the performance of an automatic device that control drip irrigation system automatically; using  microcontroller Arduino Mega accomplished with Zigbee technology connection. The device works based on soil water content.  Water pump will be turned on when the soil moisture is less than critical water content, and will be turned off when the soil water content is higher than field capacity. Sensor calibration and validation were performed by using three different soil textures: silt loam, loamy sand, and sandy loam.  Each soil sample was mixed with compost by ratio of 5: 1.  The testing of the device; however, was done by using sandy loam soil texture. Sensor calibration showed that relationship between voltage and soil water content was linear with R2=0,88; 0,95; 0,96 respectively for  silt loam, loamy sand, and sandy loam.  While, validation showed that errors were 0,63%; 0,52%; 0,60% respectively for silt loam, loamy sand, and sandy loam.  The results also indicated that linear regressions (correlation between voltage and soil water content) turned out to be applicable for specific Soil Texture.  Therefore, this device may not be used for general soil textures. The result of the test showed that the automatic device could work properly.  Interval of data transmission was properly done per minute rather than per second. Keywords:Drip Irrigation, Microcontroller, Automatic Control, Soil Water Content.
