Abstract

This study investigates the application of parametric design principles within low-tech architectural contexts, with a particular focus on material dimensions’ constraints and opportunities. Parametric design, which is traditionally associated with high-tech environments and advanced computational tools, offers a flexible and adaptive approach to problem-solving in architecture. This study explores how these principles can be effectively translated into low-tech settings, where material limitations and local craftsmanship play pivotal roles. By examining case studies through three simple projects and design processes, this research aims to develop a set of rules and guidelines for implementing parametric design using accessible materials and techniques. This paper analyzes how different material dimensions, such as size, shape, and structural properties, can be manipulated to achieve innovative and sustainable architectural solutions. Finally, the findings of this study will contribute to a broader understanding of how parametric design can be democratized, making advanced design methodologies available to a wider range of practitioners and communities.

Abstract

Kata kunci :Arsitektur Publik, Bagonjong, Kekuasaan Simbolik, Pierre Bourdieu, Identitas Pasca-PRRI.AbstractThe visual landscape of Padang City is currently dominated by the use of bagonjong roofs across almost all public building typologies, ranging from government offices to commercial facilities. This research is motivated by the urgency to understand this phenomenon not merely as an aesthetic trend or cultural preservation, but as a complex socio-political interaction in the aftermath of the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PRRI). This study aims to dissect the meaning behind this architectural homogenization and how architecture is utilized as a tool for identity negotiation, employing Pierre Bourdieu's sociological lens on symbolic power. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature study approach. The author synthesizes data from historical archives, architectural studies, and sociology to map the dynamics between the community's collective trauma and the built environment development policies in West Sumatra. The results indicate that the phenomenon of "bagonjongisasi" serves as an instrument of symbolic power exercised by regional elites to restore the symbolic capital of the Minangkabau people, which was shattered by the separatist stigma following the PRRI. The application of bagonjong roofs functions as rites of institution that play a paradoxical role: on one hand, it successfully restores ethnic visibility and pride in the public sphere, but on the other, it reduces the complexity of cultural identity into a mere static visual silhouette sanctioned by state logicKeywords : Public Architecture, Bagonjong, Symbolic Power, Pierre Bourdieu, Post-PRRI Identity.
