Abstract

Conventional traffic volume surveys used to identify peak hours require extensive data collection periods, often taking up to 84 days. Although Narendra (2022) proposed leveraging the Google Maps "Popular Times" feature as a rapid alternative, empirical validation regarding its reliability on urban secondary collector roads remains limited. This study aims to empirically validate the effectiveness of this Google Maps-based peak hour estimation method. Primary traffic data were gathered through direct field observations over a 3-hour window (comprising 1 hour before, during, and 1 hour after the predicted peak) across six two-lane two-way undivided (2/2 UD) urban secondary collector road segments in Semarang, Indonesia. Statistical t-tests and exploratory data analysis were employed to evaluate the alignment between empirical observations and Google Maps secondary data. Results reveal no statistically significant difference between empirical peak times and Google Maps "Popular Times" predictions, with observed time discrepancies ranging from -60 to +50 minutes. Consequently, this Google Maps-based methodology serves as a valid and efficient alternative for urban traffic counting survey. A 3-hour observation window encompassing pre-peak, peak, and post-peak periods is recommended for application.

Abstract

Flood hazard maps are a basic instrument of disaster risk management, yet their preparation normally assumes that streamflow, water level and inundation records are available for model calibration. This study therefore aims to establish a flood hazard mapping framework for data-scarce basins, and to examine how far the resulting classification depends on the assessment framework adopted. GPM satellite rainfall, DEMNAS topography, HWSD soil and MoEF land cover were combined with hydrological (HEC-HMS) and two-dimensional hydraulic (HEC-RAS) modeling to simulate the 2-, 5-, 10-, 25- and 50-year return periods. The GPM rainfall was bias-corrected against the BMKG Tugumulyo station and two hydrological configurations were run in parallel in place of calibration, with the simulated inundation verified against observed flood extents. Hazard was then classified under the BNPB, DEFRA and Australian Government frameworks. For the 25-year return period DEFRA produced the largest extreme hazard zone (467.74 ha), followed by BNPB (384.39 ha) and the Australian Government model (323.87 ha). All three-concentrate extreme hazard along the riverbanks, but their areas are not directly comparable because of differences in parameters and thresholds. Credible flood hazard mapping is therefore attainable without in-situ calibration data, while the BNPB framework still requires clearer definitions of the inundation threshold and of how the flood area and frequency indices are applied spatially.

Abstract

High-rise reinforced concrete buildings are susceptible to seismic forces due to their slenderness and flexibility, necessitating effective lateral load-resisting systems. This study investigates the optimal placement of shear walls to enhance seismic performance. A seven-story symmetrical building model was developed in ETABS v.9.7.4, following ASCE/SEI 7-16 and ACI 318-19 standards. Five configurations were analyzed: one control model without shear walls and four others with different wall arrangements. Nonlinear static pushover analysis was employed to evaluate structural response under lateral loading. Performance metrics such as natural period, story displacement, drift ratio, base shear capacity, and pushover behavior were examined. Results indicate that shear wall presence and positioning significantly impact seismic response. The model with symmetrically placed shear walls (Model 3) achieved the best performance, showing a 44.7% reduction in fundamental period, a 40% increase in base shear capacity, and a 47.5% decrease in story drift. These findings highlight the effectiveness of symmetric shear wall layouts in improving seismic resilience. This research offers practical guidance for structural engineers in optimizing lateral systems for earthquake-resistant high-rise buildings.

Abstract

Concrete with a low water-to-cement ratio (W/C 0.35) enhances compressive strength and environmental durability, but it often faces challenges related to workability, which can affect casting quality. This study aims to evaluate the impact of adding Areca nut husk fiber and superplasticizer on the compressive strength and workability of concrete at 7 and 28 days of curing. The experiment involved variations in concrete mixtures: normal concrete, concrete with 2.1% superplasticizer without fiber, and concrete with 2%, 2.5%, and 3% Areca nut husk fiber combined with 2.1% superplasticizer. Compressive strength tests followed ASTM C39 standards, while workability was measured using the slump test (ASTM C143). The results showed that adding 2% Areca nut husk fiber with 2.1% superplasticizer increased the compressive strength by 33.56% at 7 days and 23.14% at 28 days compared to normal concrete. This combination also resulted in the highest slump value of 9,8 cm, indicating improved workability. However, adding more than 2.5% fiber reduced compressive strength, suggesting an optimal fiber usage point. This study concludes that combining Areca nut husk fiber and superplasticizer improves low W/C ratio concrete performance without compromising workability, supporting the development of high-performance and environmentally friendly concrete.

Abstract

This study aims to monitor the surface area of 13 small reservoirs in the Southwest Rote District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform over a five-year period (2019–2024). The methodology involved the collection and processing of landsat satellite imagery, the integration of rainfall and rainy-day data from CHIRPS, and an analysis of changes in reservoir surface area over time. The study leveraged GEE’s cloud computing capabilities to efficiently process large-scale data. The results demonstrate that GEE is effective for mapping and monitoring changes in reservoir surface area, evidenced by a model accuracy (R²) of 0.8178 and a positive correlation (r) of 0.668 when compared against manual delineation measurements. Changes in reservoir surface area were analyzed to identify trends and patterns associated with factors such as rainfall, irrigation demands, and human activity. These findings provide crucial information for sustainable water resource management, particularly in the context of arid regions like NTT. The analysis also contributes to the understanding of hydrological dynamics in the area and establishes a foundation for improved decision-making regarding reservoir management. This study highlights the potential of GEE as a powerful tool for monitoring water resources in hard-to-reach areas and contributes to the development of remote sensing-based monitoring methodologies.
