Abstract

This study examines how pesantren-based female ulama negotiate religious authority in interpreting gender issues through social media. Focusing on three Indonesian figures, Ning Imaz Fatimatuz Zahra, Ning Sheila Hasina, and Ning Nadia Abdurrahman, the article analyzes selected YouTube videos that address gender justice, women’s roles, and Qur’anic interpretation. Using a qualitative approach and Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, the study examines three dimensions: textual construction, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The findings show that the three figures construct gender-just interpretations through different textual strategies. Ning Imaz frames gender discourse through justice, fitrah, and maslahah; Ning Sheila employs fiqh reasoning to reread women’s domestic and public roles; and Ning Nadia emphasizes theological equality through Qur’anic verses on faith and righteous deeds. At the level of discourse practice, their authority is negotiated through two modes of circulation: a popular-institutional model represented by NU Online and an academic-intellectual model represented by Universitas Islam Tribakti. Socioculturally, these practices demonstrate that social media does not replace traditional pesantren authority, but expands the ways it is articulated, distributed, and received in the digital public sphere. The study argues that female ulama from pesantren emerge as authoritative producers of gender discourse by combining scholarly sanad, institutional legitimacy, and digital communication strategies.

Abstract

This article examines the vernacularization of Qur’anic narratives in Tafsere Akorang Bettuwang Bicara Ogi by AGH. Muhammad Yunus Martan, focusing on the story of Adam in Q. 2:30–38 and the story of the cow in Q. 2:67–73. The study employs a qualitative approach based on content analysis of the tafsir text, with particular attention to Bugis diction, dialogic structure, narrative development, and moral explanation. The findings show that vernacularization in this tafsir operates through three main mechanisms. First, Bugis terms such as passelle, maddusa’-dusa’, napaccolo’i darae, pakerengngi tanae, and maddakkala bring Qur’anic concepts into the social vocabulary of Bugis readers. Second, dialogic expressions such as Eeee Adam, Ee mupancajigi accule-culeng?, pada makkedasi, and ellauangessiki animate the stories as accessible conversations. Third, moral explanations turn the narratives into ethical instruction on knowledge, obedience, repentance, compliance, the use of reason, and belief in God’s power. This article argues that Bugis tafsir functions as a form of local narrative pedagogy that connects the Arabic Qur’anic text, the authority of As’adiyah ulama, and the sociocultural experience of Bugis Muslim communities.

Abstract

This article examines the transformation in Quraish Shihab's delivery of Qur'anic exegesis on Surah Al-'Aṣr from television to digital format, by comparing the 2004 broadcast of Kajian Tafsir Al-Mishbah on MetroTV — accessed via a third-party re-upload on YouTube — and an episode of Shihab & Shihab produced natively on YouTube in 2022. Drawing on a comparative content analysis of Shihab's utterances, delivery structure, and interpretive emphases across both videos, this study yields three findings. First, the television format positions Shihab within an expository, pedagogical-televisual logic, while the digital format shifts him toward a more concise and personal dialogic-digital logic. Second, the change in medium produces semantic compression: the fundamental structure of interpretation is retained, but linguistic detail is reduced and explanatory emphasis is redirected toward practical values that are immediately relevant to the digital audience's experience. Third, Shihab's interpretive authority does not diminish upon entering the digital space; rather, it undergoes reconfiguration — shifting from authority built through expansive exposition to authority built through communicative proximity and the capacity to condense meaning. These findings enrich the study of the mediatization of religion and digital religious authority by demonstrating how a single exegete, a single surah, and two distinct media can serve as an entry point for reading the negotiation between the substance of Qur'anic interpretation and media logic.

Abstract

Studies of Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia have largely focused on Indonesian-language works addressed to broad readerships, while Arabic-language exegetical works produced by contemporary pesantren scholars have received more limited scholarly attention. This article examines Tafsir al-Mu‘taṣam by KH. Zamroji Halim, who wrote under the pen name Abdulhalim al-Halimi Abi Hatim al-Asham. The work is a two-volume Arabic tafsir produced within a pesantren milieu affiliated with the Shāfi‘ī school of law and the Naqshbandī Sufi order. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach and content analysis, this article examines the interpretations of QS. al-Wāqi‘ah [56]: 77–80 and QS. al-Mu’minūn [23]: 2 as two cases representing fiqhī and ṣūfī orientations. The operational criteria are developed from the classical genres of legal exegesis (tafsīr aḥkām) and Sufi exegesis. The findings show that both orientations are present in Tafsir al-Mu‘taṣam, with different methodological weight. The fiqhī orientation appears through a complete argumentative apparatus, including legal reasoning (istinbāṭ), the presentation of juristic disagreement (ikhtilāf), and references to legal school authority. The ṣūfī orientation appears through the technical vocabulary of spiritual states (aḥwāl), without a comparable development of allusive interpretation (ishārah) or unveiling (kashf). These findings position Tafsir al-Mu‘taṣam as a tafsir with a specific fiqhī orientation and a secondary ṣūfī element, rather than a combined orientation in Nashruddin Baidan’s strict typological sense. This pattern reflects an asymmetry in the author’s intellectual formation: jurisprudence was acquired through formal-textual pesantren education, while Sufism was inherited informally through family lineage. The article contributes to the study of knowledge production in contemporary Arabic-language pesantren exegesis by offering a model of internal orientational imbalance that remains underexplored in existing studies of pesantren tafsir.

Abstract

This article examines the editorial negotiation of classical tafsir authority in the Indonesian translation of Tafsir Jalalain published by Ummul Qura in 2018. It focuses on the placement of Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Khumais’s Anwār al-Hilālayn fī al-Taʿaqqubāt ʿalā al-Jalālayn as a prefatory text preceding the main translation. Using Gérard Genette’s concept of paratext, particularly peritext, this article explores how Ummul Qura frames Tafsir Jalalain through a corrective introduction while preserving the translated body of the tafsir. The analysis compares the translation of Jalalain and al-Khumais’s corrections in two selected cases: QS. Ṣād [38]: 75, which concerns the interpretation of divine attributes, and QS. Yūsuf [12]: 52, which concerns the attribution of speech and narrative continuity. The first case shows a theological difference between Jalalain’s taʾwīl and al-Khumais’s salafi-ātharī-oriented correction. The second case reveals a narrative difference related to waqf and ibtidāʾ, although al-Khumais places it within the discussion of isrāʾīliyyāt. This article argues that Ummul Qura brings Jalalain and al-Khumais into one printed product through a specific editorial arrangement. The translation therefore functions as a publishing practice that negotiates classical authority, corrective theology, and contemporary Indonesian Muslim readership.

Abstract

Secara garis besar, karya Women and Gender in the Qur’an berfokus pada penggambaran perempuan yang disinggung Al-Qur’an untuk menunjukkan sisi kemanusiaan mereka yang penuh rupa.
