JELL (Journal of English Language and Literature) STIBA-IEC Jakarta
Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

This research attempts to analyze Shakespeare language symbols/imagery in King Lear (Tragedy Drama). It is generally agreed that there are always many factors why a playwright is still remembered from a century to next centuries, and among many factors that could make someone always well-known/remembered is his/her language factor beside the theme or the messages s/he wanted to convey, of course. King Lear had succeeded to choose the right rhetoric devices or signs in his period and wonder many people are still amazed / inspired up to now due to his unique and rich language. His symbols / imagery, combined with verse and prose in King Lear can express penetratingly the essence of a thing, emotion or situation in term of another, thus convey the sharpness of one’s own vision and sensitivity one’s reader or spectator, again the imagery / symbol here, are connected aspects or angles of people’s lives, and all are interwoven beautifully, and again it’s the language quality of King Lear that makes the researcher is tempted to observe it.

This research analyzes Lecturer's Imperative Teaching in teaching English to PGSD students at Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang. Aspects analyzed include the form of speech acts and the meaning of speech acts imperative contained in teaching English. This research uses descriptive method. Data collection techniques used in this study is a recording technique. Researchers record conversations conducted between lecturers and students. This research data comes from conversations between lecturers and students of PGSD. The result of the research shows that politeness strategy applied in English language teaching especially in PGSD student of 6th semester English Course at Muhammadiyah University Tangerang is a strategy of politeness of context. The context found is the compassion of imperative speech acts in the form of forcing, inviting, and pleading with the discovery of three of the four functions of language according to Leech (1993: 162), ie competitive, convivial, and collaborative. However, the commonly used language function is the collaborative language function. The success rate of use of imperative speech acts is very effective in teaching English so that learning can be done well.

The objective of the research is to find out students’ needs of English skills in Hotel Management Study Program. As a part of English as Specific Purposes (ESP), English comprehension should play an important role in Hotel Management study Program. This is a descriptive research that used observation, questionaire and interview. The data analysis and interpretation indicates that, 1)speaking skill is the major need of the hotel front officer, because oral communication is the most frequently used skill to communicate with the customers; 2) listening skill is required by students since speaking and listening are interrelated skills. This objective of this research is to add to the students’ knowledge of the Connie’s motivation in committing adultery. In addition, the objectives are to find out the character of Connie, to give evidence and find out the motivation of Connie’s adultery with Mellors then to know the reaction of Clifford to students, teachers and people who want to analyze the Connie’s motivation in committing adultery. This research is a library research. The research was done through reading the novel and other sources related to the motivation of Connie’s adultery. The data was taken from books, dictionary, and internet. The researcher uses qualitative method to analyze the motivation of Connie in committing adultery. The novel tells about Connie as the female protagonist of the novel. At 23, she marries Clifford Chatterley. After a month’s honeymoon, Clifford is sent to war, and returns paralyzed from the waist down and become impotent. After that, he becomes a successful writer. Into the void of Connie's life comes Oliver Mellors, the gamekeeper on Clifford's estate. Connie feels curiously drawn to him. After several meetings him, they meet by chance at a hut in the forest. And they have sex more than twice. This time, Connie begins to adore Mellors. She is proud to believe that she is bearing Mellors’ child. Adultery means he or she physically engages in sexual acts with someone who is not his or her spouse. They commit adultery due to several motivations such as the weaknesses of their partner, chances to meet their paramour that grow them in love. Understanding of the people’s motivation in committing adultery is very important before judging them unpleasantly

This research was held to check out the reliability of the English Summative test for the second grade students of the Senior High School. This Research was held at SMA 3 Tambun Selatan – Bekasi. The writer took 43 students as sample for research. The research instrument is The English Summative test of second semester for second grade students. The English Summative test is tested twice. The methodolgy used by the writer is Test – Retest and after that the writer count the correlation of those tests using formula of Pearson Product Moment. From The research writer found that the English Summative test for the second semester of second grade students in SMA 3 Tambun Selatan Bekasi period 2009 / 2010 is reliable

The aim of this research is to solve the English pronunciation problem. Besides, this research is also to know the effectiveness of using choral drill technique in teaching pronunciation. The research is conducted at SMK Karya Bahana Mandiri Bekasi, in semester two of academic year 2011/2012. Data needed is obtain from direct and indirect observation and collaboration. In the direct observation, the data is from field observation. In the indirect one, the data is from the test result. Meanwhile in collaboration, the collaborator informs teaching and learning process through choral drill technique. Based on the data collected it is found that some students are active in pronunciation practice through choral drill technique. Further, the students have more desire and motivation to improve their pronunciation skill. Looking up the evaluation table, the pronunciation from twenty one students in three cycles can be explained; in the first cycle, there are only three students (15%) who achieve the standard of minimum score. In the second cycle, there are nine students (45%) who achieved the standard minimum score. While in the third cycle, all of them (100%) can achieve the standard minimum score. Furthermore, the writer concludes that the use of choral drill technique can be one of the appropriate approach to teach English pronunciation for the students

Principally, the objective of this research is to find out the result of achievement of student’s speaking skill through the performance of translation and interpreting studies. In view of that, this research constitutes one of teacher’s best endeavors to recognize the attainment of student’s speaking skill as the prerequisite for them to get a highly qualified competency for their carrier in the future. Hence, the objective of education for which the students pursue in the university can be accordingly achieved. The achievement of students speaking skill in the society is very important due to the fact that many kinds of world-class business opportunities need a qualification of competency-based speaking skill. The steps of improving the students speaking skill through translating and interpreting study are namely understanding linguistics, socio linguistics and psycho-linguistics and vocabulary as well.

The Purpose of this study is to get the empirical knowledge of the Role-play technique to improve speaking ability, to know if the role-play effective in teaching speaking, to find the answer if the role is effective to improve English speaking ability. The technique of the research is qualitative. The data from field was done through observation in the classroom. Here the writer directly taught the students and observed students’ activities in speaking class. This study aimed to determine the importance implementation of lesson plan” Mini Plan” to improve the competence of the perspective teacher of English at one of the English schools, IEC in Bekasi. The competence in this study referred to the competence of preparing lesson plan and implementing classroom practice using mini lesson plan . This research conducted on population of 30 teachers and sample of 7 teachers of English clasess in IEC Bekasi. This study was descriptive study. This study tells us the condition before the implementation of submitting mini plan and after that implementation.The result shows that the readyness, professioanalism, achievement of the teachers before teaching, and the students retention in class are increased.

The purposes of this study are to know the kinds of figurative language and the general meaning used in selected lyrics of Justin Timberlake song. This research is designed to identify some figurative language by understanding the general meaning when they are used in the song lyric. The technique of descriptive analysis is used to analyze data of the figurative language used in the lyric of the ‘Mirror’. Based on research findings, the writers found some figurative languages in the Justin Timberlake’s selected song. It can be found that most of figurative languages which are used in lyrics of Justin Timberlake’s selected songs are “symbol, metaphor, personification and simile” that have a great exaggeration used to emphasize a point, used for expression or comic effect.
