Abstract

This paper provides information on the diets of Chitala lopis in Kampar River, Riau Province based on study conducted from Mei 2009 to November 2010. Fish species were obtained from fishers using modified nets, traps, hooks and lines. Specimens were cold with cool box at the point of collection and transported to the laboratory. A total of 176 fish specimens were inspected and their stomach contents were examined. The month-wise collection and experiments were made to exhibit the seasonal variation in food preferences, and feeding habit of the fish. Frequency of occasion and numerical methods were used in this study. Results of denote that C. lopis fed on juvenile fish, shrimp, plant material, insects, worms, benthos, gravel and unidentified organism. The consumption of shrimp tends to increase due to giant featherback’s size, which relates to wider mouth, energy, location (water depth) and gonad development, also there is an increase of shrimp consumption during dry season. In giant featherback, the percentage of consumed shrimps is associated with sex and season, meanwhile the consumption of small fish and plant material is related to fish’s size, sampling station and maturity index. Giant featherback tends to be more selective consuming certain food’s group while growing.

Abstract

One of the sea turtles nesting location in Indonesia that have a positive impact for olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) captivity breeding is National Park Alas Purwo (TNAP) District of Banyuwangi East Java Province. Research was done by observation, interviews and descriptive analysis.

Abstract

Dolphins are one of the most interesting cetacean types included in family Delphinidae or known as the oceanic dolphins from genus Stenella sp. and Tursiops sp. Migration and abundance of dolphins are affected by the presence of food and oceanographic conditions. The purpose of this research is to determine the composition and distribution of dolphins in relation to the water quality parameters. Benefits of this research are expected to provide information on the relationship between distributions of the family Delphinidae cetacean (oceanic dolphins) and oceanographic conditions. The method for this research is descriptive exploratory, with models onboard tracking survey. Field observations were done in November 2015 and period of March-April 2016 outside and inside Savu Sea National Marine Park waters. The sighting of dolphin in November and March-April found as much seven species: bottlenose dolphin, fraser’s dolphin, pantropical spotted dolphin, risso’s dolphin, rough-toothed dolphin, spinner dolphin and stripped dolphin. The highest species distribution noted in the Savu Sea is spinner dolphin, pantropical spotted dolphin, rough-toothed dolphin and frazer’s dolphin. The existence of dolphins in Savu Sea is more related with sea surface temperature than others oceanographic parameters. This condition is suspected due to the influence of sea surface temperature to body temperature of dolphin especially for foraging activities. The habit of dolphin is more active around Sumba Island and Daratan Timor waters while in the evening the animal is usually going to Manggarai and Rote Ndao Islands waters to rest.

Abstract

The identification of fish species is challenging. DNA barcoding provides new perspective in ecology and systematics of fishes. In this study, we assess intraspecific and interspecific genetic divergence among several freshwater fish species from Manna River of Bengkulu Province and Semanka River of Lampung Province, using data from mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The results show that a total of six freshwater fish species identified in this study exhibited high levels of interspecific variation based on 51 analyzed sequences. Almost all species corresponded to a single species, cohesive array of barcode sequences distinct from other species. Based on Kimura Two Parameters (K2P) within species, mean pairwise sequence distances comparisons range from 0.3 to 6.3%, while interspecific comparisons were much higher range between 1.7 to 29.4%, except species Tor macrolepis and Tor putitora showed high levels of genetic similarities and no reciprocal monophyly. Using this method will obviously allow the identification eggs, larvae, fillets and fins of freshwater fish.

Abstract

One of the endeavours to address the shortage of catch per unit effort (CPUE) information from the Indonesian Indian Ocean tuna fishery is the collation of a large amount of catch and effort data collected by Indonesian Fisheries High School students (“FHS data”). This paper attempts to investigate spatial-temporal patterns of catch and effort of the FHS data for the main tuna species caught by the fishery: bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus - BET), yellowfin tuna (T. albacares - YFT), albacore (T. alalunga - ALB) and southern bluefin tuna (T.maccoyii - SBT). Reported sets occurred in the Eastern Indian Ocean, north and south of 20°S. Recorded effort from the FHS data set was concentrated within the only known SBT spawning ground. However, within this data set, SBT were recorded in the lowest catch proportion relative to BET, YFT and ALB. The catch composition data suggested that YFT and ALB were predominantly targeted by the fishery, with ALB and SBT most predominantly recorded south of 20°S, whereas BET and YFT were mostly recorded north of 20°S. Unfortunately, there was no strong information on targeting practices reported by this data set, limiting any attempts to understand the factors that influenced those results. As the sampling predominantly occurred in between July and December, the data are not representative of fishing activities throughout the entire year, and any seasonal patterns from the FHS data set are biased. In addition, the FHS data set is prone to observation error and uncertainty in terms of fish identification and fishing location. Therefore, the FHS data set needs to be interpreted with caution.
