Abstract

The BEAC4ND4 ionophore has been successfully synthesized from p-t-butylcalix[4]arene carboxylic acid. The BEAC4ND4 ionophore was obtained in two steps of the synthesis reaction. The first step is the chlorination reaction of p-t-butylcalix[4]arene carboxylic acid with thionyl chloride in dry benzene solvent. The chlorination reaction product is p-t-butylcalix[4]arene acyl chloride in the form of the light brown viscous liquid with a yield of 78.25% and TLC (SiO2, CH3OH: CH2Cl2 = 1: 1 v/v, Rf = 0.65). The second step is the amidation reaction of ethyl 2-aminoacetate with p-t-butylcalix[4]arene acyl chloride in dry tetrahydrofuran solvent. The product of the amidation reaction is p-t-butylcalix[4]arene ethylesteramide or the BEAC4ND4 ionophore in the form of a white solid with the yield of 75.22%, a melting point of 314-316°C, and TLC (SiO2, CH3OH: CH2Cl2 = 1: 1 v/v, Rf = 0.75).

Abstract

The synthesis of chitosan- CuO nanoparticles was studied. This research’s aims were biosynthesis CuO nanoparticles, synthesis of chitosan-CuO nanoparticles, and used as an antibacterial agent of Shigella dysenteriae. CuO nanoparticles and chitosan-CuO nanoparticles were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. CuO nanoparticle was synthesized by the reaction between leaf extract of sweet star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.) and copper sulfate pentahydrate. Chitosan-CuO nanoparticles were synthesized by a heating method. The suspension of chitosan-CuO nanoparticles was used as an antibacterial agent with a paper disk method. The result showed that the Cu-O group at CuO nanoparticles was detected at a wavenumber of 503, 619, 767, and 821 cm-1. The crystallite size of the CuO nanoparticles was 4.25 nm. Cu-O group bonded at N-H and O-H groups and detected at 3406 cm-1 from the FTIR spectra of chitosan-CuO nanoparticles. The average inhibition zone of chitosan-CuO nanoparticles at concentration 2.500, 5.000, 7.500, and 10.000 ppm to Shigella dysenteriae were 13.57 ± 1.55; 14.90 ± 1.20; 15.97 ± 0.76 and 17.03 ± 1.80 mm, respectively.

Abstract

Biodiesel is a substitute fuel that is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and sustainable. The need for biodiesel continues to increase. Biodiesel is made through the process of transesterification of triglycerides and alcohol. Glycerol is a side-effect of biodiesel products with a capacity of 10% of the total weight of its production. Glycerol is the simplest glyceride compound and has several functions as a primary ingredient in chemical production. Through acetylation, glycerol is converted to a material that has a higher sale value. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are the acetylation approach to achieve the desired product, namely acetyl glycerol esters (mono-, di- and triacetin). However, in the process, the catalyst’s type and characteristics significantly affect the yield and conversion of the product and the deactivation or reusability of the catalyst, which can inhibit the catalyst’s utilization and effectiveness; therefore, it must be studied further. Besides, the parameters that affect the reaction will also be assessed.

Abstract

Methylene blue (MB) is one of the dyes used often by the textile industry. Therefore, MB residual is contained in the textile industry waste. MB can irritate, leading to permanent eye and animal injuries; therefore, the textile industry waste concentration must be degraded before disposed to the environment. MB residual in textile industry waste can be treated with activated carbon adsorption. However, the adsorption method is less effective because the deposition takes a long time. This research aims to make activated carbon composites from banana peels and magnesium ferrite (BPAC/MgFe2O4) using the coprecipitation method to obtain activated carbon with magnetic properties (magnetic adsorbent). The obtained composite was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX), and Surface Area Analyzer. The adsorption performance of methylene blue on composites was evaluated with variations in pH, concentration, contact time, determination of adsorption isotherms, and kinetics of adsorption. XRD analysis results showed the composite has a cubic crystal structure with a crystallite size of 7.69 nm. SEM analysis results show the surface morphology has pores with irregular shapes. EDX analysis results showed that the composition of activated carbon composite was 65.56% carbon, 2.28% Mg, 5.50% Fe, and 26.66% O. The results surface area analysis showed a composite surface area of 88.134 m2/g. Composite adsorption performance showed maximum results at pH 7, variations in concentration at 10 ppm, and contact time 180 minutes with adsorption capability of 99.26%. Determination of the adsorption isotherm follows the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model with a pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics model. The obtained BPAC/MgFe2O4 composite can potentially be a magnetic adsorbent capable of adsorbing methylene blue in an aqueous solution.
