Abstract

Deaf culture is a significant aspect of social and cultural studies, particularly in relation to the Deaf community as a group with unique identities, values, and cultural practices. In the Deaf community, sign language is not only the primary means of communication but also a critical foundation that shapes both individual and collective identities. Mastery of sign language influences how Deaf individuals understand themselves, interact with their surroundings, and strengthen solidarity within their community. This study focuses on the relationship between sign language proficiency and the development of self-identity among Deaf individuals. The research employs a quantitative approach involving 52 respondents from the Deaf community residing in Jakarta and its surrounding areas. Data was collected using a questionnaire designed to measure sign language proficiency and the self-identity of Deaf individuals. The analysis results indicate a significant positive correlation between the two variables, with a Pearson correlation coefficient value of 0.330 (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that improved sign language proficiency is associated with stronger self-identity among Deaf individuals. This research provides valuable insights into the role of sign language proficiency in shaping self-identity, as well as implications for the development of better educational programs and support for Deaf individuals. This research aims to increase public awareness of the value of sign language, not merely as a communication tool but as an essential component of Deaf culture and identity.

Abstract

Abstract

Despite extensive research on parenting styles and student discipline, empirical studies that explicitly examine gender-based differences in this relationship remain limited, particularly at the junior secondary school level in Indonesia. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the relationship between parenting styles and student discipline when viewed from the child’s gender, thereby offering a more nuanced understanding of parental influence in character development. A quantitative correlational design was employed involving 212 ninth-grade students of SMP Al-Ma’soem in the 2025–2026 academic year, consisting of 124 male students and 88 female students. Data were collected using validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaires measuring parenting styles and student discipline. Spearman rank correlation analysis revealed a positive and statistically significant relationship between parenting styles and discipline among male students (ρ = 0.177; p = 0.049), although the strength of the relationship was very low. In contrast, no significant relationship was found among female students (ρ = 0.024; p = 0.826). These findings highlight gender-specific patterns in the association between parenting styles and student discipline, suggesting that parental influence tends to be more salient for male students, while female students’ discipline may be shaped more strongly by internal regulation and broader environmental factors. The study contributes theoretically to guidance and counseling literature by emphasizing the importance of incorporating gender perspectives in parental involvement strategies aimed at fostering student discipline.

Abstract

Early adulthood (ages 18–40) is a period vulnerable to high stress and quarter-life crisis, with the prevalence of emotional mental disorders in Makassar reaching 17.86% (higher than the national average of 9.8%). This study aims to examine the influence of self-esteem and emotion regulation on the tendency of 4F coping mechanisms (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) in early adults with high stress in Makassar City. Using a quantitative approach with a multinomial logistic regression design, the study involved 229 early adult respondents aged 18–40 years who had high stress levels based on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Research instruments consisted of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and the Fight-Flight-Freeze-Fawn Test. Results showed the majority of respondents had moderate self-esteem (40.2%) and moderate emotion regulation (49.3%), with the freeze coping tendency being most dominant (41.9%). Regression analysis revealed emotion regulation had a significant influence on the 4F coping mechanism (p=0.001), while self-esteem was not significant (p=0.648). The combined contribution of both variables was 52.9% (R²=0.529), leaving 47.1% influenced by factors outside the model. The study concludes that emotion regulation ability is a critical factor in determining the tendency towards 4F coping mechanisms in this population, while self-esteem did not show a direct influence. These findings confirm the importance of interventions focused on strengthening emotion regulation to reduce maladaptive responses to high stress in early adults within urban contexts like Makassar

Abstract

This research aims to understand deeply the process of spiritual meaning of inmates through the intervention of counseling based on Islamic rituals, namely prayer and tawassul, in an effort to overcome emotional distress. The initial formulation includes all functions contained in the System Needs Specification (SRS) document, while the final formulation includes all the functions contained in the SRS, but with the addition or change that occurs during the research process. This study used a qualitative approach with the study subjects in the form of female inmates with the initials of the hospital, aged 30 years, widow status, have three children, who underwent a coaching period in the Class IIA Banyuwangi Prison. Data collected through in-depth interviews, observations of worship behavior, and analysis of official documents of Lapas. The results showed that the hospital's emotional distress stemmed from the rejection of her father and brother, which triggered chronic guilt, damage to moral identity, spiritual disturbance, and reliance on external validation. Implementation of prayer and tawassul in counseling is able to create a safe cathartic space, stimulate the shift of locus of control from external to internal-spiritual, as well as form a proactive religious coping mechanism. The practice of prostration in prayer requires controlled emotional release, while tawassul reinforces the hope, sense of acceptance, and confidence in divine help. After a week of consistent practice, the hospital showed significant improvements in emotional stability, self-confidence recovery, changes in self-confidence, and a more mature orientation of life meaning. The findings confirm that spiritual counseling based on Islamic rituals is an effective and contextual approach in the rehabilitation of inmates in Indonesia, as it not only strengthens aspects of religiosity, but also restores holistic and sustainable psychological well-being.

Abstract

This literature review explores the role of father involvement as a psychological resource in shaping the resilience and career confidence of emerging adults. As social and economic changes demand greater adaptability, understanding the father’s contribution to emotional and developmental outcomes becomes increasingly essential. Using a narrative literature review method, this study analyzed 25 empirical and theoretical articles published between 2014 and 2025, selected through keyword searches and snowballing techniques in Google Scholar and Scopus. The findings are organized into three main clusters: (1) father involvement as a psychological resource that enhances emotional regulation, self-confidence, and motivation; (2) resilience as a developmental outcome reflecting the influence of paternal warmth, autonomy support, and consistent engagement; and (3) career confidence as a capability strengthened by fathers’ encouragement and guidance in decision-making and self-belief. Across studies, father involvement emerges as a key determinant of adaptive functioning and emotional well-being, serving as a foundation for self-reliance and personal growth. The review concludes that fathers’ emotional presence and active participation play a transformative role in preparing young adults to navigate life challenges and career transitions. Father involvement, therefore, represents not only a familial relationship but also a form of psychological capital essential for developing resilient and capable future generations.

Abstract

Bullying is a serious problem in educational settings that negatively affects students’ psychological and social well-being. Anti-bullying behavior is influenced by various psychological and social factors, including empathy, school climate, and peer support. This study aimed to analyze the effects of empathy, school climate, and peer support on anti-bullying behavior among public senior high school students in Jeneponto Regency. This study employed a quantitative approach using multiple linear regression analysis. The sample consisted of 109 students selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS. The results showed that empathy had a positive and significant effect on anti-bullying behavior (B = 0.166; t = 2.235; p = 0.028), school climate also had a positive and significant effect (B = 0.206; t = 2.349; p = 0.021), and peer support had a positive and significant effect and was identified as the most dominant predictor (B = 0.641; t = 7.571; p < 0.001). Simultaneously, empathy, school climate, and peer support significantly influenced anti-bullying behavior (F = 176.922; p < 0.001), with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.835, indicating that these variables explained 83.5% of the variance in students’ anti-bullying behavior. These findings indicate that anti-bullying behavior is influenced by the interaction between individual psychological factors and social environmental factors. This study highlights the importance of strengthening empathy, fostering a positive school climate, and enhancing peer support in promoting anti-bullying behavior among students.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between attitudes toward singlehood and psychological well-being among early adult single women. This quantitative correlational study involved 346 unmarried single women aged 25-40 years, who were neither nuns nor bhikkhunis, selected using a snowball sampling technique. Attitudes toward singlehood were measured using the Attitude Toward Singlehood Scale (α = 0.931), while psychological well-being was assessed using the Psychological Well-Being Scale (α = 0.895). The results showed a significant positive relationship between attitudes toward singlehood and autonomy (r = 0.132; p < 0.05), as well as significant negative relationships with personal growth (r = –0.140; p < 0.05) and purpose in life (r = –0.143; p < 0.05). No significant relationships were found with environmental mastery, positive relations with others, or self-acceptance. Overall, these findings indicate that positive attitudes toward singlehood strengthen autonomy but are associated with lower personal growth and a diminished sense of purpose in life.

Abstract

Life skills education plays a crucial role in supporting students' academic achievement, social-emotional well-being, and adaptive capacity from an early age. However, systematic reviews on valid life skills assessment instruments that are developmentally appropriate for elementary school students from a guidance and counseling perspective remain limited. This study aims to systematically examine the trends and directions in the development of life skills assessment instruments for elementary school students from a guidance and counseling perspective. The method employed was a Systematic Literature Review following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were conducted across four major databases namely Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and PsycINFO, covering articles published between 2010 and 2025, yielding a total of 1,020 records. Through a rigorous process of identification, screening, and eligibility assessment, 90 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using thematic synthesis techniques. The findings indicate that life skills assessment instruments for elementary school students primarily measure domains of social-interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, self-management, and problem-solving, while aspects related to career awareness and contextual adaptability receive relatively limited attention. Self-report scales and teacher ratings are the most dominant types of instruments, whereas performance-based and digital assessments are still emerging and remain underutilized. Geographically, instrument development is predominantly concentrated in Global North countries, raising concerns regarding cultural relevance and measurement equity. These findings underscore the importance of developing life skills assessment instruments that are developmentally sensitive, culturally responsive, and aligned with the needs of guidance and counseling services in elementary schools.
