The CMES (Center of Middle Eastern Studies) journal is a distinguished peer-reviewed academic publication dedicated to advancing rigorous scholarly research on Middle Eastern studies. It publishes high-caliber research articles, theoretical studies, and critical reviews that engage with both contemporary and historical issues relevant to the region, employing a multidisciplinary approach. The CMES journal serves as a dynamic intellectual platform for researchers, academics, and practitioners to exchange innovative findings and perspectives, advancing Middle Eastern studies through a multidisciplinary framework grounded in the epistemological foundations of the humanities and social sciences. In the humanities, the journal emphasizes linguistics, literature, and Arab culture, while in the social sciences, it focuses on politics, economics, education, and the social dimensions of Arab societies. CMES encourages scholarly work that engages these disciplines through monodisciplinary inquiry, interdisciplinary synthesis, or transdisciplinary dialogue, fostering conceptual integration and methodological interaction across disciplinary boundaries. Manuscripts submitted to CMES must be pertinent to Middle Eastern studies and demonstrate clear engagement with the epistemic traditions of their respective fields. Submissions are expected to exhibit rigorous methodology, original insights, and significant contributions to regional studies, while appealing to a global academic audience.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the Islamic perspective on moral values in the short story Daulah Al-?Ash?f?r by Tauf?q Al-Chak?m. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The object of this research is the Daulah Al-Ash?f?r short story by Tauf?q Al-Chak?m using Roland Barthes's Semiotic theory. The data used is the text in the form of quotations that show moral values in the Daulah Al-Ash?f?r. Analysis is done by reading, then recording things that show moral values in the Daulah Al-Ash?f?r. Furthermore, collecting secondary data that supports the research. Then analyze the moral values of Daulah Al-Ash?f?r by using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory and proceed with an Islamic perspective on that value. Finally, make a conclusion. The results of the study show that moral values in the short story Daulah Al-Ash?f?r by Tauf?q Al-Chak?m are divided into three, namely (1) religious moral values, (2) social moral values, (3) and individual moral values. All three moral values are in accordance with Islamic teachings, there is human relations with God, human relations with others, and human relations with yourself.

Abstract

This research tries to discover and reveal the transformation works from “Alfu Lailah wa Lailah”. The purpose of the discovery and disclosure of the works of transformation is to know the reader's attitude to the work "Alfu Lailah wa Lailah". The theory used in this research is intertextual theory with descriptive qualitative research method. The results show that the work "Alfu Lailah wa Lailah" has inspired writers, musicians, and choreographers, and literary enthusiasts to give birth to other similar works. The work of transformation in the form of prose found a number of 12 manuscripts, in the form of music of a number of 2 works, in the form of choreography of ballet 1, and in the form of film and animated film totaling 3 film.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the positive and negative sides of the applied Arabic learning media in Indonesia. The State University of Malang (UM) was chosen as a sample learning model since it has been a well-known university for the Arabic language and has considerable attention to Arabic language issues in Indonesia. This study was designed with quantitative and evaluative methods in the data display and analysis of this study. The researcher collected the research data by distributing questionnaires to both lecturers and students of the State University of Malang with regard to the learning media used, then the researchers evaluated the Arabic learning facilities with the Arabic learning communication approach to non-Arabic and applied the quantitative evaluative method. The results of the analysis concluded that the use of Arabic learning media at the UM Malang reflects both positive and negative sides.

Abstract

The time duration is one of the important acoustic features discussed among the researchers. This article presents the results of a study of variation and duration of madd (long vowel). The data were obtained by downloading of two Quran reciterswho are Muammar Zainal Asyiqin and Maria Ulfahfrom the website.To investigate the duration of the types of madd, it uses an acoustic phonetics approach andto measure the acoustic duration of these madd, it employs the computer program ‘Praat’.Among the most important results, it is noted that Maria has the longer duration than Muammar does. Furthermore, the investigation of madd duration is addressed well, followed by the analysis for each madd.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the commands and prohibitions of the prophet Muhammad in hadits by using Searle's speech act theory. The purpose of this study focused to describe the commands and prohibitions of the prophet Muhammad in seen from sentence mode. Results of this study indicate that there are several characteristics of the use of the phrase mode commands and prohibitions of the Prophet Muhammad such us declarative sentences mode with verb sentence form and noun sentence form; Imperative sentences mode with fi‘lul-amri form, ismu fi‘lil-amri form, dan la an-nahiyah form; and the interrogative sentences mode with using “َ ”أand “.”

Abstract

This study discusses the imperative speech acts markers and their functions in a drama entitled a’s-Sulthān al-Chāˈir a work by Taufiq Al-Chakim. This study aimed at identifying the imperative speech acts markers and explaining the functions of those imperative speech acts in a’s-Sulthān al-Chāˈir drama. This study is a typical qualitative research. The method of data collection in this study used the attentive observation method followed by the basic tapping and advanced note-taking techniques. The data in this study are clauses or sentences which realize the imperative speech acts. The method applied in analyzing the data is the distributional method which technically followed by the technique of direct elements and the pragmatic equivalent method. Having analyzed 208 data which constitute of 220 sentences, the results are as follow: (1) the imperative speech acts in a’s-Sulthān al-Chāˈir drama a work by Taufiq Al-Chakim were realized in standard and non-standard markers, with more standard markers than non-standard markers. The standard markers were realized by the fi’l al-amr marker as many as 186 words, ism fi’l al-amr as many as 41 words (typical repetition), mashdar which represents fi’l al-amr as many as 25 words, and fi’l al-mudhāri’ which are attached to the particle lām al-amr as many as 16 words. The non-standard markers are realized with declarative sentences or kalām al-khabar as many as 7 sentences and the interrogative sentences or istifhām as many as 4 sentences. (2) the imperative speech acts in a’s-Sulthān al-Chāˈir drama a work by Taufiq Al-Chakim has various functions among others for commanding as many as 100 sentences, inviting or offering were found as many as 60 sentences, requesting as many as 34 sentences, advising as many as 14 sentences, threatening of 7 sentences, weakening as many as 2 sentences, allowing as many as 2 sentences, and giving a choice was found 1 sentence.

Abstract

This study was intended to describe the functions and instruments of music during the Abbasid Dynasty and to describe music therapy according to Al-Farabi. The research method used is the descriptive qualitative method, where the data were technically collected using the library technique, then the data were analyzed based on the formulated problem, following after it describes the analysis results in the form of a written report. The data sources are the reference books related to Al-Farabi. The data of this study used Mūsīq Al-Kabīr, books, theses, journals related to the research. Based on this research, it can be concluded that the art of music began to develop rapidly during the Abbasid caliphate, and music can be used as a therapy for the soul, spiritual, and psychosomatic.

Abstract

The novel of Islamic history by Jurjī Zaidān is one of the works of Modern Arabic literature which appeared at the end of the 19th century. Since it was first published, as a serial story in al-Hilal magazine, this novel has been read and has received a great response. Zaidān composed 22 titles of novels from 1891 to 1914. After Zaidān's death in 1914, his novels were still read by the public, reprinted, and even translated in various languages in the world. Zaidān’s Islamic historical novels still exist, both within the scope of modern Arabic literature and in Arabic thought, with many studies to date. Research on this novel is reviewed and analyzed to reveal the diversity of perspectives to be mapped. Found nine perspectives in the study of Islamic historical novels; the perspective of the development of Arabic novel genres, the perspective of authorship and pioneering in Arabic novel genre, the perspective of the popularization of Arab-Islamic history, critical perspectives of Islamic historical facts, intrinsic literary criticism perspective, narrative structure perspective, feminist perspective, perspective modern Arab identity, and Arab nationalism perspective. The mapping of studies become the positioning of further Islamic historical novel studies, and at the same time can be a model of study for the analysis of other historical novels that develop in Arabic literature or other national literature.
