Abstract

This paper aims to describe linguistic phenomena in Arabic as seen from general linguistic theories. Based on the universal nature of language, the unique of a language system can be analyzed using external approaches outside of it. By this comparative method, novelty can be found frequently and encourage the development of a theory. The method used is descriptive and comparative. Descriptive methods are used to describe general linguistic theories. The comparative method is used to find the similarities of the two linguistic systems, especially at the syntactic and morphological levels. Several conclusions were drawn. First, at the syntactic level, Arabic has a system that is not much different from the system in general linguistics. Several syntactic theories in general linguistics such as transitivity theory, X-Bar Theory, Theta Theory and Case Theory can be found in Arabic equivalent. Second, in its morphological system, Arabic also has the same word formation processes such as Affixation, Acronym, Conversion, Back Formation, Clipping, Blending, Compounding, Borrowing, and Coinage.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the complementary structure of Arabic in Al-Jurumiyyah book. A complement is a complementary form in a sentence which holds a function and role as an adverb (adverb function). This study was designed with a qualitative descriptive research model. The data collection method uses the observation method with note-taking technique. Researchers recorded examples of sentences containing complements. Furthermore, data analysis was carried out using distributional method (agih method), in which the researcher examined aspects of language without paying attention to the context of its use. The technique used in data analysis is Bagi Unsur Langsung (BUL) or ‘Immediate Constituent Analysis’ technique by paying attention to the lingual element which is the complement category in Arabic. Furthermore, the researcher used markah (bookmark) reading technique to determine the constituents of complementary fillers in Arabic. The results showed that in Al-Jurumiyyah book there was a complete discussion of the complement structure, namely genetic complement, accusative complement, and dependent complement. Accusative complement includes maf’ûl-muthlaq, maf’ûl li ajlih atau maf’ûl lahu, maf’ûl fîh, maf’ûl ma’ah, a’t-tamyîz, al-châl, al-ististnâ’. Genitive complement in Arabic is represented by a word that is preceded by charf jar particle preposition or in idhâfah form.

Abstract

Carnivalesque or carnival behavior is a concept coined by Mikhail Bakhtin about the suspension of all forms of social rules and hierarchies in literature. This is reflected in an Egyptian short story Asy-Syahiid written by Taufiq al-Chakim (1898-1987). The short story tells of a demonic character who wants to repent of his attitudes known as a human tempter. The satanic narrative described as contradicting the understanding of divine religion shows that al-Hakim tries to present the carnivalesque aspect in his work. This study will analyze the carnivalesque elements in the short story and the ideology behind the carnivalesque depictions. The method used is descriptive analysis method, namely by first describing the carnivalesque elements in the short story, then analyzing the ideology behind the depiction of these elements. The results showed that the short story Asy-Syahiid represented carnivalesque elements, such as profanation, comical elements, and multiplicity of tones. The ideology shown by the short story is a form of al-Hakim's criticism of humanity categorized by the devil's repentant narrative.
