Abstract

This study aimed to assess speaking ability of the vocational school EFL students. The study involved 108 students of the Accounting Department at a vocational school in the suburban area of Banyumas Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. In this study, convenience sampling was used. The data were collected using document of student speaking scores elicited from transactional speaking formative assessments.  The scores of students’ speaking competence in the test were classified to determine their level of competence.The data were analysed using the descriptive statistic and visualized in charts. Therefore, the average, percentage and frequency distribution of the students’ scores were obtained. The results have shown that students’ speaking ability of 67 students or 62% reached an average of 83.61, falling to category “Good”. In addition, there were 6 students or 5,6% who could achieve very good level. Then, there were 34 students or 31,5% who could reach average level. In other words, the technique implemented in the speaking assessment showed good result.  With regard to the finding, it was recommended that it should be good motivation and challenge for the English teachers to encourage the students to be more confident in speaking English and provide them with more opportunity to practise extensively outside the classroom.

Abstract

Learning theory is a very fundamental, systematic and comprehensive understanding of the process of how people particularly students, learn. Learning theory is much influenced by psychological theories. One of them is behaviorism theory. This theory believes that learning is a change in a person's behavior and that behavior can be observable and measured.  This article aims to discuss the key concept in behaviorism, important figures in behaviorism, and how it is implemented in learning activity in the classroom. There are four concepts of behaviorism theory that are formulated by different psychologists; connectionism, classical conditioning, contiguous conditioning and operant conditioning.  Every concept has different perspective on how the process of behavior change as a result of learning. However, in their implementation of activities, they have the same focus on learning activities; stimulus and response. The discussion of this paper starts with the key concept of behaviorism from different experts. Then, followed by how behaviorism implemented in the learning which can be in the form of teaching activities and assessment. Learning activities that may be the implementation of behavioristic theory include learning using PowerPoint and multimedia, or evaluation of learning that requires true and false answers /yes or no question. This paper is expected to give a clear insight for educators in understanding and implementing behaviorism as psychological theory of learning.

Abstract

In the amid of Covid-19 pandemic, almost all schools and other educational platforms are forced to switch the conventional learning into an online learning system. Based on several previous studies, it is found that students’ low participation is one of the major problems experienced by teachers and lecturers. In line with that, this article aims to modify traditional station rotation model into a virtual model in order to fulfill teachers’ need to accommodate and increase student participation in online learning. This article starts with an evaluation of previous research that discusses the concept and procedures to implement the traditional station rotation model in learning. The discussion leads to the potential of modifying the traditional station rotation model into the virtual model. The implementation of the virtual station rotation model in this article will emphasize the possibility of applying this model to increase student participation in online learning which is currently being carried out by almost all schools. The results of the research reviews discussed in this article show the great possibility of applying this model to online learning in order to increase student participation. Furthermore, this research can be used as a reference in applying and developing this learning model both in the implementation of classroom teaching and further research.

Abstract

The objects of this study are Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and Sapphire’s Push. This study is trying to unveil the interxtuality between the two works of literature above in order to trace back Sapphire’s attempt of celebrating Womanism in Black American women literature through intertextuality. This study focuses on how Alice Walker’s idea of Womanism in The Color Purple influences Sapphire to write a novel with a similar topic of discussion under the umbrella of Womanism. Womanism  is quite essential to the Black American women empowerment. Womanism can be seen as a weapon for the black women to fight back the partriarchal society. Supported by citations and quotations in both novel, this study tries to uncover how similar these novel are when working on the isssue of Womanism undergone by Black American women. Both Sapphire and Walker highlight the value of literacy and/or education for the Black American women as a way out of the repressive and dominating society. They both also concern about Black women supporting other Black women in both of the novels. Living in an unfortunate world where they were placed them at the bottom of social ladder, both of the main characters of the novel need the support from other Black Women in order to survive. The similarity of the theme of the novels and also several mentions of Alice Walker’s work of literature in Push manifested the Sapphire’s celebration of womanism through interxtuality in her novel.

Abstract

In the EFL context, an error analysis is a paramount study. This type of research might bring many advantages to the success of the teaching and learning process itself. This study investigates the types and causes of student errors in writing a narrative text. Furthermore, this research provides several suggestions for decreasing the occurrence of the errors. The research method employed was descriptive qualitative, and the researchers completed this study through several phases called data gathering, data analysis, and data presentation. The data analysis reveals several significant findings. First, there are six types of errors that emerged called the use of tenses, the use of articles, the use of relative pronouns, mistyping, confusing words, and agreement of singular/plural nouns. Second, the interlingual transfer is the most significant factor causing errors. Third, decreasing the errors might be done by paying more attention to global errors, the errors with high frequency, the most influential error type, and the most problematic topic. In this present study, the kind of error requiring more attention is English tenses, and one of the suggested solutions for teaching tenses well is using attractive teaching media such as English songs. Applying effective ways of teaching is an alternative to reduce student errors.

Abstract
