Abstract

This research explores the social transformation occurring within the Majelis Ratib al-‘Attas Habib Muhammad al-Habsyi Gresik. This research focuses on three aspects: the concept and nature of egalitarianism applied in the assembly to all its members, the social impact of the assembly on the lives of its members, and the existence of the assembly in the flow of changes in social life. This research uses a phenomenological approach with Moustakas' (1994) phenomenological data analysis, namely Bracketing, Reduction, Clustering, and Validation (confirming the theme through data triangulation). The researcher used a questionnaire with 50 randomly selected respondents, all of whom were council members, and conducted ethnographic interviews based on the James P. Spradley model. Primary sources are one of the strengths of this research. The research results show that this assembly is agreed upon by the majority of respondents as an assembly that highly emphasizes the principle of equality. (egaliterisme). Respondents also gave a high score to the assembly's ability to change the social lives of its members. Meanwhile, regarding the existence of the assembly, respondents still believe that the Ras assembly is capable of enduring the social changes occurring within the community. Thus, this study is expected to become a comprehensive repository on the philanthropy of a congregation that dares to take unpopular steps amidst other more established congregations.

Abstract

Disasters are events that endanger and disrupt community life. Mitigation is an effort to reduce disaster risk through structural and non-structural approaches. Jember Regency, East Java, has a fairly high potential for flood disasters, especially in the Kalijompo watershed area. The Kalijompo Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (F-PRB Kapo) is a disaster-aware community that plays a role in flood management in the region. The multidimensional characteristics of flood disasters encompassing infrastructure, policy, and natural resource management require a collaborative approach from various stakeholders. The research entitled "Social Capital in Structural Flood Mitigation: A Case Study of the Disaster Risk Reduction Forum in the Kalijompo Watershed" aims to identify, describe, and analyze the social capital of F-PRB Kapo in structural flood disaster mitigation programs. The research method uses a qualitative approach with case studies, purposive informant selection, and data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data validity is ensured through triangulation, while data analysis is conducted through reduction, presentation, and verification. Using Robert D. Putnam's social capital theory with the concepts of trust, social norms, and social networks, this research found that social capital is very important in disaster mitigation by F-PRB Kapo. The continuity of these three elements creates an integrated system that transforms social relationships into effective physical disaster prevention infrastructure

Abstract

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has triggered a strong social response in Indonesia, one of which is through a movement to boycott products affiliated with Israel. The emergence of the Julid Fisabilillah community on Telegram social media is a concrete representation of the transformation of social movements from the physical to the digital realm. This study aims to analyze various factors influencing consumers' decisions to boycott Israeli products, with a focus on the Julid Fisabilillah community on Telegram social media. (Method) This study used a qualitative, analytical descriptive approach with a purposive sampling method. Data were obtained through interviews and documentation from key, primary, and additional informants who were actively involved in the community. The results show that internal factors such as religious values, empathy, and product knowledge, as well as external factors such as social media, framing (community calls), and the influence of public figures, significantly influence the decision to boycott. This study concludes that social media plays an active role in shaping digital collective consciousness, and grassroots movements such as Julid Fisabilillah are able to influence value-based consumption behavior. The implication is that online social movements can be an effective means of building social solidarity and encouraging social change based on ethical values and the dissemination of information

Abstract

This study analyzes the views of four contemporary Indonesian preachers, that is Hanan Attaki, Buya Yahya, Gus Baha, and Ustadz Abdul Somad regarding the practice of Weton calculation and parental blessing in marital decision-making as presented on TikTok. Using a qualitative approach through content analysis and virtual ethnography, the research examined four TikTok sermons (10-15 minutes each) uploaded between January 2023 and December 2024, along with audience interactions in the comment sections. The findings reveal that all preachers reject Weton as a determinant of marriage compatibility because it contradicts Islamic monotheism, yet they differ in their preaching approaches: Hanan Attaki and Gus Baha emphasize rational faith, Buya Yahya adopts a moderate stance that tolerates cultural expressions, while Ustadz Abdul Somad firmly condemns superstition. The study shows that TikTok serves as a space for negotiating religious and cultural values, with Buya Yahya's moderate approach being the most accepted. This research contributes to contemporary digital da'wah studies by highlighting the emergence of new religious authority within Indonesia's digital landscape.

Abstract

This research focuses on uncovering Anthony Giddens' duality of structure process in the religious practices of children in interfaith families, specifically how the dialectical interaction between child agency and religious structure reproduces or transforms those practices. The study utilizes a qualitative approach with Alfred Schutz's phenomenology design to capture subjective meaning, which is then theoretically analyzed using Anthony Giddens' Structuration Theory to understand the dialectical interaction between the parents' religious structure and the children's agency. Findings indicate that the family's religious structure is asymmetrical, dominated by the Mother (Islam) through resource control and dual legitimation (theological-pragmatic), which is reinforced by the Father's (Buddhist) strategic withdrawal. The children, as shrewd agents, realize their practices in the form of "distant obedience"; they use discursive consciousness to prioritize relational harmony, while practical consciousness reproduces the structure through ritual routinization. Simultaneously, this practice reproduces the dominant ritual structure, but also transforms the family's signification, shifting the meaning of religion from exclusive dogma toward universal ethics and tolerance, which is key to family resilience.

Abstract

This study explores the socio-religious phenomenon of kyai (Islamic clerics) in Kenjo Village, Banyuwangi, who uphold the values of sincerity and reject both the commercialization of religion and feudal religious structures. In the context of modern society, religion is often used as an economic instrument or a symbol of social status. However, the kyai in Kenjo demonstrate a form of value rationality as proposed by Max Weber social actions driven by moral and spiritual beliefs rather than material gain. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and literature review. The findings reveal that kyai in Kenjo carry out their religious duties with simplicity, refusing financial rewards as a moral expression of sincerity. They also resist hierarchical religious relations by fostering egalitarian interactions with the community. Such behavior reflects the manifestation of religion as a lived social practice rather than merely a normative belief system. Hence, the role of kyai in Kenjo can be interpreted as a form of resistance against the commodification of religion and symbolic domination, embodying social actions oriented toward moral and spiritual values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social adaptation of conventional bentor drivers at the Citimall terminal, Heledulaa Selatan Village, Gorontalo City, in facing competition with Maxim online transportation. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, using data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, with informants selected purposively from conventional bentor drivers who are actively operating in the terminal area. The results indicate three forms of social adaptation undertaken by bentor drivers: active adaptation, including seeking passengers by patrolling, reducing fares, maintaining relationships with regular customers, and utilizing social media; passive adaptation, demonstrated by remaining at the terminal without innovating despite a decline in passengers; and integrative adaptation, manifested through mutual agreements with online transportation drivers regarding operational area restrictions and the implementation of a queuing system at the terminal to maintain social harmony. These findings highlight the importance of adaptation strategies for traditional drivers to sustain their livelihoods while fostering social harmony amid the competition with modern transportation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pesantren-based women's empowerment model at the Sunan Gunung Jati Ba'alawy Islamic Boarding School and examine the strategic role of Ibu Nyai as a central figure in building the spiritual, intellectual, and social independence of female students. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method, through data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The results show that women's empowerment in this Islamic boarding school is implemented through four main pillars, namely: (1) spiritual empowerment through the Al-Qur'an memorization program, which fosters discipline and religious character; (2) intellectual empowerment through the study of classical Islamic texts, which trains critical thinking and reasoning; (3) socio-cultural empowerment through the Maulid Nabi tradition, which builds solidarity and collective leadership; and (4) leadership empowerment through the example set by Ibu Nyai, who combines charismatic, economic, and social responsibility values. This model reflects an alternative form of empowerment based on Islamic values and Islamic boarding school wisdom that is adaptive to the challenges of the times. Pesantren not only serve as religious educational institutions, but also as spaces for social transformation that prepare women to be empowered, independent, Islamic in character, and ready to contribute to sustainable community development.
