Abstract

Stunting remains a national public health priority in Indonesia, including in the working area of the Pauh Community Health Center, Padang City. Based on the 2024 report, 149 toddlers were identified as stunted, with the highest prevalence in Pisang Village (30 cases). Contributing factors include suboptimal parenting practices, limited maternal knowledge of child nutrition, and economic constraints. This community service aimed to improve mothers’ knowledge of stunting prevention, strengthen the role of Posyandu cadres, and promote sustainable education through community-based digital media. The program was implemented through three main activities is face-to-face education for mothers of toddlers at three Posyandu (Parak Alah, Seberang Air, and Koto Parak); the “Friends of Posyandu Cadres” program to enhance cadres’ skills in growth monitoring and recording; and the establishment of a “Let’s Prevent Stunting” WhatsApp group as a platform for continuous communication and education. The results showed increased knowledge and awareness among mothers regarding balanced nutrition and appropriate parenting practices, with 85–90% of participants demonstrating improved post-test scores. Cadres also showed better skills in implementing the five steps of Posyandu. Additionally, the digital platform functioned effectively as a follow-up educational tool. These findings indicate that the program contributes to strengthening community-based primary health services and supports more comprehensive and sustainable stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major infectious disease in Indonesia. Data from the Ampalu Community Health Center in 2023 showed 93.5% service coverage for suspected TB patients (430 people), with 26 confirmed cases. However, from January to August 2024, only 33.3% of the screening target (66.7%) was achieved, revealing a gap in early detection and the need to enhance community participation. The TB Friend Action program was developed as a community-based intervention integrating education, case screening, and health information dissemination to improve knowledge, reduce stigma, and strengthen community involvement in TB control. The activity was implemented in September 2024 in Korong Palak Juha, Ampalu District, Padang Pariaman Regency, involving 48 participants from local communities and at-risk families, supported by cadres, community leaders, and community health center staff. The intervention comprised three components: interactive outreach using lectures and the Emo-demo method, sputum collection for case screening, and the distribution of educational media (leaflets, posters, banners, and x-banners). Evaluation through pre- and post-tests, observation, and screening analysis showed a significant improvement in knowledge, with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielding Z = -5.98 and p < 0.001 (pre-test 57.52 ± 14.57; post-test 68.10 ± 9.21). High community engagement was evident from active participation and the collection of 26 sputum samples for laboratory testing. The TB Friend Action effectively enhanced community understanding, reduced stigma, and fostered collaboration between communities and health workers. Integration with routine health center programs and regional policy support is recommended to ensure sustainable TB prevention and control.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) remain a major global health challenge, including in Indonesia. Healthy and balanced diet is one of the key strategies to prevent NCDs. Nutrition literacy, defined as the ability to understand and apply nutritional information in daily life, includes the skill of interpreting nutrition facts labels on packaged foods. The skill to read and use nutrition facts labels is associated with healthier eating patterns and improved food choices. This community service program aimed to enhance mothers’ knowledge of nutrition facts labels and to encourage the practical application of this knowledge by choosing healthier food products based on the nutrition labels provided. The activity was conducted at Puskesmas Ulu Gadut on October 17, 2025, involving 30 participating mothers, since mothers usually are the ones who are responsible for deciding the consumption of the household. s. The intervention includes preparation, implementation, and evaluation phases. Activities consisted of health education sessions, discussion, and distribution of leaflets and posters about how to read nutrition facts labels. At the evaluation phase, participants were asked to compare two similar food products and choose which one is healthier based on their nutrition contents showed on the nutrition labels. From all the products given, all participants could choose correctly and explain the reasons for their choice. The activity proved effective in increasing awareness of reading nutrition labels to make healthier food decisions. It is recommended that this program could be applied to other age groups and further developed media for a more sustainable impact.

Abstract

Maternal mortality and stunting remain major public health challenges in Indonesia, largely due to limited early detection of pregnancy complications and low maternal health literacy during the First 1000 Days of Life. Strengthening maternal knowledge through structured education is essential to improve pregnancy outcomes. This community service program aimed to enhance pregnant women’s knowledge of pregnancy danger signs, completion of six antenatal care (ANC) visits, anemia prevention, balanced nutrition, and early stunting prevention. A community-based participatory approach using a service-learning model was implemented among 39 pregnant women at Pauh Primary Health Center, Padang. Educational activities were conducted through interactive lectures, group discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. Knowledge was assessed using pre-test and post-test instruments and analyzed with a paired t-test. The results showed a significant increase in mean knowledge scores from 77.98 ± 16.26 to 86.60 ± 11.18 (p = 0.0002). The proportion of participants with “good” knowledge increased from 66.6% to 76.6%, while those with “poor” knowledge decreased substantially. These findings indicate that interactive and structured maternal health education effectively improves understanding of pregnancy complications and stunting prevention. Continuous implementation through routine maternal classes and stronger family involvement is recommended to sustain behavioral changes and improve maternal and child health outcomes.

Abstract

Nutrition problems among primary school children remain an important public health concern, as they affect growth, learning concentration, and academic performance. Limited understanding of balanced nutrition and inadequate implementation of healthy school food services continue to be challenges in many educational institutions. This community engagement program aimed to improve students’ and teachers’ knowledge of balanced nutrition and to strengthen school food service implementation. Educational sessions were delivered to 59 fifth-grade students through interactive lectures and leaflets covering principles of balanced nutrition, the “Isi Piringku” concept, and food waste reduction. A module was also provided for teachers and the managing foundation to support the implementation and sustainability of the school food service program. Knowledge change was evaluated using pretest–posttest questionnaires. In addition, a qualitative assessment of the school food service implementation was conducted through discussions with teachers and school administrators to identify strengths and areas for improvement. The results indicated a 30% average increase in students’ knowledge about balanced nutrition, accompanied by improvements in their attitudes toward healthy eating practices. The program also enhanced teachers’ awareness of the importance of menu diversity and adherence to nutrition standards for school-aged children. The school principal also expressed commitment to communicating and following up on the recommendations with the foundation. This program contributed to strengthening nutrition literacy and improving the school food service system. The provision of a school food service module and educational materials is expected to support the sustainability of healthy school initiatives at SD Islam Budi Mulia Padang.
