Abstract

Great nation is a nation that has good character. Being a nation with a good character is the desire of all of us. However, the social situation in our society increasingly alarming. The destruction of moral values​​, the spread of injustice, the proliferation of corruption cases, the erosion of a sense of solidarity, have occurred in our education. Therefore, character education should be encouraged in the Indonesian language learning in schools. Language politeness is identical to the behavior of the character. Polite speech reflects the character's behavior, i.e. behavior that is polite, moral, personality. Abstract

Impolitenes is a kind of attitude that is regarded breaking the rule and the norm in social life. In communication, impoliteness is really avoided since this may threaten one’s face and bring about the miscommunication. Once miscommunication occurs, the disharmonity may come up. Thus, being impolite must be denied. However, impoliteness sometimes can not be prevented in communication, specifically when it is done via short message service (SMS). This writing is aimed at describing the phenomena of being impolite in communication via SMS. The objective of the writing is identify the motivation of being impolite in communication via SMS. The data are any SMS sent by English Department Students Andalas University to some lecturers. The data are collected by observational method and anlyzed by pragmatic and referential identity method. The result of analysis is presented narratively and descriptively. Having related  to the concept of impolitness proposed by Culpeper (1995) and Oktavianus and Revita (2013), it is found that there are several motivations bringing about the students being impolite in communication via SMS. Abstract

Culture shows tribes. This is no exception when we want to understand the Malay tribes residing in southern Thailand. Malay Muslim minority community which is very strong in practicing Malay culture in their daily lives. Unfortunately, this picture is not recorded in the form of architecture such as in the western countries, an idea of ​​the character of its people can be seen from several posts have ever been recorded in the form of literary works short stories and poems. This literary work is also not growing as expected because there are some obstacles. Some of these literature ever recorded in a magazine published in the 1970s and in the years 1980-1990 rhyme anthology's. Both materials are about character recorded Pattani Malay community as a source of reference in this study. It is because, literary works can be used as social documents to determine the character of a nation. This document will be analyzed by using sociology of literature, such as social background and the background of the community to know the character of the Pattani Malay community. Abstract

Nowadays, some behavioral problems like cheating in schools, bullying, pervasive youth violence and other problems are well documented. These misbehaviors have made the needs of character building among students are obviously required in any level of education. It is therefore important for teachers to instill their students with noble characters like honesty, cooperative, responsibility, discipline, creativity, and so forth. These characters can be built through writing activities. Hence descriptive text and the activities of writing processes can be an alternative way to engrave their noble characters. This paper attempts to describe character education, character and good characters; explores on kinds of good characters that can be implied in writing descriptive text; and how descriptive text can build students’ good character. Abstract

This paper discusses the various Minangkabau expressions in the procession of planting the rice in Nagari Biaro Gadang, Kecamatan IV Angkat Candung, Kabupaten Agam, West Sumatra. The expressions are studied from ecolinguistics perspective. This article is funded by Dikti grant.  Based on ecology point of view, language is seen as a subsystem that has close relation with other subsystems. The change of subsystem causing changing of language used. One of the causes is the extinction of a number of phrases and lexicon in agricultural processing in Minangkabau society. The phenomena of the change is caused by the influence of globalization. The extinction of a number of the lexicons will also be followed by the extinction of a number of cultural assets and cultural values related to the cultural identity and village’s characters.  The aspect of cultural identity are essential in sustaining the character of national character.   Keywords: term of agricultural procession, Minangkabau, character of nation

Abstract

  Problematic utilization of words and terms in Indonesian language is various and complex. One of them can be identified as utilization of numeral classifiers in trading activity, especially at modern market. Most of numeral classifier words that are used in that situation do not come from Indonesian language, they are derived from foreign languages, especially English. Meanwhile Indonesian language has much varied words and terms in the numeral classifier. As a result, there are number of words in Indonesian numeral classifier that begin to disappear or are not used anymore. As the national language and the language of the country, it is obligation to Indonesian to maintained, nurtured, and developed it. Maintaining the Indonesian language is necessary in order to maintaining the national identity of Indonesia. In other hands, nurturing Indonesian language is very important to straighten the standardized Indonesian language. Whereas in the context of development, Indonesian language must be developed by referring to the word or term that already existed in Indonesia rather than form other languages. Based on these three aspects, it can be clearly seen that Indonesian language as National Identity of Indonesia, especially in utilization of numeral classifier words in trading activities at modern market, has not functioned appropriately. Therefore, utilization of numeral classifier words at the modern market must follow the Indonesian language guidance to strengthen Indonesian National Identity and to avoid the existing numeral classifiers of Indonesian language from becoming archaic words.   Keyword: archaic, identity, trading, numeral classifier words, modern market

Abstract

Studies on civic education learning materials about, especially the topics which are related to the rights and obligations of citizens, democracy, human rights, national identity, and national perception is very strong with the values of the Minangkabau culture imbued by the teachings of Islam which pretty much contains the values of the nation's character. Course material covering the fields of: Introduction to Civic education, National Identity, and the State Constitution, State Relations and citizens, Democracy, Rule of Law and Human Rights association, National Insights as geopolitical Indonesia, National Defence of Indonesia, National Integration, and National Strategy in state affair, including how to overcome development issues at the local, national, regional, and international level, contained a variety of Minangkabau traditional value as a contributor to educational values of the nation's character. That is what needs to be understood, and further explored, and to be finally implemented and communicated to the students in the learning process. Thus, the lecturers of civic education may play a role in planting values education on local based. The method used is a qualitative descriptive study. The objects are the 100 students who take the citizenship course as the general course at State University of Padang (UNP) during the semester of January- June 2014. The purposes of the study are: (1) to describe the values of traditional Minangkabau in strengthening civic education, (2) to find the Minangkabau traditional values tendency ​​in shaping the national character of the student based on the students’point of view.   Keywords: character education, Minangkabau, Citizenship learning, and student

Abstract

Character is the absolutely of characteristic that human having. It is original and rooted in human personality. It can be better with knowledge and human understanding of kindness, desire to do goodness, and do good thing. The understanding of moral’s concept, moral’s attitude, and moral’s behavior are also involved. The understanding of them can be grown throw formal and informal of education, and also reading form. Entertaining reading form and has humanist value is a good way to support the learning of the good characteristic.  In new modern Indonesian language context has happening moral’s critical that is shown by the increasing of deviant behavior, the rate of violence, crime, and widespread of pornography network. Because of that the Indonesian character development for young people especially is needed to be encouraged. To realize that purpose, literature is an alternative reading way which can be used. Literature, especially prose has usefulness aspect and entertaining that can persuade readers to learn characters values. In Indonesia’s literature Minangkabau’s Local Color especially, for example, can be learned some character values related to culture and Minangkabau custom. This paper has purpose to description some character of values that contain in Indonesia’s literature minangkabau’s local color, especially in Aa Navis’s short stories. Abstract

To learn a foreign language is to learn that there are other ways of using language than those that we are used to. This can be a shock for people learning a second language for the first time. This teaches students that there are other ways of organising a language and other ways of constructing meaning than those that they were brought up with. As well as providing knowledge about the new language, it teaches learners to see their own first language in a new light. This provides a greater maturity about the state of the world, and about one’s own first language. Whatever the method of language education, this should always apply.

Abstract

This paper aims at discussing, values and characters in translation process that must be taught to the students in order to produce good translation. In the translation process, translators face various problems whether untranslatability issues, culture, and ideology. To resolve these problems translators are required to have the competence and intelligence of selecting the best strategy. To that end, in teaching translation skill, the students are trained to not easily give up, choosing a good diction, and the best way to convey the message contained in the target language. Translators are required to be honest but should not be too honest/plain. Translators must not add or subtract in the target language, but the translator may add and reduce information. This principles seem ambiguous, could it be done is teaching process?   Keywords: translation, characters building, translation competencies.
