Abstract

For many years, people are finding ways in anticipating disasters such as volcanic eruptions that happen frequently in Merapi area. Many early warning systems had been installed; however, casualties still took place. This study examined the community’s expectations of and responses to disasters, considering the resilience of people in the affected area. Through this research, researcher would like to know how Merapi slope community communicates and anticipates disasters in better way than in the past. The paper analyzes the concept of online and offline communities and the Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) while summarizing recent applications in theory and practice of community movement and communication. The research results showed that this community movement for evacuating refugees spread fast because it was supported by the strong local cultural-based values and social construction in communication technology. This local values also helps significantly during Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Although the communication within an online community acted as an accelerator, the combination of online and offline communities created a much more responsive, coordinated, and durable social movement. From the theory perspective, the local community engaged in the social construction of technology in using tools for disaster management. A qualitative ethnography approach was used as a research method, and data were collected using in-depth interviews and participatory observation.

Abstract

Pandemic brought a very significant learning change. All levels of education are urged to transform and adapt to the distance learning process. Learning takes place through technology-based platforms, such as Google Classroom, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx and so on. Changes in the learning system affect many aspects, especially communication. Communication between schools and students changes from face-to-face communication to virtual communication. During this distance learning, parents increasingly play a role in assisting the child's learning process. In this case, effective communication becomes a very important aspect. Unfortunately, one of the challenges in this distance learning period is the miscommunication that occurs between students, parents and teachers. The Research Methods is a comparative research method with a questionnaire instrument. The study was conducted at the Marie Joseph School in South Jakarta, Indonesia and focused on communication barriers between parents and teachers at the kindergarten and elementary school levels. The result shows communication barriers between parents-teachers and vice versa in Marie Joseph School is not found. So, we recommend that the Blended Learning program can be applied at the Marie Joseph School. Distance learning with face-to-face meetings can be combined into blended learning and schools can also form a Parent's Committee with measurable programs such as Parents Community Gathering & Discussion. Abstract

Bengkulu is an area that is prone to natural disasters in terms of its geographical condition. In addition, Bengkulu is currently facing non-natural disasters, one of which is the global COVID-19 pandemic. In dealing with disasters, it is necessary to have effective communication from the government to the community. With the current social restrictions, the use of media is one of the important things in communication. This study aims to analyze the communication carried out by the Bengkulu’s Regional Disaster Relief Agency in an effort to provide disaster information and education to the community. In the study of Agenda Setting, the media has ability to show audiences the things that are important for them to pay attention. This study observes and analyzes the content shared by the Bengkulu’s Regional Disaster Relief Agency on its social media pages (Facebook and Instagram). The research findings that the content displayed on the agency's social media is generally the form of reporting. The information shared is information when a disaster occurs, such as the magnitude of the earthquake and the number of COVID-19 cases. This information is not followed by pre- and post-disaster information. The content produced also does not open up space for interactivity to the audience. Other content is in the form of ceremonial activities. This shows that the Bengkulu’s Regional Disaster Relief Agency has not made disaster education efforts through social media. The media agenda that is prepared only aims to show the performance of the agency to the public. Keywords: Bengkulu, Disasters Communication, Information and Education, Social Media

Abstract

There is currently an emergence of Indonesian meme accounts on Instagram which specifically discuss the work culture in startups or technology-based companies. One of the most popular is @ecommurz, which has roughly 152,000 followers (by 12 July 2022). Using Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, this study aims to analyze how the working class group use memes from the @ecommurz Instagram account to demonstrate a resistance to hustle culture in Indonesia, particularly in startup environments. This study shows that Ecommurz has demonstrated the potential of meme accounts as a platform that unites middle-class workers to carry out resistance to the hegemony of the dominant culture by drawing on Gramsci's (1971) conceptions of cultural hegemony and resistance. Ecommurz has democratized the discussion of issues and difficulties encountered by many middle-class workers in the workplace through humorous and casual memes. Furthermore, it has also increased public awareness of workers' rights and prompted real systemic change.

Abstract

Apart from being a medium of communication, social media is also a place for some people to earn money. Not only adults, but children are also present on social media as objects to make money by becoming kidfluencers or child influencers. This becomes a controversy because social media platforms limit their users by age rules to avoid various dangers and negative impacts lurking that will create impact on children in the future. However, parents and relatives of the kidfluencers choose to neglect and continue breaking the rules on social media so their children could be kifdluencers. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of kidfluencers and their relation to the hyperreality theory by Jean Baudrillard. By becoming kidfluencers, these children are displayed in such a way on social media complete with their cuteness on daily basis that eventually invite various responses from their followers and influence them in most of the things they do. Yet, the actual reality does not always match what is present on social media. With a qualitative method, this phenomenon is then investigated to find out that what the kidfluencers show is not the actual reality, but only a representation that refers to themselves, not to others.

In Dramaturgy the roles that are displayed on each stage can be different according to the needs. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The data is deepened through interviews and literature sources from books, journals and articles. As a result, it was found that most of the second account owners used the account as a venue for self-expression. However, unfortunately many of these behaviors are carried out without considering the threatening side effects.

Abstract

The emergence of citizen journalism in a news story has its own dilemma. On the one hand, citizen journalism presents a news story on an event quickly, naturally, and without intervention from any party. But on the other hand, citizen journalism also has the potential to deliver fake news (hoaxes) and news that does not pay attention to journalistic rules and codes of ethics. This dilemma actually poses its own challenges for the mass media to accommodate citizen journalism reporting into a rigid and hierarchical media bureaucracy. This study aims to obtain an overview of bureaucracy in the mass media in a news story and find out the consequences of mass media collaboration with citizen journalism. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method using the classical organizational communication theory by Max Weber, namely bureaucracy. Informants consist of editors-in-chief, editors, journalists, and public relations selected from several mass media representing print media (Pikiran Rakyat), electronic media (MNC Media and RRI), and online media (Kumparan and Mojok). The results of this study show that bureaucracy is absolutely needed in all forms of reporting, both through conventional mass media and citizen journalism. Pikiran Rakyat, MNC Media, and RRI make information from citizen journalism as initial information which is then processed through bureaucratic procedures such as verification, confirmation, and follow-up to be used as news material. Meanwhile, Kumparan and Mojok provide space for citizen journalism through several channels while still following the prevailing media bureaucracy. This is done in maintaining the validity of news by paying attention to journalistic rules and codes of ethics.
