Abstract

This article tries to explore the usage of vocabulary learning strategies in second language learning on students with different background. It attempts to elicit useful ideas and gives a practical guidance in learning Chinese as a second language. This work explains how learning environment, cultural background and proficiency level can highly affect the choice of learning strategies. And even though students are learning different languages, there are similarities in their choice of strategies during the process of acquiring the target language.

Abstract

Pronoun renjia is a personal pronoun and its basic functions similar to “other people”. But, in the actual use of pronoun renjia, it can refer to the third person “he, she, they”, refers to the second “you”, and refers to the first person "I, we ". Pronoun renjia has a wide range of functions with a rich function of rhetoric and rhetorical effect compared to the three pronouns. The context of classroom teaching, appropriate design of language environment of pronoun renjia will give student a better understanding on the pronoun renjia’s usage.

Abstract

The Analects is one of the famous books from China which records Confucius’ teachings. Kungfu Panda and Kungfu Panda 2 are two famous animation films from America. After seeing these movies, there are some similar values that can be found between the movies and The Analects, especially in education field. The writer limited the scope into teaching and learning principles. The writer defined 2 main issues. First is to explain the correlation between Kungfu Panda and Kungfu Panda’s teaching and learning principles with The Analects. Second is to understand those principles and its application in our daily lives.  This research method is library research. The results stated that there are some correlation between Kungfu Panda, Kungfu Panda 2, and The Analects. Analyzing the correlation will help us to understand more about Confucius’ teaching, especially in education field.

Abstract

The end of an intimate relationship is a common incident in pre-marital young adult relationship. Hence, there are only a few literatures that explain this phenomenon. Therefore, this article is made to explain the definition, effect, individual differences and theoretical model explaining relationship dissolution, especially in young adult woman ini Indonesia. Theoretical review is used to analyze one case of young adult woman in Jakarta seeking for professional help in a Psychology Clinic. Method used to analyze data is qualitative, phenomenology with  Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) technique. Data are gathered with semi structured, open-ended and non-directive questions. The result of this study is the respondent going through the process of "making-confiding account" and griefing process with the passing of counseling. Theoretical understanding of the implications of the breakup on the practice of clinical psychology will also be addressed in the discussion.

Abstract

Batik is not only an element of culture and art, but it has creativity. Batik also has the message how to manage our emotions, because in making batik takes perseverance, optimism, cognitive function as well as patience. The aim of this research was to examine the relationship between creativity and emotional resiliency in students grade 4-6 elementary school. Subjects were students of MI Giriloyo 2 Yogyakarta grade 4 to grade 6, which amounted to 62 students. Data retrieval is done by spreading the figural creativity tests to measure creativity variables and emotional resilience questionnaire to measure the variables of emotional resilience. Subjects showed a fairly good creativity with emotional resilience pretty good anyway. Bivariate product moment correlation with SPSS 19.0 for windows between creativity with emotional resilience correlation values obtained at 0.184 and p = 0.153. Research shows that the zero hypothesis (H0) which states "There is no significant relationship between creativity and emotional resiliency in students MI Giriloyo 2 Yogyakarta" accepted while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states "There is a significant relationship between creativity and emotional resilience MI students Giriloyo 2 Yogyakarta” had rejected. Thus, the results showed no relationship between creativity and resilience significant emotions in students with extracurricular student-MI batik Giriloyo 2 Yogyakarta with a very low correlation coefficient. Other variables were not examined by the authors, such as internal and external factors correlated with the subjects supposedly more emotional resilience.

Abstract

Any relationship of any nature with whoever we relate to each other is needed trustworthiness or credible. The reality in the life of many cases that resulted in a loss of trust caused by the individual can not be trusted. Everyone wants to be a person who can be trusted, but not everyone can become a person who can be trusted, even more rare because it can be said that the most serious challenge to become a person that can be trusted is against yourself, because the necessary humility and courage release selfishness, and fight for the truth. This article draws empirical studies and literature, which explains about the elements needed to become a person that can be trusted. Elements of credibility related to the integrity of the character: integrity and intent, while related to the competence: capability and result, and how to improve the quality of these elements, so that eventually you can become a person who can be trusted.

Abstract

This research is an exploratory qualitative approach using secondary data from the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI), which aims to identify the voters’ behavior of Jakarta Governor candidates period 2012-2017. The results showed that the implementation of the election was considered by the respondents Honest-Fair (JURDIL) and quite satisfying. The selection was won by Joko Widodo – Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. However, the numbers did not reach half of the voters. Therefore, the election took 2 rounds. For Governor-Vice Governor couples socialization, both the majority and not overtaken, Fauzi Bowo – Nachrowi achieved top ranking with very significant. But apparently, successful socialization of media did not match with the victory in the election. This study aims to determine the behavior of voters in Jakarta governor election. The result, in contrary, shows that the couple in number two socialization won the election. For the popularity, it was not in tune with the socialization. Personally, the popularity of Joko Widodo topped more than the incumbent. It is believed that the performance and imaging of Joko Widodo as mayor of Solo viewed favorably by the public. Close relationship with lower level people and hawkers handling gained the voters’ sympathy. Regarding the evaluation of the incumbent, the majority responded quite satisfied because they could understand the complexity of the Jakarta capital region. But ironically, the majority answered there is no change during the leadership of the incumbent governor. Voters preference based on gender, religion, ethnicity, and age in majority chose the couple of Joko Widodo – Tjahaja Basuki Purnama.

Abstract

Advertisement is one of promotional tools used by marketer to communicate with its audience or consumer which can be done through newspaper, magazine, internet, radio, and/or television. Using advertisement, the marketer tries to create signs in the message to the audience to make sure they really understand the message. The objective of the study is to analyze how the signs are created in the texts displayed on infant formula SGM Eksplor Presinutri 3 TV advertisement. The metodology is qualitative research using semiotics analysis. Peirce semiotics approach is applied to explore the signs in the advertisement. Secondary data were used, also supported by study literature, to conduct a deep analysis of this study. The research finding shows signs were used by the marketer to deliver the message of this product.

Abstract

The tenet of good translation is to achieve idiomatic equivalence. However, when the translation work is going to be published, there should be some adjustments, either lexical or structural. The reasons for adjustment might be various: for politeness, conciseness, etc.  This article discusses the translation adjustments of a Chinese philosophical book: The Sayings of Zhuang Zi by comparing the original translation by the translator with the published book which has been edited by publisher’s editor.  The objectives of this study are to find different types of translation adjustment made by the editor and to analyze the possible reasons for the adjustment.

Abstract

By cooperating with Yayasan Komodo Kita and Mandiri Bank, English department of Binus University was chiefly in charge of a 15 day Training Of Trainers (TOT) program for 24 participants prepared for teaching English in Labuan Bajo, Flores. The training was aimed to prepare already fluent- in – English- teachers, tour guides, and university graduates with the right tools and method in teaching English. To assess the program, a set of evaluation questionnaire was given to the participants to know their responses on the training material, the trainers, and the program by using Likert’s scale type questions. An observational record was also used as a tool to measure participants’ achievement. The questionnaire reveals that the participants respond positively to the program and the material and favor the approaches made by the trainers during the training. However, the training shows various results in participants’ performance. It is assumed that the non teaching background of the majority of participants and the level of English as two key factors influencing their performance.
