Abstract

There are many experts of various disciplines provide definition andunderstanding of religion. Some of them have been revealed in thiswriting related to anthropology and sociology only. E.B. Taylor was thefirst who studied and provided minimal definition of religion as a beliefto spiritual beings. He said that the origin of religion began when theman was aware of the existence of soul. Frazer believes that the origin ofreligion began when the man was not able to solve various problems oftheir lives due to limitation of their reasoning. Whereas Durkheim assumesthat religion was a sosial product as a collective thing with theaim to unite the members of society in a moral community. Durkheimemphasizes that nothing is wrong in religion. In reality all religions areright in its own model. This means religion is right based on the religionitself and its adherents. The writer states that the frames to understandreligious phenomena are : first, it has supernatural concept; second, ithas doctrine and teaching in the holy book, revelation, oral and writtensources; third, cosmology that is how this nature is composed followingthe perception of its followers; fourth, ritual or charity ceremony, andfifth, mediator of religion and religious group.

Abstract

In this article I try to describe the activitity of helping each other in thecelebration of wedding party at Buginese society in Madello village Barruregency South Sulawesi. The principal of helping each other which I observedwas in the form of giving service, goods, and money to the parents ofbridegroom and bride. These activities of helping each other are based onthe principle of reciprocity from customary law and religious law. It seemsthat the moslem were earlier practiced these principle tfian the publish ofMalinowski's finding in Trobriand Island (1926). In my assumption, theactivity of helping each other at the Buginese wedding will exist in thefuture as long as they obey to their customary law and religious law.

Abstract

article is derived from my own experience living with bissu communityin Pangkep last year. I could not say that my research was a pureresearch. I just lived with them, tried to learn to each other, between meand the bissu communityThis article aims to reveal the encountering process of Islam with one ofthe representations of Buginese culture: Bissu, a local community inSouth Sulawesi. In old days, Bissu was spiritual figure of old Buginesebelieved to descend to middle earth together with Batara Guru. Sincelong time ago, Bissu has led the ritual ceremony of the community andthe kingdom, before finally a majority of Buginese people embracesIslam. However, in small part of Buginese community, Bissu remainstheir spiritual leader. Islam and this small part of Buginese culture, since their early encounter, have filled each other. No domination. Bissuhas never kept quiet. They always play their negotiation role. Islam, onthe other hand, emerges with his kind face, although sometimes, particularlyin current times, this process of encounter is in tension.

Abstract

As stated by Berger, Hajj as religious practice is attached to culturalcontext and meaning dialecticism. The difference of hajj symbol as culturalproduct construction from others laid on its transcendence and itsreligious dimension. Its cultural meaning has also changed overtime. This change can be looked on the newly hajj interpretation which hasdeviated from its true meaning written in Islamic texts, and implicatedto the current Buginese community social and cultural practice andinter relation. As the symbol of hajj relatively attached more to the femalehajj, the number of female hajj, as its implication, is more higherthan male hajj.
