Abstract

Nowadays, traditional home gateways must support increasingly complex applications while keeping their cost reasonably low.Software Defined Networking (SDN) would simplify the management of those devices, but such an approach is typically reserved for new hardware devices, specifically engineered for this paradigm.As a consequence, typical SDN-based home gateway performs the switching in software, resulting in non-negligible performance degradation.In this paper, we provide our experience and findings of adding the OpenFlow support into a non-OpenFlow compatible home gateway, exploiting the possible hardware speedup available in the existing platform.We present our solution that transparently offloads a portion of the OpenFlow rule into the hardware, while keeping the remaining ones in software, being able to support the presence of multiple hardware tables with a different set of features.Moreover, we illustrate the design choices used to implement the functionalities required by the OpenFlow protocol (e.g., packet-in, packet-out messages) and finally, we evaluate the resulting architecture, showing the significant advantage in terms of performance that can be achieved by exploiting the underlying hardware, while maintaining an SDN-type ability to program and to instantiate desired network operations from a central controller.

Abstract

Internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical objects connected to provide various services. IoT is expanding rapidly, and is positively influencing many areas. The impact of IoT is evident in medical field, manufacturing units and livestock. The IoT is also vulnerable to many cyber threats, owing to its limited resources and battery operation. In contemporary times the security threats like DDoS, botnet malware, man in the middle, flood attacks and ransomware are affecting the smooth functioning of IoT. Ransomware has emerged as one of the biggest threat in cyber world. Ransomware is a type of malware that stops the access to files by encrypting them and decrypts the files only when a ransom is paid. The negligence towards the IoT ransomware can result in disastrous outcomes. In this paper, the growth of ransomware attacks for past few years is shown with special focus on ransomwares threatening IoT. A detection mechanism for IoT ransomware attack is presented that is designed after study of ransomware for IoT. The proposed model monitors the incoming IoT traffic through Software Defined Network (SDN) gateway. It uses policies framed in SDN controller for detection and alleviation of ransomware in IoT.

Abstract

Channel coding is commonly based on protecting information to be communicated across an unreliable medium, by adding patterns of redundancy into the transmission path. Also referred to as forward error control coding (FECC), the technique is widely used to enable correcting or at least detecting bit errors in digital communication systems. In this paper we study an original FECC known as polar coding which has proven to meet the typical use cases of the next generation mobile standard. This work is motivated by the suitability of polar codes for the new coming wireless era. Hence, we investigate the performance of polar codes in terms of bit error rate (BER) for several codeword lengths and code rates. We first perform a discrete search to find the best operating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at two different code rates, while varying the blocklength. We find in our extensive simulations that the BER becomes more sensitive to operating SNR (OSNR) as long as we increase the blocklength and code rate. Finally, we note that increasing blocklength achieves an SNR gain, while increasing code rate changes the OSNR domain. This trade-off sorted out must be taken into consideration while designing polar codes for high-throughput application.

Abstract

In this paper, design of proportional- derivative (PD) controller, pseudo-derivative-feedback (PDF) controller and PDF with feedforward (PDFF) controller for magnetic suspending system have been presented. Tuning of the above controllers is achieved based on Bat algorithm (BA). BA is a recent bio-inspired optimization method for solving global optimization problems, which mimic the behavior of micro-bats. The weak point of the standard BA is the exploration ability due to directional echolocation and the difficulty in escaping from local optimum. The new improved BA enhances the convergence rate while obtaining optimal solution by introducing three adaptations namely modified frequency factor, adding inertia weight and modified local search. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is examined by applied to several benchmark problems that are adopted from literature. The results of IBA are compared with the results collected from standard BA and the well-known particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The simulation results show that the IBA has a higher accuracy and searching speed than the approaches considered. Finally, the tuning of the three controlling schemes using the proposed algorithm, standard BA and PSO algorithms reveals that IBA has a higher performance compared with the other optimization algorithms

Abstract

An electric power system is usually exposed to unequal and variable loads across its three phases, which leads to voltage unbalance and variation, making the three-phase voltages asymmetrical in nature at the distribution end. This problem is clearly evident in Iraq country, particularly with regard to the fluctuating voltage levels of electricity distribution during peak hours. Providing a three-phase motor with asymmetric voltages is badly affecting its working performance. Estimating the performance of this motor at steady-state under different conditions of voltage disturbances is investigated in this paper through Matlab simulation using Symmetrical component approach. The motor performance represented by active and reactive input powers, output put power, developed torque, power losses, efficiency and power factor is analyzed under full load conditions. Also, the steady-state power losses- and torque-slip characteristics at certain degrees of voltage unbalance have been calculated and plotted

Abstract

This paper proposes a new stereo matching algorithm which uses local-based method. The Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) algorithm produces accurate result on the disparity map for the textured regions. However, this algorithm is sensitive to low texture areas and high noise on images with high different brightness and contrast. To get over these problems, the proposed algorithm utilizes SAD algorithm with RGB color channels differences and combination of gradient matching to improve the accuracy on the images with high brightness and contrast. Additionally, an edge-preserving filter is used at the second stage which is known as Bilateral Filter (BF). The BF filter is capable to work with the low texture areas and to reduce the noise and sharpen the images. Additionally, BF is strongĀ  against theĀ  distortions due to high brightness and contrast. The proposed work in this paper produces accurate results and performs much better compared with some established algorithms. This comparison is based on the standard quantitative measurements using the stereo benchmarking evaluation from the Middlebury.

Abstract

This paper presents an investigation on the enhancement of electrical insulations of power cables materials using a new multi-nanoparticles technique. It has been studied the effect of adding specified types and concentrations of nanoparticles to polymeric materials such as PVC for controlling on electric and dielectric performance. Prediction of effective dielectric constant has been done for the new nanocomposites based on Interphase Power Law (IPL) model. The multi-nanoparticles technique has been succeeded for enhancing electric and dielectric performance of power cables insulation compared with adding individual nanoparticles. Finally, it has been investigated on electric field distribution in the new proposed modern insulations for three-phase core belted power cables. This research has focused on studying development of PVC nanocomposite materials performance with electric field distribution superior to the unfilled matrix, and has stressed particularly the effect of filler volume fraction on the electric field distribution.

Abstract

Primary user emulator (PUE) attack occurs in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) when a malicious secondary user (SU) poses as a primary user (PU) in order to deprive other legitimate SUs the right to free spectral access for opportunistic communication. In most cases, these legitimate SUs are unable to effectively detect PUEs because the quality of the signals received from a PUE may be severely attenuated by channel fading and/or shadowing. Consequently, in this paper, we have investigated the use of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) to improve PUE detection based on a hybrid localization scheme. We considered different pairs of secondary users (SUs) over different received signal strength (RSS) values to evaluate the energy efficiency, accuracy, and speed of the new cooperative scheme. Based on computer simulations, our findings suggest that a PUE can be effectively detected by a pair of SUs with a low Root Mean Square Error rate of 0.0047 even though these SUs may have close RSS values within the same cluster. Furthermore, our scheme performs better in terms of speed, accuracy and low energy consumption rates when compared with other PUE detection schemes. Thus, it is a viable proposition to better detect PUEs in CRNs.

Abstract

The power quality injected into the grid and the performance of the converter system depend on the quality of the inverter current control. This paper proposes a design and control technique for a photovoltaic inverter connected to the grid based on the digital pulse-width modulation (DSPWM) which can synchronise a sinusoidal output current with a grid voltage and control a power factor. The current injected must be sinusoidal with reduced harmonic distortion. The connected PV system is based on H-Bridge inverter controlled by bipolar PWM Switching. The current control technique and functional structure of this system are presented and simulated. Detailed analysis, Simulations results of output voltage and current waveform demonstrate the contribution of this approach to determinate the suitable control of the system. A digital design of a generator PWM using VHDL is proposed and implemented on an Xilinx FPGA and it has been validated with experimental results. As a result, the proposed inverter implementation is simple, and it becomes an attractive solution for low power grid connected applications.

Abstract

Image Super resolution is used to upscale the low resolution Images. It is also known as image upscaling .This paper focuses on upscaling of compressed images based on Interpolation techniques. A content adaptive interpolation method of image upscaling has been proposed. This interpolation based scheme is useful for single image based Super-resolution (SR) methods .The presented method works on horizontal, vertical and diagonal directions of an image separately and it is adaptive to the local content of an image. This method relies only on single image and uses the content of the original image only; therefore the proposed method is more practical and realistic. The simulation results have been compared to other standard methods with the help of various performance matrices like PSNR, MSE, MSSIM etc. which indicates the preeminence of the proposed method.
