Abstract

Mobile Satellite Communications (MSC) have become an essential part of the world telecommunication infrastructure. However, the systems suffer from multipath propagation effects. In this paper, error analysis of M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) with Equal Gain Combiner (EGC) over mobile satellite channel was carried out. The satellite channel was modelled as the product of Rayleigh and Ricians. This was then used to develop a system model for the received signal which was simulated and evaluated in terms of Average Symbol Error Rate (ASER) using the exact closed-form expression derived from moment generating function (MGF) and Padé Approximants (PA) theory. The results showed that at 16dB, Rician factor ‘k’=0, ASER obtained are 41.83%, 18.56% and 10.81% for paths ‘L’ = 2, 3, 4 respectively. ASER values reduced as ‘k’ increased. Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study in terms of power quality and fuel consumption in electricity generation using three kinds of fuel: gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and biogas from anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste. The electrical parameters measured and compared are voltage, current, frequency, active power, apparent power, reactive power, power factor, displacement power factor, current harmonics, voltage harmonics, transient, sags and swell. From the experiment, resistive loads (100 W bulb and 2 x 100 W bulbs) and resistive-inductive load (125 W water pump) were used as loads of generator set. It can be seen that in general, the power quality among those three fuels shows almost the similar performance. The problem on using combustible gases, either LPG or biogas, significantly appears at the frequency with greatly difference to the standard (i.e. 50 Hz).DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v3i6.3942

Abstract

Security of a modern design of steganography on lossless compression isstudied in this paper. Investigation of a set of methods presented hereindicates that there are various approaches to establish a hidden and saferelationship with the minimum cost for text files. Although, steganography of information in text is one of the most difficult areas of steganography, many efforts were made in this regard. With regard to the spread of this category and existence of wide volume of approaches, this paper deals with comparison and evaluation of steganography security by a statisticalcompression method called arithmetic coding and other methods of textsteganography. Moreover, this method is available for audio-visual and video files. In addition, stego key was placed in a format that it would not arouse any suspicions. It is notable that this new method of steganography or rewriting and syntactic and semantic review does not reveal the secret message and results in 82.88% improvement in security.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v3i6.4068

Abstract

This paper studies the performance of the simple kalman filter for dynamic changes of the system variables. The kalman filter was used to detect the fundamental component of power system signal contained harmonics. First the performance of the kalman filter was examined for a sudden change in the amplitude of the fundamental component, then for a frequency variation. Abstract

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a technology that uses radio waves to transfer data from an electronic tag, called RFID tag or label, attached to an object, through a reader for the purpose of identifying and tracking the object. RFID technology is a matured technology that has been widely deployed by various organizations as a part of their automation systems. In this project, an RFID based system has been built in order to produce an attendance management system. An automated attendance management software will not only make the entire process simple, but will also provide a well-structured and analyzed report of the pattern of student attendance and time management, which can further help in allocating and using the human resources in an organization to the maximum possible benefit. This system consists of two main parts which include: the hardware and the software. The hardware consists of a motor unit and RFID reader. The RFID reader, which is a low-frequency reader (125 kHz), is connected to the host computer via a serial to USB converter cable. The Time-Attendance System GUI is developed using Visual Basic.Net. The Attendance Management System provides the functionalities of the overall system such as displaying live ID tags transactions, registering ID, deleting ID, recording attendance and other minor functions. Abstract

Recently, the identification system is not limited in using an ID and personal identification number (PIN) but also in using biometriccharacteristics.One of biometric characteristics that has been widely used is fingerprint.This paper proposes a fingerprint matching algorithms using ordinal measure of DCT coefficient. The ordinal measure of DCT coefficient is generated from DCT blocks with size 8x8 pixels. Matching level was determined by computing the Minkowski distance between features of input fingerprint image and fingerprint images in the database. The simulations were accomplished using 128 fingerprints that have been normalized, from which as many as 1024 genuine attempts and 15360 impostor attempts were generated. The proposed algorithms achievedan Equal Error Rate (EER) at threshold 0.3. At the EER, it resulted in FAR value of 0.82%, and FRR value of 78.41% respectively.The low value of FAR showed that the system wasconsiderably secure.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v3i6.4373

Abstract

In the present day world power system deregulation is at its full stretch. In this deregulated environment there is a clear need for adequate computation of ATC which is currently being given at most importance. The insertion of FACTS devices in electrical systems seems to be a promising strategy to enhance ATC. In this paper, the viability and technical merits of boosting ATC using TCSC are analyzed. The methods used for determining ATC are linear methods, which are based on MVA loading of the system considering system thermal limit constraints, neglecting bus voltages and static collapse. Power Transfer Distribution Factors, commonly referred to as PTDFs, express the percentage of a power transfer that flows on a transmission facility. They are used to determine the maximum ATC that may be available across the system without violating line thermal limits. The effect of reactive power flows in line loading is not considered in linear ATC which is a major limitation. This paper describes a fast algorithm to incorporate this effect. In this paper the line post transfer complex flow is estimated based on exact circle equation and then ATC is evaluated using active power distribution factors. Abstract

There is a huge demand in high speed arithmetic blocks, due to increased performance of processing units. For higher frequency clocks of the system, the arithmetic blocks must keep pace with greater requirement of more computational power. Area and speed are usually conflicting constraints so that improving speed results mostly in larger areas. In our research we will try to determine the best solution to this problem by comparing the results of different multipliers. Different sized of two algorithms for high speed hardware multipliers were studied and implemented ie. Parallel multiplier, Bit serial multiplier. The workings of these two multipliers were compared by implementing each of them separately in VHDL. A number of high speed adder designs are developed and algorithm and design of these adders are discussed. The result of this research will help us to choose the better option between serial and parallel multipliers for both fixed point and floating point multipliers to fabricate in different systems. As multipliers form one of the most important components of many systems, analysing different multipliers will help us to frame a better system with area and better speed.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v3i6.4185

Abstract

A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) use radio waves to identify an object, this technology become useful for the future because of the advantages. Access system using RFID card is commonly used in a building, parking area, housing complex, etc. This paper explore and develop the use of RFID EPC Class1 Gen2 tag for multipurpose access system for   identification and access control, such as personal identity identification, door access control and gate entry permit or access control. With the same tag Identity (ID) user can access many areas. RFID EPC Class1 Gen2 tag working at UHF band 902-928 MHz, this type of tag more suitable for multi access control because of scaterring technique in reading for the tag, as for gate access need longer distance read range. Abstract

Due to the increase in electricity energy consumption and the fact that about 90 % of fuels being used now are co2 pollutant and the crisis has been caused by greenhouse gases have made moving toward renewable energies unavoidable. At present, considering electricity crisis in Pakistan, although only 46% of the population of Pakistan have the facility of electricity and the remaining are still living in darkness but still we face a major power crisis. Modern technology needs a huge amount of electrical power for its various operations. Electricity production is the single largest source of pollution in the whole world.  In this paper, we have presented and reviewed a method to produce pollution free electricity by some techniques like Piezoelectric effect in some specisl crystal such as pyroelectric crystal, Quartz crystal, PZT and using them in piezoelectric roads, as congestion on roads is becoming inevitable with the fancy of masses towards personal transportation systems for their growing mobility.
