Abstract

Access to an area or environment can be controlled by conventional and electronic keys, identity cards, personal identification numbers (PINs) pads and smartcards.  Due to certain limitations of existing door access schemes deployed for security in buildings, this paper presents speaker recognition for building security as a better means of admission into important places. This is proposed due mainly to the fact that speech cannot be stolen, copied, forgotten, lost or guessed with accuracy. This paper, therefore presents design of an affordable voice activated door control system for building security. The proposed system uses the Mel Frequency Cepstrum and the Gaussian Mixture Model for feature extraction and template pattern matching respectively. The analysis of the result which is based on the false acceptance and rejection rates indicate a system accuracy of more than 80%.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.6447

Abstract

This paper implements the phase imbalance scheme for damping torsional oscillations of a series capacitor compensated power system. The IEEE Second Benchmark Model, system-1, wherein two turbine generator model and two system model connected to an infinite bus is employed as a standard system model to study the concept of subsynchronous resonance. The turbine generator models have a common torsional mode. The Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) is employed to simulate the damping effects provided by the phase imbalance scheme. The simulation results also show that parallel phase imbalance scheme gives the better damping characteristics when compared to that of series phase imbalance scheme.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.6296

Abstract

Impedance-admittance converter is shortly termed as immittance converter. In this converter, the output current is proportional to the input voltage and the output voltage is proportional to the input current. The output current is thus independent of the load. This research evaluates the characteristics of a proposed π-CLCL immittance converter, which is a combination of the typical π- and T-type configurations, for constant current and dynamic load applications. The input-output characteristics and efficiency characteristics are analyzed and simulated. The characteristics are compared to that of the typical π- and T-type converters. The input-output characteristics and efficiency characteristics are then examined experimentally. It is observed that the experimental results agree with those of the simulation ones, and confirm that the π-CLCL configuration is more efficient than the typical π- and T-type immittance converters while maintaining a nearly constant output current and thus applicable for dynamic loads.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.5957

Abstract

Stone inscripted literature speaks about the history, language of different regions of the world. Preservation of such document through digitalization process is become very important. To stop degradation and missing further, the analysis of the same will through light on historical events of that region. In this connection present work proposes a simple method of digitization using ordinary digital camera further, the pre-processing algorithm is implemented to enhance the image and improve the readability. Here it recognizes the Kannada characters based on template matching. In this method is normally implemented by first picking template and then it  call the search image, then by simply comparing the  template over each point in the search image and it calculate the sum of products between the coefficient. Based on this calculated product value it recognizes the character.  Cross correlation technique is implemented in matching the characters coefficient. Experimental results shows, it demonstrates relatively high accuracy in recognizing Stone inscriptions characters of both Hoysala, Ganga time frames and with better time efficiency when compared to previous methods. DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.6333

Abstract

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), a frequency division multiplexing scheme utilized as a digital multi-carrier modulation technique, implemented using optical fiber link for practical applications thereby developing optical OFDM using OptSim simulation. OFDM has many advantages over other modulation techniques such as a high resistance to inter-symbol interference (ISI) and it is robust against fading caused by multipath propagation. Optical fiber cable (OFC) as a transmission media is used for distortion less transmission of data at a very higher data speed. OFC cable has a lot of advantages over other media. And OFDM over OFC cable will provide data speeds at a very high speed and with very less losses. In this work optical transmitter and receiver for OFDM based optical network has designed for high speed data transmission over optical fiber. While modeling the system we have also used post,,pre and symmetric compensation technique to reconfigure the bandwidth along with add drop multiplexer, tunable filters and optical amplifiers to achieve high performance with minimum distortion and low bit error rate (BER).DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.5261

Abstract

Now a day’s digital image processing applications are widely used in various fields such as medical, military, satellite, remote sensing and even web applications also. In any application image denoising is a challenging task because noise removal will increase the digital quality of an image and will improve the perceptual visual quality. In this paper we proposed a new method “local spayed and optimized center pixel weights (LSOCPW) with non local means” to improve the denoising performance of digital color image sequences. Simulation results show that the proposed method has given the better performance when compared to the existing algorithms in terms of peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and mean square error (MSE).DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.6624

Abstract

One of the big surprises of the 21st century has been the ability of all sorts of interesting Web applications to support themselves through advertising, rather than subscription. While radio and television have managed to use advertising as their primary revenue source, most media – newspapers and magazines, for example – have had to use a hybrid approach, combining revenue from advertising and subscriptions.  A venue for on-line advertising has been search, and much of the effectiveness of search advertising came from the “adwords” model of matching search queries to advertisements. This paper presents the algorithms for optimizing the way of matching search queries to advertisements is done. The algorithms discussed are of unusual type; they are greedy and they are on-line which are used to tackle the adwords problem.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.6626

Abstract

In this paper we present the design of a quadrature decoder/counter interface IC (ASIC) that performs the decoding, counting, and bus interface function in digital motor control systems, employing an Altra FLEX 10KA, 2s150fg456 Xilinx device. The ASIC contains a pair of digital filters, a quadrature decoder, an up/down counter, a latch and inhibit circuit, and an 8-bit bus interface to a digital processing system. The design of digital of the digital filter is based on the finite state machine model with datapath (FSMD). A novel scheme for detecting the motor rotation direction is also proposed. The ASIC can be applied to a digital motor control system forgetting the rotation speed or position of the motor, which is quipped with an optical encoder. The data acquisition can be extended to 16-bit integer format by two continuos reading cycles. Simulation and experimental tests are shown to verify the ASIC function properly.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i4.5500

Abstract

This article has been retracted: please see Elsevier Policy on Article Withdrawal (https://www.elsevier.com/about/our-business/policies/article-withdrawal). This article has been retracted by agreement between the author and the Editor-in-Chief. A request by the author to update the paper after publication resulted in an agreement to retract the paper by the Author and Editor-in-Chief. -------------------- This paper addresses a new iterative blind carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimator in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In our scenario, relying on a hybrid independent component analysis (ICA) scheme, a blind frequency offset estimator is proposed for OFDM systems employing single antenna. The proposed estimator is a combination of the fast fixed-point ICA (FastICA) algorithm and the natural-gradient ICA algorithm, which inherits the fast convergence and high accuracy of theses algorithms, respectively. As a major advantage, the proposed estimator works in an efficient way in practical high-data-rate OFDM systems especially with large number of subcarriers. To demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed algorithm, numerical results are provided from computer simulations and comparisons are made with other existing CFO estimators in the literature. It is shown that by applying our proposed algorithm, the normalized mean-square error of the CFO estimator is decreased to a high extent. DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i5.6533
