Abstract

The longitudinal spatial hole burning (LSHB) effect has been known to limit the performance of distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers to achieve a better dynamic signal mode operation (DSMO). So, in order to ensure a stable (DSMO), we propose a novel device design of two electrode DFB lasers with longitudinal variation in the coupling coefficient (distributed coupling coefficient (DCC)), the structure also contains a phase shifted in middle of the cavity. By means of the finite difference time domain (FDTD) numerical method, we analyze dynamic response of our structure and we also compare the results with the conventional two electrode DFB laser (TE-DFB). The numerical simulation shows that, a better dynamic signal mode has been achieved by TE-DCC-DFB lasers in comparison with TE-DFB laser due to its better and high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR). Therefore, the TE-DCC-DFB lasers will be useful to extend the transmission distance in optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract

Public transportation is important issue in Taiwan. Recently, mobile application named Bus Route Planning was developed to help the user to get information about public transportation using bus. But, this application often gave the user inaccurate bus information and this application has less attractive GUI. To overcome those 2 problems, it needed 2 kinds of solutions. First, a more accurate time prediction algorithm is needed to predict the arrival time of bus. Second, augmented reality technology can be used to make a GUI improvement. In this research, Automatic Data Collector system was proposed to give support for those 2 solutions at once. This proposed system has 3 main functionalities. First, data collector function to provide some data sets that can be further analyzed as an base of time prediction algorithm. Second, data updater functions to provide the most updated bus information for used in augmented reality system. Third, data management function to gave the system better functionality to supported those 2 related systems. This proposed Automatic Data Collector system was developed using batch data processing scenario and SQL native query in Java programming language. The result of testing shown this data processing scenario was very effective to made database manipulation especially for large-sized data.

Abstract

Motivated by Artstein and Sontag universal formula, this brief paper presents an explicit proof of the universal formula for asymptotic stabilization and asymptotic disturbance rejection of a nonlinear system with mismatched uncertainties and time varying disturbances. We prove the stability via Lyapunov stability criteria. We also prove that the control law satisfies small control property such that the magnitude of the control signal can be bounded without the catastropic effect to the closed loop stability. For clarity, we benchmark the proposed approach with other method namely a Lyapunov redesign with nonlinear damping function. We give a numerical example to verify the results.

Abstract

In this work, we propose NRDPF-VQA (No Reference Distortion Patch Features Video Quality Assessment) model aims to use to measure the video quality assessment for H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Coding). The proposed method takes advantage of the contrast changes in the video quality by luminance changes. The proposed quality metric was tested by using LIVE video database. The experimental results show that the new index performance compared with the other NR-VQA models that require training on LIVE video databases, CSIQ video database, and VQEG HDTV video database. The values are compared with human score index analysis of DMOS.

Abstract

A compact planar antenna for dual band applications is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna has Dumbbell shaped defect on the ground plane and it is fed by Asymmetric coplanar strip(ACS). The antenna is printed on FR4 epoxy substrate and it has a compact size of 21× 19 × 1.6 mm3. The antenna exhibits a dual band of resonances at 3.4GHz and 5.5 GHz which is used for WiMAX/WLAN. The planar design, simple feeding techniques and compactness make it easy for the integration of the antenna into circuit boards. Details of the antenna design and simulated results are presented and discussed. Simulation tool, based on the method of moments (Mentor Graphics IE3D version 15.10) has been used to analyze and optimize the antenna. Various features such as compactness, simple con-figuration and low fabrication cost make the antenna is suitable for dual band wireless applications.

Abstract

Multiple antenna configurations can be used to increase the data throughput reducing the effects of multipath fading and interference when channel bandwidth is limited. Orthogonal Space Time Block Codes along with Transmit antenna selection can improve the performance of multiple input multiple output systems. In this paper, we present the Transmit Antenna Selection (TAS) technique based on the Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) scheme with single antenna selection for image transmission. The performance analysis of the system was carried out under different fading channels i.e. Rayleigh and Rician channel for image input. We design end to end TAS/MRC system in Simulink with advancements in the channel designs and receive diversity techniques along with the feedback models. The Bit Error Rate (BER) analysis was performed for the combinations of number of transmit and receive antennas for TAS/MRC system for various fading environments.

Abstract

This study aims to select the important features from the combination of porous trabecular pattern with anthropometric features for osteoporosis screening. The study sample has their bone mineral density (BMD) measured at the proximal femur/lumbar spine using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Morphological porous features such as porosity, the size of porous, and the orientation of porous are obtained from each dental radiograph using digital image processing. The anthropometric features considered are age, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Decision tree (J.48 method) is used to evaluate the accuracy of morphological porous and anthropometric features for selection data. The study shows that the most important feature is age and the considered features for osteoporosis screening are porosity, vertical pore, and oblique pore. The decision tree has considerably high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity.

Abstract

Knowing the various physical mechanisms of the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) helps us to develop a more complete numerical model. It also enables us to simulate more realistically the static behavior of the SOAs’ birefringence effect. This way, it allows us to study more precisely the behavior of SOAs, and particularly the impact of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) or the pump and probe signals as well as the optical functions based on the non-linearity of the component. In static regime, the SOAs possess a very low amplification threshold and a saturation power of the gain which mainly depends on the optical power injected into the active region. Beyond the optical input power, the SOA is in the saturated gain regime which gives it a nonlinear transmission behavior. Our detailed numerical model offers a set of equations and an algorithm that predict their behavior. The equations form a theoretical base from which we have coded our model in several files.cpp that the Language C++ executes. It has enabled us, from the physical and geometrical parameters of the component, to recover all the relevant values ​​for a comprehensive study of SOAs in static and dynamic regimes. In this paper, we propose to make a static characterization of the effect of the nonlinear polarization rotation by realizing a pump-probe assemblage to control the power and state of polarization at the entering of the SOA.

Abstract

This paper investigates the harmonic distortion and losses in power distribution systems due to the dramatic increase of nonlinear loads. This paper tries to determine the amount of the harmonics generated by nonlinear loads in residential, commercial and office loads in distribution feeders and estimates the energy losses due to these harmonics. Norton equivalent modeling technique has been used to model the nonlinear loads. The presented harmonic Norton equivalent models of the end user appliances are accurately obtained based on the experimental data taken from the laboratory measurements. A 20 kV/400V distribution feeder is simulated to analyze the impact of nonlinear loads on feeder harmonic distortion level and losses. The model follows a “bottom-up” approach, starting from end users appliances Norton equivalent model and then modeling residential, commercial and office loads. Two new indices are introduced by the authors to quantize the effect of each nonlinear appliance on the power quality of a distribution feeder and loads are ranked based on these new defined indices. The simulation results show that harmonic distortion in distribution systems can increase power losses up to 20%.
