Abstract

Nowadays, the use of the wind energy has known an important increase because it is clean and cheap. However, many technical issues could occur due to the integration of wind power plants into power grids. As a result, many countries have published grid code requirements that new installed wind turbines have to satisfy in order to facilitate its intergration to electrical networks. Among those requirements, the wind farms must be able to participate to ancillary services for instance voltage regulation and reactive power control. Nevertheless, in case of small wind farms having not the necessary reactive power capability to contribute to reactive power support, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices could also be used to participate to reactive power support. In this paper, an optimization method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is presented. This method allows getting the optimal location and reactive power injection of both wind power plants (WPP) and synchronous var compensators (SVC) with the objective to improve the voltage profile and to minimize the active power losses. The IEEE 14 bus system and a 20 MW wind farm based doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) are used to validate the proposed algorithm. The simulation results are analysed and compared.

Abstract

Wireless sensor network will be the most dominating field in future era. There are certain issues which wireless sensor network suffers from. The main concern with wireless sensor network is limited energy which directly impact on network lifetime. In this paper we modify the cluster selection procedure of MODLEACH. MODLEACH protocol use threshold value for selecting cluster head. Once a cluster head is selected, it retains its position until it bypasses the threshold limit. In Basic LEACH, it does not use any threshold value but it randomly selects cluster head from the available nodes. We combine the probabilistic nature of LEACH to select the cluster head and threshold base selection of cluster head of MODLEACH. We also apply proposed modification in EAMMH protocol. Our main focus is on the enhancement of network lifetime, and we got significant improvement in network lifetime.

Abstract

The usage of existing Internet architecture is shrouded by various security loopholes and hence is highly ineffective towards resisting potential threats over internet. Hence, it is claimed that future internet architecture has been evolved as a solution to address this security gaps of existing internet architecture. Therefore, this paper initiates its discussion by reviewing the existing practices of web security in conventional internet architecture and has also discussed about some recent solutions towards mitigating potentially reported threats e.g. cross-site scripting, SQL inject, and distributed denial-of-service. The paper has also discussed some of the recent research contribution towards security solution considering future internet architecture. The proposed manuscripts contributes to showcase the true effectiveness of existing approaches with respect to advantages and limitation of existing approaches along with explicit highlights of existing research problems that requires immediate attention.

Abstract

For an effective and reliable solar energy production, there is need for precise solar radiation knowledge. In this study, two hybrid approaches are investigated for horizontal solar radiation prediction in Nigeria. These approaches combine an Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Wavelet Transform (WT) algorithms. Meteorological data comprising of monthly mean sunshine hours (SH), relative humidity (RH), minimum temperature (Tmin) and maximum temperature (Tmax) ranging from 2002-2012 were utilized for the forecasting. Based on the statistical evaluators used for performance evaluation which are the root mean square error and the coefficient of determination (RMSE and R²), the two models were found to be very worthy models for solar radiation forecasting. The statistical indicators show that the hybrid WT-ANFIS model’s accuracy outperforms the PSO-ANFIS model by 65% RMSE and 9% R². The results show that hybridizing the ANFIS by PSO and WT algorithms is efficient for solar radiation forecasting even though the hybrid WT-ANFIS gives more accurate results.

Abstract

Traditionally many fabless companies outsource the fabrication of IC design to the foundries, which may not be trusted always. In order to ensure trusted IC’s it is more significant to develop an efficient technique that detects the presence of hardware Trojan. This malicious insertion causes the logic variation in the nets or leaks some sensitive information from the chip, which reduces the reliability of the system. The conventional testing algorithm for generating test vectors reduces the detection sensitivity due to high process variations. In this work, we present a compressive sensing approach, which can significantly generate optimal test patterns compared to the ATPG vectors. This approach maximizes the probability of Trojan circuit activation, with a high level of Trojan detection rate. The side channel analysis such as power signatures are measured at different time stamps to isolate the Trojan effects. The effect of process noise is minimized by this power profile comparison approach, which provides high detection sensitivity for varying Trojan size and eliminates the requirement of golden chip. The proposed test generation approach is validated on ISCAS benchmark circuits, which achieves Trojan detection coverage on an average of 88.6% reduction in test length when compared to random pattern.

Abstract

Sensors are the modules or electronic devices that are used to measure and get environmental events and send the captured data to other devices, usually computer processors allocated on the cloud. One of the most recent challenges is to protect and save the privacy issues of those sensors data on the cloud sharing. In this paper, sensors data collection framework is proposed using mobile identification and proxy re-encryption model for data sharing. The proposed framework includes: identity broker server, sensors managing and monitoring applications, messages queuing sever and data repository server. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed proxy re-encryption model can work in real time.

Abstract

Distal locking procedure is one of the most complex tasks in close intramedullary nailing operation which requires fluoroscopic image to interpret 2-D distal locking position on image related to 3-D distal locking position on the patient site. Hence the surgeon has to perform the distal locking process by using multiple fluoroscopic images which causes a lot of x-ray exposure to the patient and surgeon and is a time consuming task. This paper presents the system integration of a fluoroscopic image calibration using robot assisted surgical guidance. The system integration consists of three parts; distal locking recovery, fluoroscopic calibration and tracking, and robot assisted surgical guidance. The distal locking-hole recovery algorithm is based on characteristic information of the major and minor axes of distal locking hole. The fluoroscopic calibration and tracking is modeled as pin-hole projection model to estimate a projection equation based on optical tracking system. The robot-assisted surgical guidance is developed to overlay a trajectory path using a laser beam for reducing the problem of hand – eye coordination on most surgical navigation system. We integrate each part to complete a surgical navigation system for distal locking process. The experiment of system integration is conducted to validate the accuracy of distal locking axis position and orientation. The results of the system integration shows a mean angular error of 1.10 and mean Euclidean distance in X-Y plane error of 3.65 mm.

Abstract

Software testing is considered to be one of the most important processes in software development for it verifies if the system meets the user requirements and specification. Manual testing and automated testing are two ways of conducting software testing. Automated testing gives software testers the ease to automate the process of software testing thus considered more effective when time, cost and usability are concerned. There are a wide variety of automated testing tools available, either open source or commercial. This paper provides a comparative review of features of open source and commercial testing tools that may help users to select the appropriate software testing tool based on their requirements.

Abstract

In telecommunication systems, Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors (HBTs) are used extensively due to their good electrical characteristics. The work presented in this paper aims to enhance the electrical performance of the InP / InGaAs Single Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (SHBT) in terms of the static current gain β. Silvaco’s TCAD tools were used for the simulation of the output characteristics of the studied electronic device. Initially, we used the interactive tool Deckbuild to define the simulation program and the device editor DevEdit to design the device structure, and we also used the simulator Atlas which allows the prediction of the electrical characteristics of most semiconductor devices. Because of several phenomena occuring within the electronic device SHBT, we added some physical models included in the simulator such as SRH, BBT.STD. Afterwards, we investigated the influence of doping concentrations of the base and the collector Nb and Nc on the electrical performance of the InP/InGaAs SHBT, and particularly in terms of the static current gain β. Finally, based on optimal values of the selected parameters, we have defined an optimized device that has a highest current gain β.

Abstract

Recent developments in the field of magnetic materials and power electronics, along with the availability of cheap powerful processors, have increased the adoption of brushless direct current (BLDC) motors for various applications, such as in home appliances as well as in automotive, aerospace, and medical industries. The wide adoption of this motor is due to its many advantages over other types of motors, such as high efficiency, high dynamic response, long operating life, relatively quiet operation, and higher speed ranges. This paper presents a simulation of digital sensor control of permanent magnet BLDC motor speed using the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. A closed loop speed control was developed, and different tests were conducted to evaluate the validity of the control algorithms. Results confirm the satisfactory operation of the proposed control algorithms.
