Abstract

Misbehavior detection in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) is performed to improve the traffic safety and driving accuracy. All the nodes in the VANETs communicate to each other through message logs. Malicious nodes in the VANETs can cause inevitable situation by sending message logs with tampered values. In this work, various machine learning algorithms are used to detect the primarily five types of attacks namely, constant attack, constant offset attack, random attack, random offset attack, and eventual attack. Firstly, each attack is detected by different machine learning algorithms using binary classification. Then, the new procedure is created to do the multi classification of the attacks on best chosen algorithm from different machine learning techniques. The highest accuracy in case of binary classification is obtained with Naïve Bayes (100%), decision tree (100%), and random forest (100%) in type1 attack, decision tree (100%) in type2 attack, and random forest (98.03%, 95.56%, and 95.55%) in Type4, Type8 and Type16 attack respectively. In case of new procedure for multi-classification, the highest accuracy is obtained with random forest (97.62%) technique. For this work, VeReMi dataset (a public repository for the malicious node detection in VANETs) is used.

Abstract

In the present paper, an efficient and performant nonlinear regulator is designed for the control of the pulse width modulation (PWM) voltage inverter that can be used in a standalone photovoltaic microgrid. The main objective of our control is to produce a sinusoidal voltage output signal with amplitude and frequency that are fixed by the reference signal for different loads including linear or nonlinear types. A comparative performance study of controllers based on linear and non-linear techniques such as backstepping, sliding mode, and proportional integral derivative (PID) is developed to ensure the best choice among these three types of controllers. The performance of the system is investigated and compared under various operating conditions by simulations in the MATLAB/Simulink environment to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control methods. Our investigation shows that the backstepping controller can give better performance than the sliding mode and PID controllers. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed backstepping controller are verified experimentally in terms of tracking objectives.

Abstract

In this research, we aim to use the flatness control theory to develop a useful control scheme for a single machine connected to an infinite bus (SMIB) system taking into account input magnitude and rate saturation constraints. We adopt a fourth-order nonlinear SMIB model along an exciter and a turbine governor as actuators. According to the flatness-based control strategy, first we show that the adopted nominal SMIB model is a flat system. Then, we develop a full linearizing state feedback as well as an outer integral-type loop to ensure suitable tracking performances for the power and voltage as well as the angular velocity outputs. We assume that only the angular velocity of the generator is available to be measured. So, we provide a linear Luenberger observer to estimate the remaining states of the system. Also, the saturation nonlinearities are transferred to the linear part of the system and they are canceled out using their estimations. The efficiency and usefulness of the proposed observer-controller against faults are illustrated using simulation tests in Eurostag and Matlab. The results show that the clearing critical time of the introduced methodology is larger than the classical control approaches and the proposed observer-based flatness controller exhibits over much less control energy compared to the classic IEEE controllers.

Abstract

An enhanced method for design of decenralised proportional integral (PI) controllers to control various variables of flotation columns is proposed. These columns are multivariable processes characterised by multiple interacting manipulated and controlled variables. The control of more than one variable is not an easy problem to solve as a change in a specific manipulated variable affects more than one controlled variable. Paper proposes an improved method for design of decentralized PI controllers through the introduction of decoupling of the interconnected model of the process. Decoupling the system model has proven to be an effective strategy to reduce the influence of the interactions in the closed-loop control and consistently to keep the system stable. The mathematical derivations and the algorithm of the design procedure are described in detail. The behaviour and performance of the closed-loop systems without and with the application of the decoupling method was investigated and compared through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink. The results show that the decouplers - based closed-loop system has better performance than the closed-loop system without decouplers. The highest improvement (2 to 50 times) is in the steady-state error and 1.2 to 7 times in the settling and rising time. Controllers can easily be implemented.

Abstract

In the transportation business, we aim to be cost-efficient and effective in our customer service but with the traditional transit payment system, it is not so. Lately, transit companies all over the world are moving towards superior client service, nimbleness, receptiveness to necessities that diverge at a time scale that was absurd even two decades ago. The aim of this study was to create an electronic transit payment system that will allow for full pliability and solutions functionality that Covenant Universities and Nigerian transit companies should adopt to become more effective and efficient. We achieved this with the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) smart cards and card readers aiding a computer program that was programmed using C#. In addition, the program was simple and not expensive to implement in order to eliminate the mismanagement of ticket funds, loiter paper in bus stations, and so on. Together all this became our payment system.

Abstract

The main aim of this work is to analyze the input current waveform for a single-phase induction capacitor-run motor (SIMCR) to detect the faults. Internal and external faults were applied to the SIMCR and the current was measured. An armature (broken rotor bar) and bearing faults were applied to the SIMCR. A microcontroller was used to record the motor current signal and MATLAB software was used to analyze it with the different types of fault with varying load operations. Various values of the running capacitor were used to investigate the effect of these values on the wave-current shape. Total harmonic distortion (THD) for the voltage and current was measured. A deep demonstration of the experimental results was also provided for a better understanding of the mechanisms of bearing and armature faults (broken rotor bars) and the vibration was recorded. Spectral and power analyses revealed the difference in total harmonic distortion. The proposed method in this paper can be used in various industrial applications and this technique is quite cheap and helps most of the researchers and very effectual.

Abstract

A critical problem in spectrum sensing is to create a detection algorithm and test statistics. The existing approaches employ the energy level of each channel of interest. However, this feature cannot accurately characterize the actual application of public amateur radio. The transmitted signal is not continuous and may consist only of a carrier frequency without information. This paper proposes a novel energy detection and waveform feature classification (EDWC) algorithm to detect speech signals in public frequency bands based on energy detection and supervised machine learning. The energy level, descriptive statistics, and spectral measurements of radio channels are treated as feature vectors and classifiers to determine whether the signal is speech or noise. The algorithm is validated using actual frequency modulation (FM) broadcasting and public amateur signals. The proposed EDWC algorithm's performance is evaluated in terms of training duration, classification time, and receiver operating characteristic. The simulation and experimental outcomes show that the EDWC can distinguish and classify waveform characteristics for spectrum sensing purposes, particularly for the public amateur use case. The novel technical results can detect and classify public radio frequency signals as voice signals for speech communication or just noise, which is essential and can be applied in security aspects.

Abstract

A closed loop adaptive gender-based thermal control system (AG-TCS) is designed, modelled, analysed and tested. The system has the unique feature of adapting to the surrounding environment as a function of the number of humans present and the gender ratio. The operation of the system depends on a unique interface between a radio frequency identification (RFID) device and an imaging device, both of which are correlated and interfaced to a controller. Testing of the system resulted in smooth transition and shape conversion of the response curve, which proved its adaptability. Three mathematical equations describing the internal mechanisms of the AG-TCS are presented and have been proven to optimally reflect the original statistical data covering both genders.

Abstract

The image retrieving system is used to retrieve images from the image database. Two types of Image retrieval techniques are commonly used: content-based and text-based techniques. One of the well-known image retrieval techniques that extract the images in an unsupervised way, known as the cluster-based image retrieval technique. In this cluster-based image retrieval, all visual features of an image are combined to find a better retrieval rate and precisions. The objectives of the study were to develop a new model by combining the three traits i.e., color, shape, and texture of an image. The color-shape and color-texture models were compared to a threshold value with various precision levels. A union was formed of a newly developed model with a color-shape, and color-texture model to find the retrieval rate in terms of precisions of the image retrieval system. The results were experimented on on the COREL standard database and it was found that the union of three models gives better results than the image retrieval from the individual models. The newly developed model and the union of the given models also gives better results than the existing system named cluster-based retrieval of images by unsupervised learning (CLUE).

Abstract

WiFi-based indoor positioning is widely exploited thanks to the existing WiFi infrastructure in buildings and built-in sensors in smartphones. The techniques for indoor positioning require the high-density training data to archive high accuracy with high computation complexity. In this paper, the approach for indoor positioning systems which is called the maximum convergence algorithm is proposed to find the accurate location by the strongest receiver signal in the small cluster and K nearest neighbours (KNN) of other clusters. Also, the K-mean clustering is deployed for each access point to reduce the computation complexity of the offline databases. Moreover, the pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) method and Kalman filter with the information from the received signal strength (RSS) and inertial sensors are applied to the WiFi fingerprinting to increase the efficiency of the mobile object's position. The different experiments are performed to compare the proposed algorithm with the others using KNN and PDR. The recommended framework demonstrates significant proceed based on the results. The average precision of this system can be lower than 1.02 meters when testing in the laboratory environment with an area of 7x7 m using three access points.
