Abstract

Water pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in Malaysia. The most notable occurrence of pollution happened in Selangor. Currently, there are various water quality monitoring (WQM) methods to observe the quality of water. One of the methods used is the internet of things (IoT) for wireless sensor network technology to obtain real-time data measurement. In this study, the developed WQM system is equipped with a sensor that can measure total dissolved solid (TDS) and electrical conductivity (EC). Arduino UNO was used in this system as a microcontroller to interact with the sensor. The Wi-Fi module, ESP8266, was used to transfer the collected data to ThingSpeak, which acts as a cloud to store all the data. The results showed that both sample populations can be discriminated since the p-value is greater than 0.05 in the normality test, while in the paired sample t-test, the p-value is less than 0.05. In conclusion, this research provides an easier way to monitor water quality by taking up less time at less cost, as well as being reliable in giving real-time data reading.

Abstract

The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) acts as an electrical motor mainly used in many diverse applications. The controlling of the PMSM drive is necessary due to frequent usage in various systems. The conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller’s drawbacks are overcome with fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and adopted in the PMSM drive system. In this manuscript, an efficient field-oriented control (FOC) based PMSM drive system using a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is modeled to improve the speed and torque response of the PMSM. The PMSM drive system is modeled using abc to αβ and αβ to abc transformation, 2-level space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM), AC to DC rectifier with an inverter, followed by PMSM drive, proportional integral (PI) controller along with FLC. The FLC’s improved fuzzy rule set is adopted to provide faster speed response, less % overshoot time, and minimal steady-state error of the PMSM drive system. The simulation results of speed response, torque response, speed error, and phase currents are analyzed. The FLC-based PMSM drive is compared with the conventional PID-based PMSM drive system with better improvements in performance metrics.

Abstract

Anti-resonant hollow-core fibers (AR-HCFs) have gotten a lot of interest lately because of their potential uses in different medical sensing applications. In this work, an anti-resonant THz fiber (ATF) biosensor is implemented to check for illicit drugs and identify them at airport borders. Three different unlawful medicines have been chosen for the proposed design, Cocaine, Amphetamine, and Ketamine. A novel hollow-core anti-resonant fibers (HC-ARF) Matryoshka shape sensor has been designed for detecting the illegal drugs. The proposed design shows a robust sensitivity ranging from 99.8-99.9% and shallow confinement losses compared to other articles in the same field, as the higher losses are 9.3×10-4 dB/m with cocaine. Bending loss lessens as the bending radius rises while it is still below 1 dB/cm for radius more than 10 cm. The numerical simulation outcomes displayed that the designed HC-ARF has 0.0643±0.0238 ps/THz/cm flat dispersion at 0.6-2 THz. As the first application in this field, this work will be the first published in the literature.

Abstract

The reversible logic gates are used to improve the power dissipation in modern computer applications. The floating-point numbers with reversible features are added advantage to performing complex algorithms with high-performance computations. This manuscript implements an efficient reversible floating-point arithmetic (RFPA) unit, and its performance metrics are realized in detail. The RFP adder/subtractor (A/S), RFP multiplier, and RFP divider units are designed as a part of the RFP arithmetic unit. The RFPA unit is designed by considering basic reversible gates. The mantissa part of the RFP multiplier is created using a 24x24 Wallace tree multiplier. In contrast, the reciprocal unit of the RFP divider is designed using Newton Raphson’s method. The RFPA unit and its submodules are executed in parallel by utilizing one clock cycle individually. The RFPA unit and its submodules are synthesized separately on the Vivado IDE environment and obtained the implementation results on Artix-7 field programmable gate array (FPGA). The RFPA unit utilizes only 18.44% slice look-up tables (LUTs) by consuming the 0.891 W total power on Artix-7 FPGA. The RFPA unit sub-models are compared with existing approaches with better performance metrics and chip resource utilization improvements.

Abstract

This study introduces the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique into the wireless energy harvesting K-hop relay network to increase throughput. The relays have no dedicated energy source and thus depend on energy harvested by wireless from a power beacon (PB). Recently, NOMA has been promoted as a technology with the potential to enhance connectivity, reduce latency, increase fairness amongst users, and raise spectral effectiveness compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) technology. For performance considerations, we derive exact throughput expressions for NOMA and OMA-assisted multi-hop relaying and compare the performance between the two. The obtained results are validated via Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

The tremendous growth in the availability of enormous text data from a variety of sources creates a slew of concerns and obstacles to discovering meaningful information. This advancement of technology in the digital realm has resulted in the dispersion of texts over millions of web sites. Unstructured texts are densely packed with textual information. The discovery of valuable and intriguing relationships in unstructured texts demands more computer processing. So, text mining has developed into an attractive area of study for obtaining organized and useful data. One of the purposes of this research is to discuss text pre-processing of automobile marketing domains in order to create a structured database. Regular expressions were used to extract data from unstructured vehicle advertisements, resulting in a well-organized database. We manually develop unique rule-based ways of extracting structured data from unstructured web pages. As a result of the information retrieved from these advertisements, a systematic search for certain noteworthy qualities is performed. There are numerous approaches for query recommendation, and it is vital to understand which one should be employed. Additionally, this research attempts to determine the optimal value similarity for query suggestions based on user-supplied parameters by comparing MySQL pattern matching and Jaccard similarity.

Abstract

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, monitoring for wearing masks obtains a crucial attention due to the effect of wearing masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus. This work introduces two deep learning models, the former based on pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) which called MobileNetv2, and the latter is a new CNN architecture. These two models have been used to detect masked face with three classes (correct, not correct, and no mask). The experiments conducted on benchmark dataset which is face mask detection dataset from Kaggle. Moreover, the comparison between two models is driven to evaluate the results of these two proposed models.

Abstract

Direct current (DC) shipboard power distribution system offers higher power efficiency and voltage stability compared to the alternating current (AC) systems due to lower impedance. The implementation of DC distribution system in all-electric ship seems to be worthy since the reduction of power loss and voltage drop could overcome the drawback of DC system. However, the effectiveness of DC distribution system in ship with non-electric propulsion has not been investigated yet. Unlike in an all-electric ship, electric power flow in the distribution system of a ship with mechanic propulsion is considerably lower. The study aims to provide numerical analysis of power loss and voltage drop reduction on DC distribution system that applied to a ship with mechanic propulsion. The power flow analysis is performed on a tanker ship. Contrary to the hypothesis, the results show that the DC power distribution increase the power losses about 15% compared to AC system due to the addition of rectifier and inverter. However, the voltage drops are decreased in DC distribution system. Further investigation in the other aspects should be performed before concludes whether DC distribution system is worthy to be used in the aforementioned ship.

Abstract

There are various linear and nonlinear one-dimensional partial differential equations that are the focus of this research. There are a large number of these equations that cannot be solved analytically or precisely. The evaluation of nonlinear partial differential equations, even if analytical solutions exist, may be problematic. Therefore, it may be necessary to use approximate analytical methodologies to solve these issues. As a result, a more effective and accurate approach must be investigated and analyzed. It is shown in this study that the Lagrange multiplier may be used to get an ideal value for parameters in a functional form and then used to construct an iterative series solution. Linear and nonlinear partial differential equations may both be solved using the variational iteration method (VIM) method, thanks to its high computing power and high efficiency. Decoding and analyzing possible Korteweg-De-Vries, Benjamin, and Airy equations demonstrates the method’s ability. With just a few iterations, the produced findings are very effective, precise, and convergent to the exact answer. As a result, solving nonlinear equations using VIM is regarded as a viable option.

Abstract

Over the past few years, due to the shortage of fossil fuels and their unwanted environmental impacts, the use of renewable energy has vastly increased. Among them is wind power, which has been at the center of attention as one of the most important renewable energies. Many studies have been conducted regarding wind farms with variable speeds. Among these, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) has been of utmost importance due to its capability of separately controlling the active and reactive power, reducing the nominal converter capacity, maintaining constant variable speed frequency, and improving quality. The goal of this study is to control the synchronizing and network connection to the DFIG such that when connected to the network, no pulse is seen in the torque, rotor current, or stator. The method used in this study is known as virtual torque, which is derived from direct torque control, but instead of an electromagnetic torque, we use a virtual one. To implement this method, it is only required to measure the network voltage, current, and rotor position, and changing the control algorithm from synchronizing to grid connection only includes some changes in the flux references and torque, and calculating the electromagnetic torque instead of the virtual one.
