The Effects of a Problem-Based Learning Model Aided by Mind Mapping on Self-directed Learning in Elementary School Students

Abstract

Self-directed learning in schools has not shown positive results, especially in fifth grade students. Several surveys show that they still do not have an attitude toward self-directed learning. The problem-based learning model and mind mapping respectively has characteristics that can train this attitude. So, this study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the problem-based learning model with the aid of mind mapping in increasing self-directed learning in fifth-grade elementary school students. This research design used an experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design by analyzing quantitative data on the effectiveness of the Problem-based learning model with the aid of mind mapping on the self-directed learning of elementary school students. The research sample was the fifth-grade students of Randegan Kulon I Primary Schools in Majalengka Regency as the experimental class and class V of Randegan Kulon II Primary School in Majalengka Regency as the control class. Data collection was obtained through a self-directed learning questionnaire sheet. The data obtained were analyzed using the classical completeness test, independent T-test, and N-gain test. The results showed that the Problem-based learning model assisted by mind mapping was effective in increasing the self-directed learning of students by showing: (a) the classical mastery score reached 93.75%, (b) the average score reached 81, (c) and the N-gain value reached 0 .50 in the medium category. Based on the analysis results, it was concluded that the problem-based learning model assisted by mind mapping was effective in increasing the self-directed learning of students.
Digital Based Science Learning Through a Scientific Approach in Elementary School

Abstract

The rapid development science and technology can the main key in efforts to develop students’ self-ability in the field science. The existence technological developments have a great influence on the world of education. One of them is self-ability can apply, namely the application digital literacy. This study aims to determine student activities and the effectiveness learning science with a scientific approach through digital literacy in elementary schools. This research is experimental research. The sample this study consisted of fifth grade students at SDN Bringin 01 and SDN Tambakaji 03 Ngaliyan districts, using purposive sampling technique. It is a sampling technique with certain considerations. Through it researchers in terms of the achievements and competencies students in each class. This research data using questionnaires, tests, observations, interviews. The results analysis teacher needs given digital literacy were further validated by media experts and used learning in the experimental class and control class. Student learning activities showed differences acquisition student activity scores through non-digital media with 76.4 good results, while student activities through digital literacy showed results 82.4 very good categories. The effectiveness science learning with a scientific approach through digital literacy can improve the learning outcomes experimental class with an N-Gain value 0.7366 medium criteria, while the control class with N-Gain value 0.5656 high criteria. The results study can conclude that learning science with a scientific approach through digital literacy can improve elementary school students learning outcomes. In the end, it is hoped that similar research can carried out with other materials.
Utilization of Household Waste Media in Project-Based Learning to Improve Students' Eco-literacy and Creativity

Abstract

This research is motivated by household waste that has not been managed properly so that a learning approach is needed that is built from real student activities. This study aims to analyze whether there is an improvement in students' eco-literacy and creativity. The research method used a quasi-experimental design. The experimental group was taught using the project-based learning model that used household waste in the form of used goods media and the control group was taught using the group investigation model that used household waste media. The instruments used multiple-choice test questions on eco-literacy and test questions on students' creativity on the theme of heat and its displacement. Data collection consists of the performance test. The data analysis technique used the research prerequisite tests. Meanwihle, hypothesis testing using the average difference test and the N-gain test. The average eco-literacy ability exceeds the minimum criteria, the proportion of classical completeness is more than 75%, and the average class with the utilization of household waste based on project-based learning is better than that of the class before this lesson. It can be concluded that there is an improvement in students' eco-literacy and creativity in teaching with household waste media in project-based learning.
Development of Pan Obibul (Papan Operasi Bilangan Bulat) Media to Improve Mathematic Higher Order Thinking Skills of Elementary Students in Problem Based Learning Model

Abstract

Mastery of mathematical concepts is still an obstacle for elementary school students. They still consider mathematics as an abstract concept, so it is necessary to provide learning media that can help students to master the concept well. Problem solving based media is believed to be able to help students to practice higher order thinking skills (HOTs). Therefore, Pan Obibul media was developed to train higher order thinking skills which at the same time had an impact on mastering mathematical concepts. This research aims to determine the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the Pan Obibul learning media that is implemented with the Problem Based Learning model on students' HOTS abilities. The type of research is R & D, and the research data were obtained through interviews, teacher and student needs questionnaires, validator questionnaires, teacher, and student response questionnaires, as well as pretest and posttest. The research was conducted at a public school in Wedarijaksa district, Pati Regency with a total of five schools. The results showed that the feasibility assessment by lesson material validators obtained an average percentage of 94.55% which is included in the very suitable category. The responses of teachers and students to the Pan Obibul media product trial obtained an average percentage of 85.25% and 87.5% with a very suitable category. The the mathematics HOTS abilities improvement can be known by the paired sample test and N-Gain test.In paired sample t-test, it was obtained that an average Sig (2-tailed) score 0.000 and included in effective category. The results of the N-gain test obtained the value of 0.606 and included in the high category. From those results, it can be concluded that the development of Pan Obibul media to improve the HOTS skill of elementary school students through the PBL learning approach obtained Pan Obibul media, which is valid, practical, and effective in learning mathematics.
Learning Achievement and Satisfaction in Online versus Face-to-Face Mathematics Classes: Primary Education in Bangladesh Perspective

Abstract

Both online and offline classroom environments, there are inequalities between academic performance and sanctification. The purpose of the study was to examine the extent to which online learning influence students’ academic achievement as compared to face-to-face mode in the context of primary education in Bangladesh. This study followed an explanatory mixed-method design where quantitative data was obtained by quasi-experimental design and qualitative data by semi-structured interviews. 12 teachers and 40 students of Grade- IV from JAAGO Foundation Online school of Bangladesh were treated as samples of the study. The results of the two-tailed T-test illustrate traditional face-to-face classroom learning as the more effective and qualitative study demonstrated the satisfactory level of online mathematics learning as an average. Colorful learning materials, content visualization, animated shows about mathematics, video storytelling of practicing arithmetic in real life, and some shortcomings, such as communication gaps, lack of effective evaluation, feedback, topic knowledge, and plagiarism practice, were among the qualitative findings. This research illustrates which platforms assist students in improving their academic performance and increasing teachers’ satisfaction. However, students' satisfaction with online learning and how this satisfaction affects academic achievement could be the subject of future research.
The Influence of Guided Inquiry Model Assisted by Animation Media on Science Subjects Towards Curiosity Attitude and Mastery of Science Concepts

Abstract

This research is based on a fairly low curiosity attitude towards conventional science learning. The renewal of student-centered learning (Guided Inquiry Model) with the help of animation media is needed to increase curiosity and mastery of science concepts. This research aims to find out the influence of guided inquiry models assisted by animation media to increase curiosity and mastery of the science concept of fifth-grade students in SDN 02 Bae Kudus. The design of this study used a quasi-experimental design to measure causal relationships using a non-equivalent control group design. The results of this study found that the average control class was 81.28 compared to the experimental class with an average score of 84.73. Meanwhile, using the t-test with paired samples test obtained mastery of the concept of control class Science of 85.3 in the experimental class with an average score of 85.3. It can be concluded that the guided inquiry model based on animation media is effective to improve students' curiosity attitudes so that students learn so that mastery of science concepts in experimental classes is better compared to in control classes. Furthermore, the average curiosity attitude score in the experimental class was 84.07 greater than in the control class of 78.00. So, it can be concluded that the guided inquiry model based on animation media affects the curiosity attitude toward learning science. Based on the simple linear regression analysis that the significance value of the curiosity attitude variable of 0.000 is smaller than 0.05, so it can be concluded that there is a correlation between curiosity attitudes to mastery of student science concepts.
Kebon Dalem 2 Elementary School Semarang Parenting Styles Based on Parents’ Educational Background

Abstract

Child development is strongly influenced by their family as the first environment and first source of education for the child. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of parenting style based on parents’ educational background at SD Kebon Dalem 2. This study uses qualitative method with case study approach. The subject of this study are three pairs of parents of fourth grade students at SD Kebon Dalem 2. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation method. The validity of the data was tested using the triangulation method. The result showed that parents with higher educational background (college graduates) and secondary educational background (junior and high school graduates) did not only apply one kind of parenting style. In terms of assisting academic and non-academic development, all parents apply democratic or authoritative parenting style. They supervise their children’s academic development at school, as well as provide support for their talents and interests outside of school. However, in terms of building independence, responsibility, and regulating the use of gadget, parents who are college and high school graduates apply authoritarian parenting style, resulting in their children being responsible and independent. On the contrary, parents with junior high school graduates apply permissive parenting style, resulting in the child being less responsible, less independent, and tend to use the gadget excessively. This research in expected to be able to provide inputs for parents, teachers, and school and to determine whether counseling is needed or not to improve student’s achievement.
Implementation of Character Education through Distance Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The Covid-19 emergency has caused a shift in learning. Learning activities that were previously carried out in classroom now have to be done at home or study from home. The Covid-19 Emergency Period makes students often interact with gadgets. It is predicted in the future that Gen A students have less socialization problems, less creativity and more individualistic attitude. Continuous use of gadgets also has the potential to make them socially isolated. Character education must continue during the distance learning period. The purpose of this study was to analyze the character values that can be developed in Distance Learning (PJJ) at State Islamic Elementary School Four of Boyolali Regency by implementing learning media. The research method used is field research with a qualitative approach through field observations, interviews and documentation. Data collection techniques are using observation methods, interview methods and documentation. The principals, teachers, parents, and students were involved in this research. Data data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing/verification were employed to gain the goals. The results of the research on the implementation of character education in the online learning by integrating them in the thematic learning. Planning, implementation, and evaluation approach were conducted by the teachers in distance learning model. Character values that can be developed in distance learning are religious values, nationalist values, independent values, mutual cooperation values and integrity values. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that online learning media plays an important role in developing character education through learning activities by utilizing learning media during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Effectivity of “Sinau Aksara Jawa (Sadewa)” Module in Improving Aksara Jawa Reading and Writing Skills

Abstract

According to the observation results of Javanese Language subject matter on Aksara Jawa learning materials in 3rd grade of SDN Plalangan 03, it was found that most of students have an inability to focus on the subject materials when learning Aksara Jawa that were taught by the teacher. Students are less motivated in learning aksara Jawa. The usage of learning media and resources to convey the learning material still less varied so that reading and writing skills are lessoptimum. The purpose of this research is the effectivity of Sinau Aksara Jawa (Sadewa) module in improving Aksara Jawa’s reading and writing skills. The samples of this research are 3rd grade students of SDN Plalangan 03 and SDN Pakintelan 03. The sampling that used in this research is simple random sampling. The research data were collected through a test of Aksara Jawa’s reading and writing skills. The data were analyzed through mean difference test in SPSS application that called paired sample t-test. The results of this research revealed that there is significant difference between the pretest and posttest results of reading and writing test skills using Sinau Aksara Jawa (Sadewa) module. According to the results, the working hypothesis (Ha) were accepted which means the Sinau Aksara Jawa (Sadewa) module is effective in improving the reading and writing skills of 3rd grade students.
The Android-based Interactive Pop-Up Multimedia Development to Improve Environmental Literacy, Learning Autonomy, and Learning Outcomes

Abstract

The innovation of this research developed the android-based pop-up multimedia that can help students use Android as an interactive learning medium during the learning process and interactive multimedia can be tested for feasibility. This research is an important step in providing innovation in the development of interactive pop-up multimedia based on Android and shaping changes in the form of increasing students' the environmental literacy, learning autonomy, and learning outcome of learners. The applied research type was Research & Development with the ADDIE method. The researchers promoted the research for the fifth graders of Public Primary School Sumber and MIM Tumpuk in the academic year 2021/2022. The technique for collecting data was an interview, test, questionnaire, and observation. The results showed that 1) the characteristics of the android-based pop-up interactive multimedia were the one-application packaging, the material about the water cycle, and the modest and understandable language; 2) the android-based pop-up interactive media practicability reached a percentage of 97.49% with a high criterion, 3) the android-based interactive pop-up multimedia reached a percentage of 99% with valid criterion, and 4) the android-based interactive pop-up multimedia effectiveness influenced the improvement of environmental literacy based on questionnaire data, learning autonomy based on the questionnaire and learning outcome based on test and classical accomplishment calculation with a percentage of 94%, the N-Gain score of 0.69 with moderate category. It can be concluded that the development of the android-based pop-up interactive multimedia was effective to improve the environmental literacy, learning autonomy, and learning outcome of learners.
