Abstract

And is generally known as a connector which relates parallel information or ideas. In the discourse contexts, and is used differently. This article presents the discourse functions of and as a discourse marker in the presentations made by Australian students in academic settings. It was identified that and has four different discourse functions: i) linking events within a discourse topic; ii) introducing a new topic; iii) signalling a summary; and iv) signalling a speaker’s retaking a turn.

Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating how the English teachers used language codes in their classroom. The findings of the study revealed that the teachers used Indonesian and English interchangeably, and the larger proporsion is English. The teacher made a marked switching when the introduced new information or intructionand unmarked when there was no new information or instruction introduced. The switching also might occur when they translated what they have just said, and when they introduced the interaction particles at the beginning of their utterances.  The findings of the study also revealed that the codeswitching in the classroom had pedagogical porposes. The teacher made switching for classroom management, humour, information clarification, understanding enhancedment, and content presentation.

Abstract

This article concerns with a stylistic analysis on a poem in terms of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Verbal Art Semiotics. The writing uses library research, qualitative data, documentary study, descriptive method and intrinsic-objective approach. The semantic analysis results in both automatized and foregrounded meanings. Then the automatized meaning produces lexical cohesion and in turn, it produces subject matter. Meanwhile, the foregrounded meaning produces the literary meaning and in turn, it creates theme. Finally, the analysis indicates that the subject matter is about the Duddon River which flows forever, the literary meaning is about human survival and the theme is about inspiration.

Abstract

Nowadays, young people have shown different language phenomena in their daily conversations. It sems that they are not proud to use their mother tongues anymore. This article reports the results of a research done to the English students of FBSS UNP Padang to see the profile of their language use (their bilingualism profile) at the campus. The data show that Bahasa Indonesia is the first choice to use and the mother tongues, English and other languages follow.
