Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out whether the students’ ability in writing procedure text can be increased by using the ‘Magic Back and Forth’ Media or not. So, the title of this Classroom Action Research is “Increasing Students’ Writing Ability by Using the Magic Back and Forth Media at Class IX-B SMPN 3 X Koto Singkarak”. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) and the subject of the research is 29 students of class IX-B. The research was conducted in two cycles which there were four steps for each cycle; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were collected through observation, questionaire, and conducting the test after implementing each cycle. The results of each cycle showed that the students’ writing ability can be increased by Using the ‘Magic Back and Forth’ Media. It can be seen from the result of the tests’; 71, 9 at cycle 1 and 77,7 at cycle 2. Key Words: writing ability, procedure text, magic back and forth media.

Abstract

This paper derived from the research results conducted in 2011, looks into the skill of the fourth grade English department students of STBA Haji Agus Salim Bukittinggi in constructing coherent ideas and in using coherence devices in writing descriptive essays. The students’ skill in constructing coherent ideas concerned the relevance and the order of ideas and in using coherence devices concerned the repetitions of the key words/nouns and the use of pronouns and transitional signals. The research results show that the students had weak skill in constructing coherent ideas and had low average skill in using the coherence devices. In relation to constructing coherent ideas, the relevance and the order of ideas of the students’ descriptive essays were weak. Then, in relation to the use of coherence devices, the students’ skill in repeating the key words/nouns was weak, and in using pronouns and transitional signals were high average. Therefore, the students could not achieve coherence in writing descriptive essays yet. Key words/phrases: writing descriptive essays, coherent ideas, coherence devices

Works of literature during Romantic period are totally unrelated to love, romance or attraction between men and women as widely understood. Rather they exert stress upon sense and feeling where individual freedom is highly esteemed. Abstract

This paper discuss the influence of  kaba “Malin Kundang" as a form of oral literature of the short story parody Minangkabau A.A. Navis entitled "Malin Kundang, Ibunya Durhaka" (“MKID”). The discussion carried out by using a genetic approach. Genetic approach examines how the work affects the work of others. Analysis conducted “MKID”  illustrates that the short story as a parody of the affected works of kaba "Malin Kundang" indicates a social critique of Navis toward modern society—especially the people within the scope of the author, the Minangkabau people—whom have been uprooted from its cultural roots, so that in everyday life they become materialistic and overturning of moral values and religion. In pursuit of his passion, they perform a variety of "sedition" is sometimes hard to accept common sense. World upside down in a short story in which a “MKID” mother "disobey" her and "cheating" for his worldly needs, is a portrait of a sick society, unstable, and turned upside down. Abstract

This classroom action research is aimed to improve the skills of writing short stories based KUIK through the application of sinectics model in class X SMA Negeri 1 Pemalang. The research was conducted on 37 students in class X SMA 1Pemalang. Quantitative data collection is carried out through tests to write the short stories, then it was analyzed by using descriptive analysis of the percentage. Qualitative data collection used manual observation, interviews, and documentation to uncover changes in behavior of students in the learning process. The findings showed the average value before the action research by 59.7%, and the average value of 79.4% after the action. It shows that a sinectics model can improve KUIK-based short stories writing skill by 19,7 %  in SMA Negeri 1 Pemalang students. Keyword: writing skill, KUIK, short story, sinectics model

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding the relationship between knowledge of schemata and text comprehension. It was conducted at English Department of State University of Padang on the fifth semester in the academic year of 2009/2010.There were 38 students as the sample using cluster sampling technique. The instruments used were multiple choice tests. The quantitative data were analized by using simple correlation and regression. It was found that there is a relationship between knowledge of schemata and text comprehension. It means that someone who has good knowledge of schemata will have good text comprehension. The equation is Ŷ = 13.39 + 0.95X1. Its correlation coefficient is 0.6962. The knowledge of schemata gives contribution 48.47% to text comprehension. The findings can be beneficial for the teachers as a consideration that they can help students to activate their schemata in order to get good text comprehension. Abstract

This article aims at desribing foreign language learning strategies which should be possessed by each foreign language learner because their success or failure doesn’t depend only on the lecturer’s language teaching but also very much on the foreign language learning strategies. There are a lot of foreign language learning strategies; however, at least, there are fourteen foreign language learning strategies that they should possess and apply if they really want to succeed in learning a foreign language. The strategies will be enough for foreign language learners to reach their learning targets if they can possess and apply them as well as possible in learning whatever foreign language, like English for example.  In addition to the fourteen strategies, how they will find or get them will also be presented and discussed in the article. It is advisable that a foreign language teacher or lecturer save a small amount of time of his/her teaching hours to teach those strategies, and that a learner apply them as well they can or make his/her own effort to find and apply them.
