Abstract

Power output from a small solar panel can be affected by its power consumption when it consumes power from the solar panel. There has been a lack of proper research and experiment in the use of small solar panel with tracking systems. Its significance was detailed in this paper where the voltage output are compared with those which were externally powered. The solar trackers and a microcontroller have been designed and fabricated for this research. Due to the use of the tracking system (single axis and dual axis), the power consumption varies from one to another and its effect on the voltage output. Several experiments have been conducted and it was concluded that small solar panels are not efficient enough to utilize with tracking capabilities due to an increase in power consumption. The externally powered system was found to generate 18% more output compared to a selfsustaining system and that the increase in average power consumptions compared to a fixed panel were 31.7% and 82.5% for single-axis and dualaxis tracker respectively. A concrete evidence was made that utilizing solar tracking capabilities for low power rated solar panel is unfeasible.

Abstract

In the last decades, researchers and scientists have been trending towards photovoltaic (PV) solar energy research as one of the noteworthy renewable energies. As a matter of fact, the need for a laboratory system devoted to performing measurements and experimentation on PV systems is being increased. The PV array emulator is designed to accomplish this task by reproducing accurately the electrical behavior of real PV sources. The present paper proposes thus a new control and design of PV array emulators. It is based essentially on a hybrid Damping Injection controller. The proposed control strategy circumvents obviously the existing PV emulator's limitations in terms of accuracy, speed and partial shading emulation. Several results are given and discussed to show the efficiency of the proposed system to emulate PV modules and different PV array configurations under uniform solar irradiance and partial shading conditions.

Abstract

In this paper, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for photovoltaic (PV) systems is achieved based on fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and compared with an anfis (neuro-fuzzy) based mppt controller, this method allies the abilities of artificial neural networks in learning and the power of fuzzy logic to handle imprecise data. Both methods are simulated using matlab/ simulink. The choise of power variation and the current variation as inputs of the proposed controllersreducesthe calculation. Both FLC and ANFIS based MPPTare tested in terms of steady state performance and the pv system dynamic.

Abstract

The main objective of this work is to model and simulate DC to DC Boost Converter using Single Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC) topology using MATLAB/Simulink (MLS). The output voltage is controlled by using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique. Four pairs of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) is used as the switching device where for each pair, it is located in parallel and opposite direction. Safe commutation technique is performed in preventing voltage spike at the output. Through the simulation, at switching frequency of 25kHz, the model is able to step up its input voltage about two times larger and all of the results achieved a good agreement with the principle of four quadrant operation. It is also realized that without the implementation of safe commutation technique, spikes were generated and the model is unable to boost its input voltage. All of the selected results from the analysis which includes variation of quadrant, switching frequency, duty cycle and resistive load are presented in this paper.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of static and dynamic eccentricities on the performances of flux reversal permanent magnet (FRPM) machine with even rotor pole number, i.e. FRPM machine with 12/10 stator/rotor combination. No-load and load performances of the machine are investigated under three rotor operating conditions including centricity, static eccentricity and dynamic eccentricity. The investigation has been carried out using 2D-FEA. It has been revealed that the 12/10 FRPM machine under normal operating condition has no unbalanced magnetic force, due to the even pole number of the rotor. On the other hand, such undesirable feature would be presented in the 12/10 FRPM machine as a result of the existing of static and dynamic eccentricities.  Both static and dynamic eccentric machines exhibit unbalanced three-phase flux linkage as well as back-EMF.  Moreover, three operating conditions of the investigated machine have the same fundamental cogging torque harmonic. However, low order harmonics are existed in the static and dynamic centric machines and are not found in the centric machine. Furthermore, about 16% less torque ripple delivered by the centric machine compared with both static and dynamic counterparts.

Abstract

Over recent years the photovoltaic technology has obtained significant development, especially in building integrated photovoltaic thermal (BIPVT) system. Photovoltaic thermal (PVT) air collectors are advantageous because of their efficiency. Various studies have been conducted to determine the ideal parameters of PVT air collectors. Few theoretical approach models of PVT air collector systems were used to help detect occurrences in a PVT collector system and calculate the optimal parameters. The heat transfer and energy balance of PVT air collectors were analysed and reviewed based on the model, quantity of cover, channels and forms of the collector. A mathematical model was developed to describe actual working situations and to examine new shut PVT collectors. The first law of thermodynamics is the principal equation in the model. Different analysis methods were utilised to evaluate PVT performances, which are generally based on energy and exergy analyses. This review focuses on theoretical approach model of single-pass PVT air collector.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel structure combining the port-controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) and Backstepping (BS) nonlinear control for the vector control of the six-phase induction motor (SPIM). In this new scheme, to improve the outer loop’s robustness, the BS technique using the integral tracking errors action is proposed in the speed and flux controllers design. The advantage of this proposed control law is not to increase the complexity of differential equation resolution due to being not increased system states numbers. To enhance more the performance of SPIM drives (SPIMD), port-controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) scheme is used in the inner current loop controllers. In this proposed PCH current controller, the stabilization of controller is achieved via system passivity. In that, the interconnection and damping matrix functions of PCH system are shaped so that the physical (Hamiltonian) system structure is preserved at the closed loop level and the closed loop energy function is equal to the difference between the physical energy of the system and the energy supplied by the controller. The proposed control design is based on combination PCH and BS techniques improve significantly performance and robustness. The proposed speed control scheme is validated by Matlab-Simulink software.

Abstract

The environmentally friendly wind energy conversion system has become one of the most studied branches of sustainable energy. Like many other power generator, maximum power point tracking is an easy yet effective way to boost the efficiency of the conversion system. In this research, a modified Electromagnetism-like Mechanism Algorithm (EM) is proposed for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) scheme of a micro-wind energy conversion system (WECS). In contrast with the random search steps used in a conventional EM, modified EM is enhanced with a Split, Probe, and Compare (SPC-EM) feature which ensures solutions with higher accuracies quicker by not having to scrutinize the search in details at the beginning stages of the iterations. Experiments and simulations are carried to test the SPC-EM in tracking the maximum power point under different wind profiles. Results indicate that the performance of the modified EM showed significant improvement over the conventional EM in the benchmarking. It can thus be concluded that based on the simulations, the SPC-EM performs well as an MPPT scheme in a micro-WECS.
