Abstract

Major portion of nonlinear loads in industries are contributed by variable speed drives because of their desirable features such as energy saving, smooth control, flexible operation and fast response. These electric drives introduce large amount of current and voltage harmonic distortions at the point of common coupling. These distortions are propagated throughout the system and affect all other loads connected in the system. Hence these distortions are to be mitigated with suitable harmonic filters installed near to the respective load terminals. This paper presents an effective ANN based digital controller for shunt hybrid harmonic filter to provide instantaneous harmonic and reactive compensation. The performance of the adaptive shunt hybrid filter is verified by simulation and experimental studies under steady state and dynamic conditions. The results show that it is an effective, flexible and low rated hybrid filter configuration.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v4i4.6319

Abstract

Compared to field-oriented control (FOC) system, direct torque control (DTC) system has gained attractiveness in control drive system because of its simpler control structure and faster dynamic control. However, supplying the drive system with rated flux at light load will decrease the power factor and efficiency of the system. Thus, an optimal flux has been applied during steady-state in order to maximize the efficiency of drive system. But when a torque is suddenly needed, for example during acceleration, the dynamic of the torque response would be degraded and it is not suitable for electric vehicle (EV) applications. Therefore, a modification to the voltage vector as well as look-up table has been proposed in order to improve the performance of torque response.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v4i4.6918

Abstract

This paper presents a framework to carry out a simulation to tune the speed controller gains for known input of DC drive system. The objective is to find the optimal controller gains (proportional and integral) in a closed loop system. Various performance indices have been considered as optimal criterion in this work. The optimal gain values have been obtained by conventional and Genetic Algorithm (GA) based optimization methods. The study has been conducted on a simulink model of three phase converter controlled direct current (DC) drive with current and speed control strategy. Abstract

The supply water in remote areas of windy region is one of most attractive application of wind energy conversion .This paper proposes an advanced controller suitable for wind-electric pump in isolated applications in order to have a desired debit from variation of reference speed of the pump also the control scheme of DC voltage of SIEG for feed the pump are presented under step change in wind speed. Abstract

The conventional Direct Torque Control (DTC) is known to produce a quick and robust response in AC drives. However, during steady state, stator flux and electromagnetic torque which results in incorrect speed estimations and acoustical noise. A modified Direct Torque Control (DTC) by using Space Vector Modulation (DTC-SVM) for induction machine is proposed in this paper. Using this control strategy, the ripples introduced in torque and flux are reduced. This paper presents a novel approach to design and implementation of a high perfromane torque control (DTC-SVM) of induction machine using Field Programmable gate array (FPGA).The performance of the proposed control scheme is evaluated through digital simulation using Matlab\Simulink and Xilinx System Generator. Abstract

Renewable power generation using photovoltaic is very interesting to be developed to deal with the problems of conventional energy sources and environmental issues. The photovoltaic power generation can operate both in stand-alone and grid-connected operations. This paper presents an application of the five-level common-emitter current-source inverter (CE-CSI) for grid connected photovoltaic system without batteries as energy storage system. In the proposed system, the five-level CE-CSI works generating a sinusoidal output current from photovoltaic system to be injected into the power grid. The transformer is used in the system to step-down the grid voltage to meet the voltage level of the photovoltaic system, and also works as a galvanic insulation between the power grid and the inverter system. Two conditions of the power grid voltage, i.e. a pure sinusoidal and a distorted power grid, are tested through computer simulation using PSIM software. Furthermore, experimental test result of the five-level inverter is also presented. The test results show that the five-level CE-CSI works well injecting a sinusoidal current into the power grid with low harmonic contents, and with unity power factor operation. The results also show that the distorted grid voltage affects the harmonic contents of the current injected by the inverter.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v4i4.6464

Abstract

In this paper, decouple PI control for output active and reactive powers which is the common control technique for power converter of Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is presented. But there are some disadvantages with this control method like uncertainty about the exact model, behavior of some parameters or unpredictable wind speed and tuning of PI parameters. To overcome the mentioned disadvantages a fuzzy logic control of DFIG wind turbine is presented and is compared with PI controller. To validate the proposed scheme, simulation results are presented, these results showed that the performance of fuzzy control of DFIG is excellent and it improves power quality and stability of wind turbine compared to PI controller. The Fuzzy logic controller is applied to rotor side converter for active power control and voltage regulation of wind turbine. The entire work is carried out in MATLab/Simulink. Different faulty operating conditions are considered to prove the effective implementation of the proposed control scheme.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v4i4.5966
