Power Factor Correction (PFC) has become one of the most active research areas in the field of power electronics due to the surplus power required for various industrial applications around the world. In this work, a novel SEPIC converter with the Tapped Inductor model operating in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (TI-SEPIC- DCM) is proposed for PFC. The proposed TI-SEPIC-DCM improves the voltage gain through voltage multiplier cell and charge pump circuit. The voltage multiplier cell also helps in attaining the Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) and Zero-Current Switching (ZCS), which results in higher switching frequency and size reduction. Moreover, a third order harmonic reduction control loop has been proposed for better harmonic mitigation. The proposed work has been simulated in MATLAB and the results are obtained to validate the significance of the proposed TI-SEPIC- DCM with near unity power factor and reduced harmonics.

Power converter operations and efficiency is affected by variation in supply voltage, loads current, circuit elements, ageing and temperature. To meet the objective of tight voltage regulation, power converters circuit module and the control unit must be robust to reject disturbances arising from supply, load variation and changes in circuit elements. PID controller has been the most widely used in power converter control. This paper presents studies of robustness of PID controller tuning methods to step changes in the set point and disturbance rejection in power converter control. A DC-DC boost converter was modelled using averaged state-space mothod and PID controllers were designed with five different tuning methods. The study reveals the transient response and disturbance rejection capability of each tuning methods for their suitability in power supply design applications.

This paper introduces a new method to track the saliency of an AC motor fed by a multilevel converter through measuring the dynamic current response of the motor line currents due the IGBT switching actions. The method uses only the fundamental PWM waveform (i.e there is no modification to the operation of the multilevel converter) similar to the fundamental PWM method proposed for a 2-level converter. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the complete sensorless speed control of a PM motor driven by such a converter over a wide speed range. Finally the paper introduces a comparison between the 2-level converter and the multilevel converter in terms of the reduction of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) using the fundamental PWM method in both cases.

In this paper, enhanced field oriented control technique (EFOC) was adopted in Rotor Side Control (RSC) of DFIG converter for improved response during severe faults. The work is intended to damp pulsations in electromagnetic torque, improve voltage mitigation and limit surge currents and to enhance the operation of DFIG during voltage sags. The converter topology uses a battery energy storage system with capacitor storage system to further enhance operation of DFIG during faults. The battery and capacitor system in coordination provide additional real and reactive power support during faults and nearly constant voltage profile at stator and rotor terminals and limit overcurrents. For EFOC technique, rotor flux reference changes its value from synchronous speed to zero during fault for injecting current at the rotor slip frequency. In this process DC-Offset component of flux is controlled, decomposition during overvoltage faults. The offset decomposition of flux will be oscillatory in a conventional FOC, whereas in EFOC it will damp quickly. A comparison is made with proposed methodology with battery energy storage system and a conventional system. Later the system performance with under voltage of 50% the rated voltage with fault at PCC during 0.8 to 1.2 seconds is analysed using simulation studies.

This paper investigates an approach to reduce the injection of unwanted harmonics from the input side power source. The proposed work finds an application of a suitably designed Low Pass Filter (LPF) for harmonics reduction. The Low Pass Filter is incorporated in between the input power source and high frequency current source fed single switch parallel quasi-resonant inverter of a domestic Induction Heater. The inverter has an Insulated Gate Bipolar Junction Transistor (IGBT) switch. Undesirable harmonics injection to the input power source makes voltage and current waveforms non-sinusoidal. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis has been applied to study the effect of harmonics in frequency domain. The entire system is realized in Power System Simulator (PSIM) environment. It is finally proved that the proposed filter reduces the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and the Distortion Factor (DF) of the input current. It is also proved that the proposed Low Pass Filter can make the input power factor closer to unity.

Brushless dc motor still suffers from commutation torque ripple, which primarily depends on transient line current in the commutation interval. In order to control the incoming and outgoing phase currents to change at the same rate during commutation, this paper presents a novel high boost ratio DC-DC circuit topology in the front end of the inverter. With a suitable closed loop control scheme, the proposed high boost ratio DC-DC converter is operated with two different duty ratios one during commutation period and the other during non commutation period. The cause of commutation ripple is analyzed, and the way to adjust the duty ratio for obtaining the desired dc link voltage is introduced in detail. Finally, simulation and experimental results show that, compared with the existing dc–dc converter topologies, the proposed method can obtain the desired voltage much faster and minimize commutation torque ripple more efficiently

Selective harmonic elimination (SHE) has been a widely researched alternative to traditional PWM techniques. This paper presents the selective harmonic elimination of a uniform step asymmetrical multilevel inverter (USAMI) using genetic algorithm (GA) which eliminates specified higher order harmonics while maintaining the required fundamental voltage. This technique can be applied to USAMI with any number of levels. As an example, in this paper a 9-level USAMI is considered and the optimum switching angles are calculated to eliminate the 5th, 7th and 11th harmonics.

This paper proposes a switching control for a cascaded H-bridge inverter structure with reduced switches which is used to improve the THD performance of a single phase five level CHB MLI. The multi level inverter is simulated for the conventional carrier overlapping APOD and the proposed carrier overlapping APOD Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) switching control technique. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltages are observed for both PWM control techniques. The performance of the symmetric CHB MLI is simulated using MATLAB-SIMULINK. It is observed that the proposed carrier overlapping APODPWM provides output with relatively low THD as compared to the conventional carrier overlapping APODPWM.

This paper presents an investigation of seven level cascaded H-bridge (CHB) inverter in power system for compensation of harmonics.For power quality control a Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) giving comparatively better harmonic reduction than the conventional controllers. Harmonic distortion is the most important power quality problem stirring in multilevel inverter, the harmonics can be eliminated by an optimal selection of switching angles. A hybrid evaluation technique evaluates the obtained optimal switching angles that are attained from the fuzzy inference system as well as neural network. The proposed method will be implemented in MATLAB working platform and the harmonic elimination performance will be evaluated.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a non-contact power transfer within a distance. With the advantage of not-contact concept, WPT enhances the flexibility movement of the devices. Basically, there are three types of the WPT which are inductive power transfer (IPT), Capacitive Power Transfer (CPT) and Acoustic Power Transfer (APT). Among these, capacitive power transfer (CPT) has the advantages of confining electric field between coupled plates, metal penetration ability and also the simplicity in circuit topologies. Therefore, we focus on the capacitive method in this paper. To be specific, this paper aims to develop a wireless mouse charging system using capacitive based method. This method enables wireless power transmission from mouse pad to a wireless mouse. Hence, no battery requires to power up the mouse. In this paper, a high efficiency Class-E converter is described in details to convert the DC source to AC and the compensation circuit of resonant tank is also proposed at the transmitter side in order to improve the efficiency. In the end, a prototype is developed to prove the developed method. The performances analysis of the developed prototype is discussed and the future recommendation of this technique is also presented.
