The use of a new control method for grid-connected inverters for reducing the output current harmonic distortion in a wide range of grid-connected distributed generation (DG) applications, including wind turbine (WT) and fuel cell (FC) inverters is proposed in this paper. The control method designed to eliminate main harmonics in a microgrid (MG) and between MG and point of common coupling (PCC) and responsible for the correction of the system unbalance. Another advantage of the proposed control method is that it can be easily adopted into the DG control system without the installation of extra hardware. The proposed control method is comprised of the synchronous reference frame method (SRF). Results from the proposed control method are provided to show the feasibility of the proposed approach.

In order to maximize the electric energy production of a photovoltaic generator (PVG), the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods are usually used in photovoltaic systems. The principle of these techniques is to operate the PVG to the maximum power point (MPP), which depends on the environmental factors, such as solar irradiance and ambient temperature, ensuring the optimal power transfer between PVG and load. In this paper, we present the implementation of two digital MPPT commands using the Arduino Mega type. The two proposed MPPT controls are based on the algorithm of perturb and observe (P&O), the first one with fixed perturbation step and the second one with two perturbations step varying with some conditions. The experimental results show that the P&O algorithm with variable step perturbation gives good results compared to the P&O algorithm with fixed perturbation step in terms of the time response and the oscillations around the MPP.

This paper proposes an Active Power Filter (APF) system which utilizes a five-level nonconventional Cross-Connected Source Multilevel Inverter (CCSMI) with a modified Unified Constant-Frequency Integration (UCI) control. The CCSMI consists of six power switches which can produce five output voltage levels. With the use of the CCSMI, the parts count is reduced with equivalent or better performance compared to the use of conventional multilevel inverters. The capability of the proposed system is tested using three types of nonlinear loads with different characteristics. The APF system is simulated under steady-state condition using MATLAB/Simulink. The results obtained show improvement in the supply current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) with room for enhancement, using the proposed APF system.

The air streams from the outlet of an air compressor can be used to generate electricity. For instance, if a micro-sized Vertical-Axis Wind-Turbine (VAWT) is installed towards the airflow, some amount of electricity can be generated before being stored in a battery bank. The research’s objectives are to design, fabricate and analyze the performance of Helical Savonius VAWT blade rotors, which is tested with and without using a wind concentrator. The Helical Savonius VAWT is tested at 0 cm without the concentrator, whereas the blade rotor is tested at concave-blade position when using the concentrator. The blade and the wind concentrator designs were based on the dimensions and the constant airflow of the air compressor. The findings suggested that the blade produced its best performance when tested using wind concentrator at concave-blade position in terms of angular speed (ω), tip speed ratio (TSR) and the generated electrical power (PE). The findings concluded that the addition of wind concentrator increases the airflow which then provided better performances on the blades.

This paper presents an extension work on the application of interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based controller (IDA-PBC) from the conventional H-bridge inverter to a 5-level Cascaded H-bridge Multilevel Inverter (CHMI). With the controller, the inductor current and the voltage capacitor track the desired reference of the inverter to ensure that the output voltage maintains its regulation while the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is kept at low levels with fast transient response. It is designed based on the Port-Control Hamiltonian theory exploiting the dissipation properties of the averaged model of inverter circuits. The results obtained have proven that the IDA-PBC previously developed for the H-bridge inverter can be easily extended and applied to the CHMI circuit. The simulation results showed that the IDA-PBC is able to maintain the output voltage regulation in both circuits in the case of no-load to full-load condition, load uncertainty, and structural uncertainty while maintaining THD of less than 5%. However, in all cases, CHMI has shown better performance in terms of THD percentage and transient response compared to the H-bridge inverter, which are 290 µs and 150 µs respectively.

Permanent magnet flux switching machine (PMFSM) is a joint venture of switch reluctance machine (SRM) and permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM). It has become a prominent research topic for various applications because of robust rotor structure, high torque and power densities but few were developed for downhole applications mainly due to harsh environmental conditions. Formerly, most of developed PMFSMs for downhole applications were mainly concentrated on inner-rotor type design, and difficult to find research work on outer-rotor configuration. Therefore, this paper introduces the design and investigation of PMFSM with outer-rotor configuration for downhole application. Primarily, the geometric topology of proposed design is described in detail. Then, the no load and load analysis are implemented in order to investigate the initial performance of the proposed design.

Quasi-Z-Source Inverter (QZSI) has introduced a new wave of interest in engineering industry and research. Reduction in device rating has been the main objective in introducing QZSI topologies. The introduced topologies in QZSI have proven to be feasible in a wide range for high power with medium voltage applications. This paper mainly focuses on QZSI topologies with continuous input current conduction and also power conditioning in the renewable energy system. Based on a detailed comparison of these topologies suitable QZSI can be arrived for a given application.

Quadrotor is one of rotary wing UAV types which is able to perform a hover position. In order to take off, landing, and hover, it needs controllers. Conventional controllers have been widely applied in quadrotor, yet they have drawbacks namely overshoot. This paper presents attitude and altitude control algorithm in order to obtain a response as quadrotor hovered optimally within minimum overshoot, rise time, and settling time. The algorithm used is Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) algorithm with Mamdani method. By using the algorithm, the quadrotor is able to hover with minimum overshoot and maximum rise time. The advantage of the algorithm is that it does not require linearization model of the quadrotor.

This paper presents a new single switched inductor- capacitor coupled transformer-less high gain DC-DC converter which can be used in renewable energy sources like PV, fuel cell in which the low DC output voltage is to be converted into high dc output voltage. With the varying low input voltages, the output of DC-DC converter remains same and does not change. A state space model of the converter is also presented in the paper. This constant output voltage is obtained by close loop control of converter using PID controller. High voltage gain of 10 is obtained without use of transformer. All the simulations are done in MATLAB-SIMULINK environment.

The article gives the experimental results of the processes occurring in the combined system of traction and magnetic suspension, which was implemented on the basis of the linear switched reluctance motor. The goal of the research is to examine the possibility to combine the levitation and traction functions within one unit. The full- function physical model of the transport system with the magnetic suspension has been produced for experimental verification of the development concept for the combined system of traction and magnetic suspension. The research tests have been performed at the track structure with the limited length in order to study the processes, occurring in the most complicated start-up mode, when the discrete behavior of current in windings has the disturbance effect on the object levitation. The oscillograms of electromechanical transition processes, showing the mutual influence of traction subsystems and a suspension, are provided. The results of researches have illustrated dramatically that the development concept of the combined system of traction and magnetic suspension, based on the linear switched reluctance motor, is absolutely real. Further researches should be aimed at improving the system characteristics by reducing the mutual influence of levitation and traction processes.
