Abstract

The Green Energy sources (solar, wind) are performing a vigorous role to reach the electrical power demand. Due to the presence of non-linear loads, reactive loads in the distribution system and the injection of wind power into the grid integrated system results power quality issues like current harmonics, voltage fluctuations, reactive power demand etc. This paper mainly investigates the designing and satisfactory performance evaluation of solar farm as PV-STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) for enhancement of power quality in grid tie system by using MATLAB environment (Simulink). The proportional and integral (PI) Controller and Hysteresis Current Controller (HCC) were effectively utilized to inject the desired current from voltage source converter (VSC) based PV-STATCOM at PCC for the mitigation of quality related problems in the proposed test system.

Abstract

This paper proposes a long-stroke linear switched reluctance machine (LSRM) with a primary and a secondary translator for industrial conveyance applications. The secondary one can translate according to the primary one so that linear compound motions can be achieved. Considering the fact that either one translator imposes a time-variant, nonlinear disturbance onto the other, the self-tuning position controllers are implemented for the compound machine and experimental results demonstrate that the absolute steady-state error values can fall into 0.03 mm and 0.05 mm for the secondary and primary translator, respectively. A composite absolute precision of less than 0.6 mm can be achieved under the proposed control strategy.

Abstract

This paper presents a phase shifted series resonant converter with step up high frequency transformer to achieve the functions of high output voltage, high power density and wide range of Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS). In this approach, the output voltage is controlled by varying the switching frequency. The controller has been designed to achieve a good stability under different load conditions. The converter will react to the load variation by varying its switching frequency to satisfy the output voltage requirements. Therefore in order to maintain constant output voltage, for light load (50% of the load), the switching frequency will be decreased to meet the desired output, while for the full load (100%) conditions, the switching frequency will be increased. Since the controlled switching frequency is limited by the range between the higher and lower resonant frequencies , the switches can be turned on under ZVS. In this study, a laboratory experiment has been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the system performance.

Abstract

This paper proposes an improvement of the direct power control (DPC) scheme of a grid connected three phase voltage source inverter based on artificial neural networks (ANN) and fuzzy logic (FL) techniques for the renewable energy applications. This advanced control strategy is based on two intelligent operations, the first one is the replacement of the conventional switching table of a three phase voltage source inverter (VSI) by a selector based on artificial neural networks approach, and the second one is the replacement of the hysteresis comparators by fuzzy logic controllers for the instantaneous active and reactive power errors. These operations enable to reduce the power ripples, the harmonic disturbances and increase the response time period of the system. Finally, the simulation results were obtained by Matlab/Simulink environment, under a unity power factor (UPF). These results verify the transient performances, the validity and the efficiency of the proposed DPC scheme.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel simplied PWM technique to drive switched capacitor type multi-level inverter fed from isolated type DC-DC converter for distributed generation. Distributed generation (DG) is renowned power generation at point of utility with no environmental aects and reduces transmission line losses. Photo-voltaic system is considered as renewable energy source for DG and the low voltage from PV system is boosted to required voltage using an isolated type single-input multi-output (SIMO) DC-DC converter. DC output from isolated SIMO DC-DC converter is fed to switched capacitor type multi-level inverter (SC-MLI) to feed the AC load. Isolated SIMO DC-DC converter apart from boosting the DG output voltage, also eliminates the problem of voltage unbalancing in SC-MLI topology. Closed loop operation of SIMO DC-DC converter employs only single PI controller instead of three controllers was presented in this paper. Modes of operation of SC-MLI and Novel PWM switching pattern was explained. Simulation of proposed system was developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The prototype was developed for the proposed system and hardware results are also shown.

Abstract

Direct Torque Control (DTC) is widely applied for ac motor drives as it offers high performance torque control with a simple control strategy. However, conventional DTC poses some disadvantages especially in term of variable switching frequency and large torque ripple due to the utilization of torque hysteresis controller. Other than that, performance of conventional DTC fed by two-level inverter is also restricted by the limited numbers of voltage vectors which lead to inappropriate selection of voltage vectors for different speed operations. This research aims to propose a Constant Switching Frequency (CSF) torque controller for DTC of induction motor (IM) fed by three-level Neutral-Point Clamped (NPC) inverter. The proposed torque controller utilizes PI controller which apply different gain for different speed operation. Besides, the utilization of NPC inverter provides greater number of voltage vectors which allow appropriate selection of voltage vectors for different operating condition. Using the proposed method, the improvement of DTC drives in term of producing a constant switching operation and minimizing torque ripple are achieved and validated via experimental results.

Abstract

Power Quality development using PV based boost cascaded inverter system is one of the reliable methods. This paper handle with modeling and fuzzy logic control of boost to boost cascaded three phase inverter system with PV as source. MATLAB simulink model for BBCIS has been developed using the elements of simulink and cascaded loop investigations are performed with PI and Fuzzy Logic Controllers. The dynamic responses of the above systems are compared in terms of time domain parameters. The consequences point to that maximum power is obtained with minimum THD using FLC.

Abstract

Inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) faults on the induction machine has received much attention in the recent years. Early detection of such faults in wind turbine systems would allow to avoid fluctuation on wind power output and maintain the reliability level. In this paper, Sliding Mode Observers (SMO)-based fault detection and isolation method is developed for induction generator (IG)-based variable-speed grid-connected wind turbines. Firstly, the dynamic model of the wind turbine and IG was given and then, the control was made based on Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) method. The IG closed-loop via Indirect Rotor Flux Oriented Control (IRFOC) scheme was also described. Hence, the performance of the wind turbine system and the stability of injected power to the grid were analyzed under the ITSC fault conditions. The control schemes were proved to be inherently unstable under the faulty conditions. Then, robust SMO were investigated to design an ITSC fault detection and isolation scheme. Finally, simulation results of ITSC detection and isolation in the variable-speed grid-connected wind turbine with affected IG confirm the theoretical development.

Abstract

A control strategy for overmodulation operation of direct torque control hysteresis based in induction machine is proposed. The strategy is to extend the constant torque region as well as to improve the torque capability. The proposed overmodulation strategy is different to SVM based system where the reference stator voltage is available. In order for DTC hysteresis based system to be able to achieve that, several modifications have been applied so that the proposed overmodulation can be achieved by gradually transforming the PWM voltage waveform to six-step mode. Simulated results were provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the strategy.
