Abstract

This paper presents a study concerning a sensorless vector control of an induction machine fed by a voltage source inverter. The aim is to provide a scheme to control the speed and the rotor flux using a sensorless integral backstepping control approach. The rotor speed estimation is done by an observer using the model reference adaptive system (MRAS) technique whereas the nonlinear backstepping observer is used to get the rotor flux. The main objective is to achieve a robust control, adaptive and efficient, which will allow us to test and evaluate the performance of the proposed observer, combined with a sensorless control of the induction machine. Tests and validation are done using numerical simulations with MATLAB/SIMULINK-PSB (Power System Block set) toolbox. The results show good performance in terms of robustness regarding machine parameter variations and show the excellent quality of the control law associated with the observer, despite the observability problems when the machine operates at low speed.

Abstract

In this paper, the performance of a free-piston generator system with tubular single-phase stator winding is investigated for three different configurations of permanent magnet arrays on the mover: radial, rectangular quasi-Halbach and trapezoidal quasi-Halbach arrays. The optimal shape of the rectangular quasi-Halbach magnetization is obtained by employing an optimization technique called Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA), and the results are compared with the previously developed permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG) with magnets of radial magnetization. Then, the resultant design of rectangular quasi-Halbach array, is changed to trapezoidal quasi-Halbach array and its performance is compared with other types of magnet arrays. The employed ICA is based on the analytical model of the magnetic flux distribution in air-gap, and is further verified by a nonlinear transient finite element (FE) model. The FE model has been developed to study the performance of the reciprocating PMLG. The accuracy of the proposed FE model is exemplified by comparing the calculated results with the experimental ones regarding the PMLG with radial magnetization.

Abstract

The paper presents the complete modeling and control strategy of variable speed wind turbine system (WTS) driven doubly fed induction generators (DFIG). A back-to-back converter is employed for the power conversion exchanged between DFIG and grid. The wind turbine is operated at the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode its maximum efficiency. Direct power control (DPC) based on selecting of the appropriate rotor voltage vectors and the errors of the active and reactive power, the control strategy of rotor side converter combines the technique of MPPT and direct power control. In the control system of the grid side converter the direct power control has been used to maintain a constant DC-Link voltage, and the reactive power is set to 0. Simulations results using MATLAB/SIMULINK are presented and discussed on a 1.5MW DFIG wind generation system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop and research a new method of reactive power compensation in industrial grid via high-power adjustable speed drives (HP ASDs) with medium voltage (MV) three level neutral point clamped back-to-back (3L-NPC BtB) converters. The article is concerned with the mathematical description, control system designing and obtaining of experimental results. An important advantage of the new method is that specialized equipment is not necessary for its implementation. The analysis of our experimental research shows that the developed reactive power compensation method has been successfully applied for main HP ASD of plate mill rolling state 5000 (Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, PJSC). Some ways for future industrial application prospects and improvements of the designed method are outlined in the conclusion of the paper.

Abstract

Multilevel inverters (MLI) are becoming more popular over the years for medium and high power applications because of its significant merits over two level inverters. This paper presents an implementation of multicarrier based sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique for three phase seven level diode clamped multilevel inverter.  This topology is operated under phase opposition disposition pulse width modulation technique. The performance of three phase seven level diode clamped inverter is analyzed for induction motor (IM) load.  Simulation is performed using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the operation of the diode clamped multilevel inverter using field programmable gate array.

Abstract

The fins collector design for solar thermal has widely been used and it has a higher thermal efficiency than without Fins. Photovoltaic thermal (PV/T) system produced Electrical and thermal energy instantaneously. Mathematical modeling based on steady-state thermal analysis of PV/T system with and without fins was conducted with matrix inversion method. The value results show that the PV/T system with fins collector is higher thermal and electrical efficiency than without fins.

Abstract

Fault detection and classification in UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller) integrated transmission line using single terminal based DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) is proposed. The current is extracted from the sending end bus and processed through wavelet transform to evaluate the spectral energy (SE) using db4 mother wavelet. Three level decomposition is framed to extract the fundamental frequency component from non-stationary signal, considering sampling frequency of 2kHz system. The fundamental frequency component of respective phase currents are used to compute SE at sending end. The SE of individual phase current is the key factor for deciding the fault pattern detection and classification. The advantage of using this it requires less cost and protect entire transmission line with minimal fault detection time. The various types of fault (L-G, L-L, L-L-G, L-L-L) are simulated by considering the parameter like fault resistance, source impedance, fault inception angle, multi-location fault, reverse power flow and UPFC system parameter. The scheme works reliable and efficient to detect and classify the fault within a cycle of sample period 40 or a cycle of time period 20ms compared to other conventional relaying scheme.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to propose a modified Single Ended Primary Inductance converter topology with passive lossless snubber cell to achieve Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) of the device near turn off and Zero Current Switching (ZCS) near turn on. By using the snubber cell effectively with the converter reduces the switching stress by restricting the large variations in voltage and current. The detailed analysis of the circuit with relevant waveforms of the circuit is described. The circuit is designed for a load of 100W at 12V output from an input source ranging between 20-30V. The circuit is modelled in MATLAB Simulink platform and the parameters are compared with conventional circuit. From the results it is shown that the proposed circuit operates at a lesser voltage stress and at higher efficiency than conventional one.

Abstract

In this paper, an improved proportional integral stator resistance estimation for a direct torque controlled induction motor is proposed. This estimation method is based on an on-line stator resistance correction regarding the variations of the stator current estimation error. In fact, the input variable of the PI estimator is the stator current estimation error. The main idea is to tune accurately the stator resistance value relatively to the evolution of the stator current estimation error gradient to avoid the drive instability and ensure the tracking of the actual value of the stator resistance. But there is an unavoidable steady state error between the filtered stator current modulus and its estimated value from the dq model of the machine which is due to pseudo random commutations of the inverter switches. An offset has been introduced in order to overcome this problem, for different speed command values and load torques. Simulation results show that the proposed estimator was able to successfully track the actual value of the stator resistance for different operating conditions

Abstract

In this paper, a combination ANN/Fuzzy technique is used to design a Novel Fuzzy Single Neuron PID (NFSNPID) controller to achieve high performance brushless DC motor. The design steps include two parts. The first part uses the genetic algorithm (GA) to find the optimum parameters of Single Neuron PID (SNPID) controller, while the former deals with the design of fuzzy logic control to update the weights of SNPID control online. To demonstrate the designed controller effectiveness, a comparative study is made with between the NFSNPID, Conventional Fuzzy Single Neuron PID CFSNPID and SNPID. All controllers were used to drive, separately, the brushless DC motor against the sudden change of load and operating speed. The performed simulations show better results that motivate for further investigations.
