Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum has just been implemented to resolve Indonesia's long-standing educational issues, specifically the inability of Indonesian students to comprehend simple reading and apply basic math concepts. The two main points highlighted in the Merdeka curriculum are the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (Projek Penguatan Profile Pelajar Pancasila (P5)  and Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL). In order to fulfill the TaRL aspect, differentiated learning is adopted which emphasizes the student-centered learning process and accommodates the different needs of students. This study aims to look at the perceptions of students regarding the implementation of differentiated learning in English language learning. The population of this study were 235 students in tenth grade at SMA Negeri 1 Tilatang Kamang. The samples were 65 students who were randomly selected using cluster random sampling. Descriptive quantitative was used to analyze and describe the questionnaire data. The finding shows (1) learning environment is an important aspect in the successful implementation of differentiated learning strategies in learning English (2) students learn better when given the freedom to learn based on their individual learning profiles (learning styles), learning readiness (abilities), and interests. In conclusion, differentiating content, process, product, and learning environment is an effective and fun learning strategies for students.

Abstract

This research aimed to examine teachers’ perception of using audio and video for listening, students’ perception about using audio and video, also teachers’ difficulties in teaching listening using audio and video. This study used a descriptive qualitative methodology. For this study, the author applied a questionnaire and interview, with 16 statements for the questionnaire and 8 main questions for the interview. The participants were 72 students and three teachers of SMA Adabiah 2 Padang. According to the research's findings, students believed that the use of video is better than the use of audio. Video helped them more in learning listening, because it has visual cue, pictures, sound, and sometimes subtitles. Student thought that they understand the listening material better in video forms. Related to motivation and interest, students also felt that video makes them more enthusiastic in learning. Along with it, they believed that video improves their listening comprehension. The researcher found that teacher that teachers' perceptions substantially influenced their instructional techniques and the choice of the materials that the pupils will learn. It is thought to be crucial to recognize the opinions of educators because it is essential knowledge to build international language instruction. However, from the findings, it can be concluded that most of the English teachers used audio for teaching listening regularly. It is effective for the learning and easy to prepare or use.

Abstract

Motivation is very important and affects students' ability to learn English. This study aims to find out how students' motivation in learning English after the pandemic and what motivates students’ to learn English after the pandemic. In this case, students’ are encouraged to express their feelings. This research used a quantitative descriptive approach. In this research, the researcher focus on 72 students’ from MAN 2 Kota Padang. This study used observation and questionnaires. Based on data analysis, it was found that students’ motivation after the pandemic increased. This is concluded from 2 indicators of motivation that have been observed. The percentage of each aspect is high. After the pandemic, students are pleased with their English learning experience and more motivated to learn the English language after pandemic.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of EXO OLO Task learning model on students’ achievement in English learning. Participants in this study are science eleventh graders at SMAN 1 Kamang Magek. There are 42 students and classified into two classes. The control group is XI MIPA 1. This class consists of 21 students. The experimental group is XI MIPA 2, consists of 21 students. In this study, the researcher employed total sampling. The study was conducted over eight meetings and the experimental class chosen was XI MIPA 2. The essay test was used as the primary data collection tool. The dataset initially comprised 23 questions. However, during the validity and reliability assessments, three questions were identified as invalid and subsequently revised by the researcher. The two-tailed t-test result indicated a significance value of 0.000, meaning the significance value was below 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis H0 could not be accepted and the alternative hypothesis H1 could be accepted. This indicates an enhancement in students' English learning outcomes through the utilization of the EXO OLO Task learning model.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aimed to find out the cognitive levels of reading comprehension questions found in English textbooks “Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress” and “Pathway to English” and to investigate English teachers’ opinions on the cognitive levels of Barrett’s taxonomy. There are five levels in this taxonomy which are literal comprehension, reorganization, inferential comprehension, evaluation, and appreciation. The instruments of this research were a checklist table and a semi-structured interview. The result of the analysis showed that there were 117 questions (27%) for the literal comprehension level, 98 questions (22%) for the reorganization level, 176 questions (40%) for inferential comprehension level, 25 questions (6%) for evaluation level, and 21 questions (5%) categorized into appreciation level. The percentages of cognitive levels in the textbooks did not meet the recommended proportion. From the interview result, it was found that the English teachers considered Barrett’s taxonomy as the suitable and practical framework to analyse the cognitive levels of reading comprehension questions. The teachers also stated that Barrett’s taxonomy aligns with Merdeka’s curriculum objectives.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze spoken language topics needed and spoken utterances used by people in hotel industry for English for Hotel and Tourism course at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. They were analyzed based on target situation in hotel industry namely, asking and giving information, handling complaints, asking for service, and handling service by phone. This research used a descriptive qualitative research. This research chose 44 front office department staffs, 42 housekeeping department staffs, and 49 food and beverage department staffs from 4 and 5 star hotels in Padang as the sample. The hotel staffs are from The Zhm Premiere Hotel, Santika Premiere Hotel, Truntum Hotel, Mercure Hotel, and Mercure Hotel. The data were obtained through questionnaire and interview. As the result of questionnaire, this research found 34 spoken language topics needed by front office department staffs. 22 topics were needed by housekeeping department staffs. Then, 30 topics were needed by food and beverage department staffs based on target situation. Furthermore, as the result of interview, this research found 493 variations of spoken utterances used by people in hotel and tourism industry of spoken language topics needed based on target situation. It is suggested to the lecturers of English for Hotel and Tourism course to develop the teaching materials of spoken language topics needed and spoken utterances used by people in hotel industry that is line with the current needs so that students can work effectively in this industry.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) was used as a teaching strategy in the classroom in order to incorporate character education. This research was descriptive research which used questionnaire as the instrument. The questionnaire contained 20 items of close ended statements. There were 125 students involved in this study which were the students of English Literature study program enrolled in Paragraph Writing Course in Academic Year 2022/2023. Students work in groups to complete a project called a wall magazine. The goal of this study is to see the students’ perceptions toward the integration of character education in project-based learning in the Paragraph Writing class in terms of their writing performance. The finding of this research shows that the implementation of Integrating Character Education into PjBL in Paragraph Writing class received a very positive perception. The result of perceptions in this study indicated that the character education integration into PjBL in Paragraph Writing class succeed to ease students in developing their writing performance.

Abstract

In curriculum, students in junior high school were asked to write a variety of text. The recount text was one of those. Meanwhile, Based on previous research, there are still many students who make errors in using the simple past tense when compiling English texts, especially in writing recount texts and the types of errors are omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Purpose of this research were To know the ability of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 15 Padang in analyzing errors contained in recount text. The researcher conducts a descriptive study. the result of 70 samples, the total score was 693. The highest score that the students got was 100 (student 58) and lowest score was 25 (student 36). The text by student 58 was good based on the five aspects (the highest score). It was proved that in all aspects the students were in good to excellent ability level. Meanwhile, the student 36 got the lowest score because he does not know what is the error.

Abstract

This research examined students’ perception of online learning through five aspects of speaking ability. The design of the research was descriptive research. To collect data, the researcher employed a questionnaire. The questionnaire is made up of 25 close-ended questions related to online learning toward speaking ability. The researcher used cluster random sampling for selecting the sample. The sample was 30 students from five classes, namely K1, K2, K3, K4, and K5 of 2019 English Language Education at Universitas Negeri Padang. The result of this study revealed that many students positively perceived online learning in terms of speaking ability. The students claimed their perceptions that taking part in the process of learning speaking online can positively improve their vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension skills of speaking. Meanwhile, a few students disagree with online learning as a method of learning speaking. They are not sure that online learning gave a positive effect on the fluency and pronunciation aspects of speaking ability. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that online learning requires greater focus, particularly in terms of speaking skills.Keywords: Students’ Perception, Online Learning, Speaking Ability.
