Journal of English Language Teaching
Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

This research was aimed to know the functions of code-switching in the classroom practised by female and male lecturers and investigated gender differences between female and male lecturers in the use of code-switching in the classroom. The researcher observed the classroom using audio recorder. Then, the data was analysed using mixed method research to measure the frequency of code-switching used by female and male lecturers in the classroom. The research subjects in this study were English education lecturers at Universitas Negeri Padang. Two female lecturers and two male lecturers.

This research was purposed to find out the technique that the teachers use in providing reading material and also their reasons why they choose that technique. This research was descriptive research. A total of 7 English teachers at junior high schools in sub-district of Lembang Jaya were chosen as the participants. Questionnaire, interview guideline, and document analysis were used as the instruments to collect the data. The questionnaire consisted of 20 close-ended questions related to the techniques of providing reading material. The interview guideline consisted 5 leading questions about the techniques of providing reading material and the reason why choosing that technique. According to the result of this study, 74% of English teachers a junior high school in sub-district of Lembang Jaya use adapting reading material technique in providing reading material for the students. The English teachers use 5 techniques of adapting reading material: modifying content, adding/deleting content, addressing omission, extending task, and reorganizing content. According to the further interview with the English teachers, there are three reasons why teachers adapt reading material: to help the students understand the reading material, to match the ability of the students, and to make the students interested to learn the material by making it more contextual. Even though the result of this research which was conducted in sub-district of Lembang Jaya is mostly all English teachers at junior high school use adapting reading material technique in providing reading material, this research was not purposed to generalize that result will be the same if the same research is conducted in other schools, area, and places.

The implementation of Merdeka curriculum brings many change for the teachers. It can influence the teachers’ perceptions toward the implementation of this curriculum. The purpose of this research is to investigate the English teachers’ perception toward the implementation of Merdeka curriculum. Ten English teachers from three Junior High Schools in Koto Tangah, Padang were assigned to complete the questionnaire about their perception of Merdeka curriculum. Quantitative analyses were employed in this research using liker scale approach to measure the questionnaire and calculated the average score. The results showed that the majority of the English teachers had a positive or good perception toward the implementation of Merdeka curriculum with average score 3,1. The teachers agree that it is easy to design the teaching module and they feel convenient using the assessment from Merdeka curriculum. Also, the teachers agree that the implementation of differentiated learning Project based learning link with Pancasila profile and can give a good impact to the students.

This research aimed to find out the difficulties faced by English teachers in Implementing Merdeka curriculum on the seventh grade at SMPN 1 Panyabungan Selatan. The researcher also analyzed the strategies used by the teachers to overcome those difficulties. To obtain the results, researcher used interview as the instrument, while the method used on this research was descriptive qualitative. As the informants, researcher chosen three first grade English teachers at SMPN 1 Panyabungan Selatan. The results of this research indicated that there were five difficulties faced by English teachers in implementing Merdeka curriculum.Those five difficulties were understanding new terms found in Merdeka curriculum (learning outcomes (CP), learning objectives (TP), the flow of learning objectives (ATP)), giving assessment (the different focus of assessing made teacher difficult to do an assessment), choosing learning styles (because the learning centre was different from the previous curriculum), unsupported library (there were no books that teachers needed related Merdeka curriculum implementation in the library), unsupported IT network (teachers were not able to access Merdeka teaching platform because of unsupported network). To overcome those difficulties, teachers used four strategies. The four strategies meant were joining webinar, looking for E-books, utilizing application on gadget (youtube and tiktok), and left the school to find supported network (if the teachers wanted to access Merdeka teaching platform). The findings of this research expected to give benefits for English teachers, especially to overcome the difficulties faced in implementing Merdeka curriculum.

This research aimed to analyze spoken language topics needed and spoken utterances used by people in hotel industry for English for Hotel and Tourism course at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. They were analyzed by using target situation analysis. This research used a descriptive qualitative research. The sample of this research was selected using purposive sampling, involving 44 front office department staffs, 42 housekeeping department staffs, and 49 food and beverage department staffs from 4 and 5 star hotels in Padang as the sample. The hotel staffs are from The Zhm Premiere Hotel, Santika Premiere Hotel, Truntum Hotel, Mercure Hotel, and Mercure Hotel. The data were obtained through questionnaire and interview. As the result of questionnaire, this research found 34 spoken language topics needed by front office department staffs, 22 spoken language topics needed by housekeeping department staffs, and 30 spoken language topics needed by food and beverage department staffs. Furthermore, as the result of interview, this research found 493 variations of spoken utterances used by hotel staffs and guests in hotel according to spoken language topics needed. The results of this research suggested the lecturers of English for Hotel and Tourism course to add more spoken language topics needed. It is to meet the learners’ needs with the requirements at workplace in order to students can work effectively in the target situation.

This study aimed to analyze the students’ perception toward reading comprehension skills before and after joining English club. The study was a descriptive qualitative research. The participants in this study were 10 students who had joined the English club for one year. The data were collected through an interview, which included 12 questions. The findings showed that students had a positive perception toward reading comprehension skills after joining the English club. There were changes in the students' reading comprehension skills between before and after joining the English club. It can be concluded that the students agreed that their reading comprehension skills improved after joining the English club.

Speaking is one of the most essential abilities in learning English. Story completion is the right method in learning English speaking that the students being able to speak in class within a group. This Research is conducted to find the effect of the use of the story completion technique on students’ speaking English Ability in grade 9 at SMP Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. The students of SMP Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP in grade 9 contributed to the study’s population. The population consisted of 80 students and class IX C was selected to be the sample in this study through the cluster random sampling method. Ten sessions of the treatment were given to the students including the pretest and posttest that were held to conduct this research. Researchers used an English-speaking test by retelling a narrative story to collect the data. Story completion helps the students increasing their interest to speak English. The result of the data analysis denote that the null hypothesis found in this study is rejected which means that the effect of using story completion technique in students’ speaking English ability does give a significant effect to increase the speaking English ability of the students,and is accepted as the study’s result.

Interlanguage Pragmatics examines how people with different first languages and cultural backgrounds use a common language system during social interactions. This research aimed to examine apology strategies employed by native speakers of Indonesia and Indonesian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). A total of 40 people took part in the study, 20 native speakers of Indonesia and 20 learners of Indonesian as a foreign language (EFL). The study utilized a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) consisting of 6 different situations. The data were analyzed using the Banikalef (2015) methodology, which was obtained from the Olshtain and Cohen (1983) framework. The data demonstrate that they employ different strategies when offering apologies. Some of these strategies are IFID, explanation of account, acknowledgement of responsibility, offer of repairs, denial of responsibility, and concern for the hearer. It analyses the correlation between the utilization of politeness in social factors, such as power and social distance. Furthermore, gender differences cannot be overlooked.

This research analyzed the implementation of Kurikulum in the learning process of English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. This research is focused on the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka in the differentiated learning process in English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. The design of this research is descriptive research. Indicators of this research were devided into three categories based on Tomlinson (2001), three important aspect of student learning needs in differentiated learning are readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile. The data were collected by using interview. The participants of this reserach were English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan. The result of this research showed that the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in the first year at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan was quite good. Teachers use a variety of media, guidance that suits students' learning styles and different assignments according to students' abilities. This method is applied to meet student needs in three categories, namely readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile. From the results of this research, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in the differentiated learning process in English subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Palembayan is quite good in meeting students' needs for readiness to learn, interest in learning and student learning profile.Keywords: Kurikulum Merdeka, differentiated learning.

Grammar is one of the basics of a language and must be mastered by English students to master English language skills. One of the causes that influence students' grammar mastery is the teacher's teaching style. This research intends to determine the significant relationship between the teaching style of English teachers and students' grammar mastery at SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang. This research used quantitative research with a correlational design. This research involved 80 students of grade 11 and grade 12 of SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang. The instrument of this research was a grammar test and a questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire result, the English teachers used a formal authority style with mean scores of 17.18 and 17.38. Based on the data analysis for the grammar test, it was found that the mean score of students from 11th grade was 34.1, while the mean score of students from 12th grade was 48.1. The researcher found a very high correlation between English teachers' teaching styles and students' grammar mastery. It is proven by rxy (0.995) greater than rtable (0.220). In conclusion, there is a correlation exists between English teachers' teaching styles and students' grammar mastery.
