Abstract

Reading as one of English skills should be taught to the students. However, students still find some difficulties in reading due to some factors: lack of background knowledge, motivation, and vocabulary. Therefore, teacher should select an appropriate method to solve those problems. This paper is aimed to inform how to use a teaching method which is called Directed Activities Related to the Text (DART) method in teaching reading narrative text to senior high school students. DART method relies on group discussion to achieve learning objectives. There are some purposes in this method: to help the students to comprehend the information in the text, to enrich students’ vocabulary, and to improve students’ interest in reading since the students involved actively in learning activities. Teaching reading comprehension thorough this method of a narrative text consists of two stages: the first stage, reconstruction activity, requires students to reconstruct the text through predicting, completing, and sequencing the text. While the second stage, analysis activity, requires students explore the text by analyze the elements of the text thorough questioning, highlighting, segmenting and labeling, and diagram constructing. Therefore, thorough these activities the students can understand and comprehend the text easily.

Abstract

This paper discusses how to use Cubing Strategy in teaching Explanation text at Senior High School. Based on the writers’ experience in teaching English, many students find difficulties in writing explanation text. Considering this problem, the teacher needs to apply a strategy in teaching and learning process to help the students understand the text. Cubing Strategy is a creative, hands-on activity which develops critical thinking and promotes deeper understanding and in-depth exploration of a topic. It uses a cube-shaped graphic organizer to prompt students to look at a topic from many different angles and levels. On each side of a cube, the student writes answers to prompts or questions. By applying the Cubing Strategy in writing an explanation text, the students may create a better explanation text.

Abstract

Reading is an important skill that is needed in order to get information from written text. In reading, the students not only must be able to read the text, but they also must be able to comprehend the text in order to get the meaning from the text. However, many students have difficulties in comprehending the text and lacking motivation in reading. It is because there is a tendency that the teachers do not use an interesting strategy that can attract students’ interest. That is why this paper is conducted in order to explain how to use Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading (USSR) strategy in teaching reading comprehension to senior high school students. USSR strategy is conducted by providing the students to select their own reading material based on their interest and read it silently about twenty minutes without any interruption. This strategy can make the students relaxed and enjoyed the reading process. It is believed that this strategy can help many students in improving their reading comprehension ability. Key words: Reading, Reading Comprehension, USSR strategy

Abstract

Writing narrative text might be an unattractive activity for high school students. It is considered be a hard work, students find difficulty in arranging the sentences because lack of literacy and ideas. Here, author suggests the use of Webtoon digital comic to help teacher in teaching writing narrative text in order help students to organize and develop ideas. In process of writing narrative text, author uses five phases: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing, where the activity in one of the phases is read Webtoon digital comic as an activity to enhance students in generating ideas. This activity does not include any papers at all since the activity is done by using Smartphone and laptop connected with internet. By integrating the use of ICT in this learning activity, it is hoped teacher and students might increase the awareness of ICT implementation to facilitate the learning activity.
