Abstract

Professionalism in English phrases is an indispensable tool for the enhancement of fluency and accuracy in communication. However, English second language learners face redundancy challenges apropos an effective use of phrases. The research investigated strategic intervention for selected deviant English phrases at the University of Venda. A quantitative approach was adopted because data could be analysed mathematically and statistically. Using probability sampling, 35 Level Three English students registered in the 2022 academic year at this university were selected to participate in this research. Further, a convenience technique was employed to select the respondents who were readily approachable and had been studying English for more than twelve years. A pre-test study was conducted on the respondents who were not part of the target group to plan and modify the main research. After a treatment process was followed, the research revealed that respondents were incompetent in the use of English phrases. Nonetheless, post-test results established that respondents performed preternaturally after the utilisation of the ‘language shadowing methods’. Frequent practice in the use of this technique, therefore, cannot be ignored if one wishes to improve not only the art of public oration but also the image of the person's academic literacy.

Abstract

Abstract: During the last decade, the slogan of reflective teaching has been embraced by teachers, teachers’ educators, and educational teachers all over the world. This international movement in teaching and teacher education that has developed under the banner of reflection can be seen as a reaction against the view of teachers as technicians who narrowly construe the nature of the problems confronting them and merely carry out what others, removed from classroom, want them to do. Drawing on John Dewey’s ideas, there are three attitudes of reflective teachers, i.e., open-mindedness, wholeheartedness, and responsibility. Personality traits are tendencies that represent an individual's uniqueness that have a lasting and stable effect on an individual's behavior and thinking (Satchell et al., 2017). However, given the fact that all teachers are not of the same personality types, it is hypothesized that teachers with one personality type prefer to rely on one element of teaching reflection. This provided enough impetus for us to investigate the relationship between the teachers’ personality types and their teaching reflection elements. To this end, we drew on John and Srivastava’s (1999) the Big Five Inventory Personality Test and Ryan (2014) the Reflective Teaching Instrument. One hundred Iranian EFL teachers were selected based on convenience sampling. They were from six different language institutes in Tehran, Iran. The results confirmed the hypothesis that each personality type correlated with elements of the teaching reflection. Extrovert teachers, for instance, were found to draw on the affective element in their teaching practices. The pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract

This study is intended to reveal the virtual field experience of preservice English language teachers and investigate the impacts of Covid-19 enforced virtual field experience on the classroom management concerns and priorities of the participants. Within this scope, the present qualitative study included eight senior-year preservice English language teachers enrolled at a public university in Turkey and portrayed their three-month online practicum experiences by collecting data from reflective diaries, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observation records. The findings obtained by analyzing the data within the framework of grounded theory with the aid of qualitative data analysis software revealed that the virtual field experience process caused a serious impact on the classroom management concerns of the participants that were observed to be communication-oriented, lesson planning and instruction oriented, discipline-oriented and learner and teacher-oriented aspects. The findings further revealed that virtual field experience increased the participants' concerns about professional development which implied that it could be used as an alternative if it is revised and redesigned

Abstract

Reviewing translation teaching from the nature of the basic skills that must be possessed, students have at least mastered two languages based on their respective linguistic rules. This study aims to analyze the translation teaching model in offline, online, and hybrid mode. This research uses a case study method with a qualitative approach. The subject of this research is learning English Indonesian Translation classes from 2019 to 2022 at UBSI. Research data analysis techniques use interactive data techniques and are validated by conducting data source triangulation techniques. This study reveals that translation teaching requires student readiness by requiring students to master a number of courses or at least have attended and passed the required lectures. Offline, online, and hybrid translation teaching at UBSI is carried out consistently and continuously. UBSI uses a collaborative translation teaching model by combining two translation teaching models through technology. The limitations of this research are limited to the level of researcher participation in several quality assurance processes. However, this research succeeded in uncovering the potential of technology as part of a collaborative translation teaching model.

Abstract

To English educators and researchers, having a good grasp of what a language is and how language learning takes place is important. To a certain extent, surveying language study development is a good start to achieving the goal. This article is the second part of a literature review summarizing language studies taking place along the history of philosophy that has lasted for 26 centuries, starting from ancient Greek to the postmodern era. This part includes language studies conducted in Renaissance Period up to the Postmodern Age. Data was collected by surveying relevant and credible textbooks and scientific articles. The findings reveal that unlike language studies in Ancient Greek up to the Middle Ages that focused on various paradigms related to the nature of language and micro-linguistic concepts, the studies in the era of modern philosophy focus on the relationship between language and users and the world. Overall, the changes in the focus of language studies over the 26 centuries indicate that the study of language will keep on going on and on because language is a symbiotic organism that continues to change along with the changes in thinking, experience, life, and human culture as the host of the symbiosis between language and humans.
