Abstract

This study analyzes the application of the Wakalah bi al-Ujrah contract in Letter of Credit (LC) services within Sharia banks. As an agency-based contract, Wakalah bi al-Ujrah enables banks to act on behalf of clients in facilitating trade transactions while charging a transparent service fee. This paper adopts a qualitative literature-based approach, reviewing books, journal articles, and institutional guidelines. Findings indicate that the contract ensures Sharia compliance, strengthens customer trust, and provides operational efficiency in trade finance. Nevertheless, challenges persist, including limited customer literacy, regulatory inconsistencies, and misinterpretation of fee structures. To optimize implementation, strategies such as enhancing Sharia governance, improving transparency, and expanding educational initiatives are recommended. The study contributes theoretically by integrating agency and risk management perspectives in Islamic finance and practically by providing insights for regulators and practitioners to enhance competitiveness in global trade facilitation

Abstract

This paper analyzes the role of Bayt al-Māl wa al-Tamwīl (BMT) as an Islamic microfinance institution in developing community economies. By integrating social and commercial functions, BMTs manage zakat and charitable funds while also providing financing through profit-sharing and qard al-ḥasan contracts. The research employs a qualitative literature review using books, journal articles, dissertations, and institutional publications. Findings reveal that BMTs enhance financial inclusion, empower micro and small enterprises, and strengthen community resilience. Challenges include limited governance capacity, technological constraints, and regulatory inconsistencies. Nevertheless, opportunities lie in digital transformation, government support, and alignment with Sustainable Development Goals. Theoretically, the study contributes to Islamic finance discourse by linking social and commercial finance in a hybrid institutional model. Practically, it offers strategies for policymakers and practitioners to strengthen BMT operations, expand outreach, and optimize their role in community economic development

Abstract

This article examines the concept of kasb (earning or acquisition) in the ethical and metaphysical framework of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī, one of the most influential scholars in Islamic intellectual history. Amid growing global calls for ethically grounded economic systems, Al-Ghazālī’s treatment of kasb in works such as Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, al-Iqtiṣād fī alIʿtiqād, and al-Munqidh min al-Ḍalāl offers a profound synthesis of spiritual intention, legal adherence, and socio-economic responsibility. This study uses a conceptual and qualitative methodology based on textual analysis of classical sources, supported by recent scholarly discourse on Islamic economics. The findings demonstrate that kasb is not merely a mechanism of material sustenance but a form of spiritual discipline, ethical striving, and communal contribution. Al-Ghazālī’s framework reconciles divine will and human agency, positioning lawful labor as an act of worship when performed with proper intention. Furthermore, this ethical paradigm provides a comprehensive model for reforming contemporary Islamic economic structures, emphasizing integrity, justice, and spiritual purpose. The research contributes to the revival of Islamic economic philosophy by integrating metaphysical insight with actionable ethics, offering an alternative to purely formalistic or profit-driven systems in the modern world.

Abstract

This study offers a comparative analysis of the ethical, institutional, and distributive foundations of capitalist and Sharia economic systems. While capitalism emphasizes market efficiency, individual freedom, and profit maximization, Sharia economics prioritizes divine accountability, social equity, and moral purpose. Drawing on conceptual literature and policy analysis, the research highlights the divergent ethical logics, governance mechanisms, and wealth distribution strategies of each system. Capitalist institutions reward market productivity but often generate inequality and value-neutral governance. In contrast, Sharia-based institutions operationalize justice through instruments such as zakat, waqf, and profit-sharing contracts, embedding ethics into economic life. The study contributes a refined framework for evaluating economic systems based on values and justice, offering both theoretical insights and practical implications for policy and development. This research underscores the urgency of rethinking global economic models in an era of deepening inequality and ethical fragmentation.
