Abstract

 Figurative language is a way of conveying a message using the beauty of language. The use of figurative language is usually found in casual conversation, novels, poems, song lyrics, speech, and poems. This study aims to investigate the types of figurative language in selected children’s poetry compiled by Sylvia M. Vardell (2020). This research focused on the types of figurative language and the meaning of those figurative lines. The method of this research is the descriptive qualitative method.  The object of this research is the figurative lines from selected 5 poems with family and friends theme. The researcher also made a conclusion about the most frequent types at the end. To achieve the goal of this research, the researcher employed the theory from Laurence E. Rozakis (1995) about the types of figurative language. Thus, from 43 data, the findings show that there are 12 occurrences of hyperbole, 18 occurrences of metaphor, 1 occurrence of simile, 2 occurrences of ambiguity, 5 occurrences of personification, 3 occurrences of synecdoche, and 2 occurrences of allegory. The researcher finds a conclusion about the most dominant type in this research, which is metaphor.

Abstract

This study examines semiotics analysis on five Beatles songs, namely Hey Jude, Here Comes The Sun, Come Together, Yesterday, and Let It Be by using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory of signs. This study aims are to investigate the denotative and connotative meanings contained in the song lyrics and to examine myth in Barthes' theory by examining how the lyrics to The Beatles' song relate to the denotation and connotation meanings. This study is descriptive qualitative research method. The written text or transcript of the song lyrics served as the study data. There are 26 semiotic signs found in five songs of The Beatles which contents have denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and mythical meaning. There were 2 semiotic terms that were most manifested in the lyrics of the Beatles' Five songs namely: sincerity, and modesty or simplicity in life. These five songs of The Beatles can be used to represent characters, feelings, opinions, and experiences. The Myth's meaning emerges in the lyrics that hit much in reflecting human life, which touch on many aspects of human life.

Abstract

Language evolves over time and varies depending on location and social context. The lexical variation in speaking is influenced by several factors, including age, education level, and linguistic competence. This research is about lexical variation. The goal of this study is to distinguish the lexical differences between Muaro Takung and Maloro sub-dialects and to count the percentage of lexical differences between those two sub-dialect . So it can be concluded that Muaro Takung and Maloro are dialects, sub-dialects, or just speak differences. The data of this reseach was 258 words taken from 205 swadesh list and 53 from basic vocabularies used in everyday conversations. The data was collected from ten informants with specific categories. Furthermore, this research used dialectometric formula to count the percentage of the lexical differences between Muaro Takung and Maloro sub-dialect. From the data, the researcher found the lexical differences between Muaro Takung sub-dialect and Maloro sub-dialect and categorized it into seven types, noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, determiner, subordinate conjunction and preposition. The calculation of the percentage of lexical differences shows Muaro Takung is 25,9% and Maloro is 35,3%.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of 3 short stories by Shirley Ren The Pink Umbrella (2019), Jason Sanford The Eight-Thousanders (2020) and Alyssa Wong A Fist of Permutations in Lightning and Wildflowers (2016). This research discusses about defense mechanisms applied to oppose reality. Defense mechanisms are commonly used in everyday life, a person applies defense mechanisms when the ego can no longer balance the id and superego and worries arise in the person. However, if this is done to oppose reality, it will cause new prolonged conflict. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method which is using psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud which deals with opposing reality and defense mechanisms. This research aims to find out what types of defense mechanism applied by character and how the symptoms appear. The analysis of this study revealed that the character applies 2 defense mechanisms, namely denial and displacement, to oppose reality and the symptoms that arise. The conclusion of this study is defense mechanisms applied to oppose reality is not good, not to change things that are not desirable but to cause new prolonged conflicts. Opposing reality means not being able to come to terms with reality and not being able to come to terms with one self so that as a result the characters go through life in misery.

Abstract

This study aims to determine (1) the topic of discourse and (2) the discourse strategy of the utterances produced by whites in the When They See Us movie series as discriminatory actors to reveal how they voice their ideology when discriminating against blacks in their discourse. The researcher used qualitative methods because the data is in the form of written texts and also understands the meaning attached by a group to a social problem. In particular, the researcher analyzed the discourse presented in the When They See Us movie series which is transcribed into written discourses. This study focuses on how whites describe themselves positively and how whites portray blacks negatively in their discourse based on their beliefs. From the movie series that have been analyzed, the research found 83 data consisting of the presentation of positive-self and negative-other. By using the Van Dijk’s ideological square approach, the researcher found 10 discourse topics of blacks and 5 discourse topics of whites. In addition, there were 12 discriminatory discourse strategies used by whites to represent blacks negatively and 4 discourse strategies that whites used to represent themselves positively.

Abstract

 This study describes about how figurative language used in several political discussions which are presented in Prime Time News Metro TV YouTube Channel. This study was not only described types of figurative language but also described each meaning/message. The source of data based on four selected videos which had similar theme called The Upcoming 2024’s Election in Indonesia, those were appeared between January to April 2022. In data analysis, it found that there were 204 utterances containing of figurative language. Therefore, based on Keraf(2009) classifications there were 7 types of figurative language found in this study which are simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, irony, sarcasm and innuendo. In this results, metaphor became the most frequent type of figurative language. Moreover, this study also found 5 types of meaning among 7 types of meaning in Pardede(2016) namely; conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning and reflected meaning. In shorts, there were three results of this study: firstly, connotative meaning became the most frequent type of meaning, secondly, it was compatible to the general assumption about figurative language was rich of imply meaning; lastly, metaphor had special role to emphasize the speaker’s intention while using other figurative language like sarcasm and innuendo.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify discourse topics and discourse strategies that contained sexual harassment contained in the movie “Photocopier” and analyze them using Van Dijk’s theory of critical discourse analysis. This type of research is qualitative research. The data sources are dialogues from the “Photocopier” movie. In this study, Van Dijk’s theory of critical discourse analysis of Positive Self and Negative Other Representation was applied. According to the findings, there are nineteen dialogues including five discourse topics and seven discourse strategies contain sexual harassment. In the movie, the most dominant discourse topics is the women as a sexual objects and in the discourse strategy is the strategy of problematization.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of the Novel Less (2017) by Andrew Sean Greer. The purpose of this analysis is to find out to which setting and conflict (plot) reveal the efforts of the main character in the Novel Less in dealing with problems that come to him by trying to fight and rise from failure. This analysis is related to the concept of life instinct proposed by Sigmund Freud and self-determination by Ryan and Deci. The result of this analysis shows that the main character has self-motivation and goals in his life as shown through his action in seeking his identity.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the use of language style in Indonesian stand-up comedy show. The researcher used Martin Joss’s theory in 1967 about five styles of language in form of formality; frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style and intimate style. This study analysis what are the types and the most frequent style that are used in the Indonesian stand-up comedy shows. The form of research used is qualitative descriptive approach. The data in this research obtained from the five videos of Ridwan Remin stand-up comedy in YouTube. The result showed that there were three styles used in those videos. They were frozen style, formal style and intimate style. After the researcher counted the data, the most frequent style was the casual style with 93.96% of whole utterances. It is concluded that the use of casual style was the characteristics of Ridwan Remin in delivering humor material.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of the novel by Paula Hawkins entitled The Girl on The Train (2015). This research reveals the kinds of betrayals committed by Rachel's ex-husband and how she was able to manage her life after experiencing trauma, anxiety and depression for a long time. This research is a qualitative descriptive study that uses psychoanalysis theory and is supported by defense mechanism theory. The results of this research indicate several stages that Rachel went through to be able to rise from the adversity she experienced. The stages of recovering the betrayal that are told in this novel are; denial, anger, depression, bargaining and acceptance. These stages have a different time span for each victim, depending on the betrayal experienced and the mental state of each victim. The results of this study also reveal that betrayal can occur not because of the shortcomings and helplessness of the betrayed person, but betrayal can occur purely because the traitors do not have the value of loyalty in themselves. Therefore, no matter how perfect their partner is, traitors will never be satisfied.
