Abstract

This Paper is intended to show how one a single reality, that is International Politics and National Resilience, is presented and viewed by the two major of presidential candidates in 2014. In this paper, van Dijk’s (2004) framework adopted form Politics, ideology and discourse is used identify the discursive structures within the transcription of political campaign debate and to find out the ideology underlying them. The macro strategies of ‘positive self-representation’ and ‘negative other-representation’ (which are intimately tied up with ‘Polarization’ of in group vs. out group ideologies or US-THEM) and more strategies become very accurate criteria for the evaluation of attitudes, and opinions. The findings of this study can conducive to expanding readers’ critical thinking abilities in comprehension and production of language.

Abstract

In today’s advanced technology, the needs of word formation increase because more and more terms to support such technology advancement were invented. This also happens to aviation terms that also introduces several new terms that might be still strange to the public. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study on word formation of aviation terms in order to facilitate the public understanding of aviation terms. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of word formation of aviation terms in English for Aviation Book published by Oxford. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were the words contained in the listening transcript of the book. The data were analyzed based on the theories of word formation proposed by Bryson (1990), O’Grady et al. (1997), Pena (2010), Plag (2002) and Yule (2010). Based on the data analysis, it was found that there are 12 out of 17 types of word formation proposed by aforementioned experts. They are (1) Derivation, (2) Inflection, (3) Coinage, (4) Conversion, (5) Acronym, (6) Initialism, (7) Compounding, (8) Back-formation, (9) Internal Change, (10) Suppletion, (11) Onomatopoeia, and (12) Multiple Processes. Among the 12 types of word formation found, the type of word formation most frequently used in aviation terms is inflection with the frequency of 112 data (31,20%). This finding shows that words used in aviation terms are sensitive to the grammatical needs of the words in the structure.

Abstract

This study analyses the Anthony Doeers' All The Light We Cannot See (2014). This research raises the issue of sovereignty given by liberal ideology. The purpose of this research describes sovereignty that can be seen from two aspects: personal liberty and social liberty. Literature elements, such as character, conflict and setting are used in this analysis. This research analysis uses text and context based interpretation. These elements contribute to describe the extent to which character shows individual freedom and social freedom given by liberalism ideology. This study is associated with the concept of Liberalism by Leonard trewlawny Hobhouse. The results of the analysis show that even though the character has shortcomings but through the liberal understanding given, the character is able to work like normal people and inspire others.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of the existence of an immigrant through the analysis of the literary devices such as plot, setting. This analysis is related to the concept power and knowledge by Michel Foucault and consciousnessby Sigmund Freud, supported by the text and context based interpretation. The result of the analysis shows that the immigrant’s struggles to prove his existence which reflected through his efforts in showing loyalty towards the country and his mindset about the issue in the country.

Abstract

This research focused on types of abbreviations found in”Toram Online”. The aims of this research were (1) to find types of abbreviations, and (2) to identify how the comparisons between each type of abbreviations are. This research is a descriptive research. The results of the analysis of data are presented in the form of description and explanation. Data in this research were 126 special terms used in the interaction between players in game. These data were gained and analyzed by means of observation and interpretation by the researcher. The results of the research show that there were five types of abbreviations. They were 26 clipping(20%), 25 omission(20%), 64 initialism(50%), 5 logogram(5%), 6 nonstandardspelling(5%). The players tend to use abbreviations because there was limitation of characters that can be used in one time chat.

Abstract

Compliment is a form of positive speech that is intended as a form to respect or appreciate something. In giving compliment a person has a certain options. This paper investigated the compliment strategies employed by male and female in social media interaction. This research is categorized as documentaries studysince the object of this research was in form of documentation of compliment use in column comment of Facebook.This research uses qualitative and quantitative methods. Finding showed that in different gender, male give more explicit compliment (94.4%) than female (93.3%). For the second strategy of compliment (implicit compliment), female tend to use implicit compliment (6.7%) than male (3.7%). In the last strategy of compliment (non-compliment), male prefer to use that strategy 1 time (1.8%) but female choose not to use non-compliment. In the same gender, female give more explicit compliment (1.8%) than male (0%). However, female also use implicit compliment 1 time but male get zero. For non-compliment strategy, male and female choose not to use that strategy in giving compliment.

Abstract

In linguistics, everyone has his own way of expressing his feelings. One such way is by using taboo language. Taboo language not only happens in everyday life, but also in a movie. This study aims to find the types of taboo language as well as the functions contained in every utterance used by the characters in the western film entitled "The Wolf of Wall Street". The data of this research are in the form of sentence or utterance containing taboo language which is spoken by every character in the film. The data were collected from the film "The Wolf of Wall Street" taken from the www.layarkaca21.com. Then, choose the utterances containing the taboo language and grouped them into types and functions of taboo words. Type of the research is qualitative and quantitative research. Based on data analysis, it was found that there are 3 types of taboo languages with the highest percentage in the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street" namely; Obscenity(64,8%),Epithets(13,1%), and Vulgarity (8,2%). For the function of the use of taboo language wasfound 3 functions with the highest percentage as well. They areto creation of strong interpersonal (35,6%), provide catharsis (24,5%), and to draw attention to oneself (17,8%).

Abstract

Bahasa adalah sarana utama untuk memenuhi kebutuhan berkomunikasi. Dengan adanya bahasa manusia mampu berinteraksi dalam dengan bahasa yang beragam. Penelitian in dilatarbelakangi karena adanya permasalahan yang menarik dalam hal pemendekan kata yang terdapat pada situs berita sepak bola online “www.goal.com” yang dipublikasikan pada tahun 2016-2017. Dalam tulisan berita tersebut banyak ditemukan tipe-tipe dari kata singkatan. Penulis mengumpulkan data dengan cara mendowload berita, membaca berita dan menegelompokan semua tipe abreviasi dalam bentuk tabel. Dalam menganalisa data, penulis mengelompokkan data ke tipe tertentu berdasarkan teori Schendl (2001) tentang tipe-tipe abreviasi. Schendl membagi menjadi 4 jenis yaitu: Clipping Word, Blends, Acronym, and Initialsm. Kemudian penulis membahasnya berdasarkan kajian teori. Dari hasil penelitian ini ditemukan sebanyak 36 data yang termasuk kedalam kategori abreviasi.
